new Nano fail -

Nano fail, super disappointed with the new nano, pedometer sucks, and you still need Nike+ dongle, looks like im sticking with my current one.

Shuffle - Nothing really surprising but there is only so much Apple can do with the shuffle. Nice to see the physical controls are back and 4GB would have been better than 2GB at that price.

Nano - No more camera, can't play video, screen got smaller, no increase in storage, same price. Looks like a step back. Sure it's small but who cares? The shuffle is already small and can fill the market for people who want a small basic player that they can clip. When Steve first showed the Nano without the click wheel I thought they were going to reveal the Nano with the same size screen as the 5th gen but no wheel.

iPod Touch - Good upgrade and got most of the features people were asking for. Typical upgrade were the Touch gets closer to the iPhone a couple months after the iPhone is upgrade in June. Chrome back needs to be changed, flash and better camera for still pics would have been nice. I guess uping the storage would have also been a nice option.

im sorry but the shuffle look's like it has taken a step backwards, and now that its almost the same size as the nano, having two separate products like that, does not make much sense.

Wow!

The new Shuffle is a bad idea. A solid admission that Apple blew it with the old 'stick' shuffle. Bad, sad...

The new Nano is an interesting idea, but likely a fail as well. No camera and no video capability? Why strip that from the Nano? It can't be because people think it's a 'Touch Jr'. The capabilities aren't even nearly the same. Bad idea...

The new Touch is a great idea. 'Face Time' and the Retina display are evolutionary steps that will add more functionality to the Touch (obviously) yet make it more likely to appeal to iPhone haters. But it doesn't show that much usability for iPhone 4 owners, unless they fly long distances and don't want to kill their batteries on the flight.

The new AppleTV is an interesting direction. Having purchased two of the 'old' units, I can say that it has been a wonderful product. Aside from a few hiccups, the units are performing very well. The new AppleTV is like a cash machine, in reverse. 'Rent' movies, 'rent' TV shows... $5 bucks here, 99 cents there and pretty soon you could really burn a hole in your budget. I wonder how families with children will deal with the ability to burn through big bucks are going to deal with it. Also the price seems rather high possibly...

All in all, a mixed bag... I'm trying to find one of the old 'stick' Shuffles locally just because I really liked them. I was tempted to plunk down the bucks for a now 'old' Nano, and never did. I do have an 'old' 64g Touch that I don't use much. I'll wait to get my iPhone 4 in March (or the iPhone 5 in July) and probably use it more.

It's the wait for the iOS 4 for the iPad that has me wondering what the heck is up...

im sorry but the shuffle look's like it has taken a step backwards, and now that its almost the same size as the nano, having two separate products like that, does not make much sense.

The Nano got a lot smaller, the Shuffle did not a lot bigger. Shuffle is an upgrade considering Steve admitted consumers were not happy with no buttons. The Nano should have been the size of the 4th gen's screen with no click wheel. How much smaller do you want the shuffle?

I agree, the nano is just strange...

What's the niche for the nano now? It's not useful for the gym or for walking around anymore because you can't control it by touch like the shuffle (thank god they restored the awesome older shuffle design). For more sit-down use, max 16 GB storage is just not enough for a lot of people especially at that price. It's too close in price to the Touch, and Jobs actually made it seem pretty hard to operate with a screen that small.

Meanwhile, I'm thrilled they reverted to the older shuffle design, and support for multiple playlists is great, but at a max storage of 2 GB there's just not enough room for the 2-3 playlists I want on it! For my exercise playlist plus one or two "traveling" playlists, I'd need at least 4 GB (even if I recompress to 128kpbs when syncing, which takes forever).

So basically, what Apple needed to do to get my business today was make a bigger capacity shuffle, or else a much cheaper nano that still has buttons. They also would have gotten me with a 128 GB touch (or *maybe* a touch with a better still camera). Oh well! I'll have to tide myself over with my refurbished MBP that's supposed to arrive today. :)

The 10.5.8 requirement for OS X on all these new devices is quite disappointing. Why are they supporting XP (released in 2001), but not OS X Tiger (Released in 2005)?

My guess would be the number of people that have each of those OSes installed. And the fact that Apple keeps trying to get you all to ditch Tiger already and move to Leopard or Snow Leopard.

Not a bad update except for the Nano. If I was in the market for one, I would be looking for an older model.

I agree. There's nothing about the new Nano that would make me choose it over the previous generations. This new one makes me want to take out my 1st generation Nano to remember when this particular product was stunning.

The touch screen really done nothing to benefit the Nano at all. The iPhone and iTouch has apps that use the touch screens, the Nano has touch screen without a purpose. Pure gimmick.

I personally think that this event was a massive, massive fail. The iPod Touch update was great though. Did anyone else notice how often Steve messed up with his words?

Well, i'm glad i'm in the iPhone/iPad (iphone only actually) owner group because if I wasn't I certainly would have gotten the shaft like all you iPod users did today, again. Smaller nano with screen but no video and no more camera, no update to classic and an iPod touch with only 64gb, no FM radio, no flash no 3G. Oh, and a revert for the shuffle. Thanks apple, I would like to give you more money for no reason! I think it's pretty clear apple wants all of you iPod users to jump on the iPhone or iPad bandwagon, then the chances you'll be paying them a monthly fee will be very high.

Still boggles my mind that so many people will buy new Apple products for no reason other than it's a new Apple product.

Did anybody notice that the iPod Touch now has 802.11 n WiFi? This is great news. I hope this will speed up things a lot!

For what? 802.11n's speed is really only useful for transferring files across a network. For surfing the web/downloading/streaming, you're still at the mercy of your ISP's speed.

It was the touch I was looking out for and I'd really hoped they'd stick GPS in there, disappointed with that omission and the low res back camera. I'd have prefered it to stay the same thickness with more features.

Other than that a really great upgrade, just debating whether to go for the Touch or go the whole hog and get an iphone 4. 95% of use will be just for watching video while commuting and checking email at home/work over wifi, but would have loved satnav for the 5% of times it would come in handy!

I just bought the new Nano for one main reason - working out. Built in clip, lightweight, and I don't need to wear that damn armband! So for me, there's a market for the Nano. I like having a display - the shuffle doesn't make sense IMHO.

I agree, it's looking great for that and taking walks (with that step counter too)! I also don't see the point of watching clips on that size. Could you even make out what you'd see well? I think the next step up at 8 GB is intended for that use.

Does anyone know if there is an exact date as to when it comes out to an Apple Store?

We don't know for sure, but since their current buy a Mac get an iPod Touch free ends 9/7, I am guessing late next week. No way they would package a new iPod Touch for this program.

Okay, sorry in advance but what's with all the complaining about the Nano?

Apple have said, both today and in previous earnings reports, that the nano was becoming less popular. If they'd launched a version today that kept the same features (video, buttons etc) but tweaked the form factor somehow it would have been the most pointless product they could produce. If you're looking for those features the base iPod Touch simply destroys the nano for only $80 more, it would have been verging on embarrassing.

Instead Apple have redesigned the nano into a more niche product but one that will find different uses and applications than either the shuttle or the touch. By so doing they manage to keep their product line distinct and avoid canabalising sales AND manage to produce something that, IMO of course, is a very very cool looking gadget.

Quite frankly Apple should be praised for making the 8Gb iPod Touch such a good deal. $229 for a touchscreen device with e-mail, web, games, class-leading processor, superb battery life, video cameras front and back... this really is a stupidly good deal (and if you need more storage the 32Gb ain't half bad either). I really can't think of anything to match it at the price and by launching it Apple have pretty much forced the rest of the media player market (including themselves with the Shuffle, Nano and Classic) to either match it or be resigned to niche status.

Me, I'm seriously seriously tempted by the new Nano as my new in-car system. 24 hours of battery life in a device that's all screen but light enough to keep in place with just a small tab of velcro with a single audio cable the only clutter? Tenpting, very very tempting. Looking forward to the reviews on that one.

No GPS = :mad::mad::mad::mad:
No 3G Data = :mad::mad::mad:

You want an iPhone and either can't afford it or are too cheap. Deal.

I think today was a half and half event. Really really excited for the new Apple TV and iPod Touch, but never in my life would I ever but that Nano, and I never use the original Shuffle I have. Not to mention, not even a peep out of the Classic? Nothing? Really?

No clickwheel or video on the Nano kill it for me big time. My 3rd gen Nano is just perfect for what I want. My Classic will apparently remain the best iPod of all time. Classic white plastic and functionality at its peak in popularity. Sorely missed the Classic today, Steve. While the Shuffle isn't bad, it isn't great either. Nothing special and nothing new. It's the 2nd gen Shuffle returned from beyond the grave.

That was the most blatant admit of a bad concept since they axed my squat Nano. The buttonless 3rd gen Shuffle was just a glorified tie clip, and Apple apparently knew it dropped the ball on that one. I'm excited to pick up my Apple TV. I'm going to wait a bit to see what bugs it has / what gets worked out, and then jump on it. I've been thrilled to hear todays news on that one. Definitely going to pick up an iPod Touch as a gift as well. Good going on those, Apple. iTunes is pretty schweet too.
