Almost certainly low power bluetooth....

You don't need a lot of range between the pocket you put your phone in and the watch on your wrist, and you DO need to conserve as much power as possible if you're keeping the two linked all day long. This is perfect for low power bluetooth v4.0.

What I'd really like to know, though, is what happens when the phone isn't in range of the watch. Do you just get a "Connect phone" type screen or can it function as a stand-alone watch?

Waiting on the same details.

If The :apple:WATCH does not have its own GPS, it's completely useless as a sports watch. I'm not going to show up at a race and run with my brand new iPhone 6 Plus....Hopefully I'm mistaken, and the watch does not require you to bring your iPhone with you in order to track your whereabouts. I don't see who is going to be interested in this as a sports watch if they have to bring an iPhone with them as well.

The watch is completely useless without your phone.

Am I the only one severely underwhelmed by the design of the Apple Watch? It looks like a toy...

This is the day apple dies. You don't revolutionize a product category using the same old desing. The reason the iPhone, iPod and iMac revolutionized everything was because there was no product like them. They had a revolutionary User Interface and a revolutionary design. Apple finally blew it. 349 for a watch that needs an iPhone to fully work? I remember when Tim Cook said at the launch of the iPad mini they weren't afraid of it cannibalizing the iPad because if they didn't do it someone else would. This watch right here screams fear. Fear of being to good, fear of the watch cannibalizing the iPhone. They hyped this product so much and is nothing but an accesory. I'm sad to see the end of Apple but I guess no one can top Steve.

The :apple:Watch interface is nice. The hardware design is pretty cool too. Let’s see what the press says after their hands on. The crown on the right of any watch is why I don’t wear them, so a deal breaker for me - surprised Apple would think of this and still do nothing about it.

I kind of like it but I think they are blowing it by not having it ready for the holiday shopping season.....people are going to really cool off on it just before tax time....

If Ive is so bad why is it that every new laptop looks like a Mac, every Phone looks like an iPhone, every all-in-one PC looks like an iMac .

Get real, Ive is one, if no the, most influential modern designer in the world - certainly in the personal tech world
Thank you for reinforcing my point by pointing out only products where Ive had far more outside feedback.

Notice nobody is copying Ive's more recent designs. Especially his interface design; he's instead copying Microsoft and Google.

Again, thanks for making my point.

First time I see Apple doing a "me too" product.

Surprised they will not make a pre holiday release.

They will sell millions of them.

They will tweak it and come out with a newer version in a year to 18 months and then sell millions more.

Let's be 100% honest here for a moment shall we.

If this watch was shown off in pictures late last week, made by Samsung, Sony, LG, Motorola etc.

It would of been branded an ugly, uninspired, chunky lump of a design with no imagination, and we would of been saying, it will be blown out the water and forgotten about instantly when we see the amazing design Apple has to offer.

That's the gods honest truth and we all know it.

I have to be clear here when I say, yes Apple will have done some great functionality in the device, it will probably work well, and when paired with an iPhone probably be a great device for many.

But it's as if Apple focused almost totally on the software / integration side and how it works, and totally forgot how to make something that people would stop in their tracks, stare at, and go wow, that looks amazing.

I have to say, irrespective of my pro's and con's about Apple, they do some great classic designs, that make a statement and will stand out in years to come as almost works of design art.

This however is, for me, visually, as a piece of design/hardware the most disappointed I've been in something crafted by Apple for, well, almost year dot.

It's actually really sad now, if you look at a Google Image Search and type in iWatch, to see some of the designs people were expecting. Sure a little far fetched some of them, but they showed imagination and something you'd want to pick up and touch.

Just feel so let down :(

I get in and out of my car all day. Each time, when I want to Siri for directions, I have to reach in and grab my phone. Having my directions on my wrist, will make the process effortless.

I will be able to download my audiobooks, and they will be with me and controllable without reaching into my pocket. I'll be able to pay at stores and restaurants without having to reach into my pocket.

The effort of reaching into my pocket is small but not having the distraction is huge. It's that type of integration that makes Apple products great.

You make it sound like grabbing your iPhone, which has to be in close proximity to your iWatch *anyway* is an excruciating task. I think we need to resist hype and look at this objectively.

When you retrieve an iPhone, you much reach into your pocket and put it about what--9 inches from your face? If you were to look at directions on the tiny screen of the iWatch you'd need to raise your hand to about 4 inches from your face.

You don't have to retrieve the iWatch from a pocket but you will have to position closer to your face--I think the effort is the same. If you need to respond to a text or email you'll then need to pull out your iPhone anyway.

i'll pass.. $349 and this is just personal preference but the shape isn't really my taste.

I'll just stick with my nike fuelband.. that works perfect for me when I'm in the gym

both look like cheap $200-400 digital watches, which no self-respecting man or woman should wear on a regular basis.
i feel bad for the billionaire Apple executives who have to ditch their Pateks and Rolexes for this piece of **** a few times for photo ops.

no thanks apple and google. I will stick with my Patek and Rolexes and probably buy a new Fitbit when it comes out for working out.
So much for all the waiting.

Authentication ?

Without Touch ID how can you feel safe letting this make payments ?

What if someone takes it ?

I just found out, you authenticate it with a Pass Key once when you put it on, then it stays authenticated as long as the sensors maintain skin contact.

When you take it off authentication is lost.

COOL !

Honestly what do you expect lol it's macrumors, apple fans are members here.

Also, I cannot agree enough with you on the moto x, it's stylish and practical, and overall just a really nice watch experience. The watch isnt as customizable, so I have to give apple kudos there, but otherwise the apple watch looks like garbage.

I doubt Jobs was involved in this. Building a watch probably was on the board when he was alive but remember the design and UI on these things go back to the drawing board many times. So it's not possible this product was something he saw or approved.

Of course Steve was involved. Why else does it look like an iPhone 3G?

I am extremely disappointed that the iWatch lacks a GPS unit. As a runner, I don't want to carry two devices with me when I run... especially not one of the new larger iPhones. I realize that serious runners make up a small segment of the market for this watch, but it is still seriously disappointing. I will not be purchasing a smart watch until it can function as a standalone device.

:(

Was Almost sold on this until Cook announced it NEEDS an iPhone in order to work!?!

get it to work independently and get it to make and receive phone calls.

IMO- big BIG waste of $$$
Based on Apple's stock price Wall Street agrees- the watch is a Major MISS.
