It's okay Switzerland, you can calm down now.

This. I am not sure it was even a real quote from Ive but this is no threat to Swiss watchmakers. The only one I can see them taking a bit of marketshare from is Swatch. No high-end watch wearer will switch to Apple.

Not a fan of the square shape but then again I like mechanical watches better anyway.

First impression is that its lame.
Steve Jobs was a master of leading the presentation with explaining why you absolutely had to have the new gadget. Instead with the iWatch I felt lost, and still feel like unanswered questions. What does it do. They started talking about how pretty is it. Who cares if I don't know what it does. Great UI. So what.

I still couldn't tell if its an iPhone companion, lets you access iPhone apps or does it run its own apps. How does it play music? Do you plug headphones into it or your phone? How do you do phone calls? Through your phone or it. It generally felt like if I need my phone for all this stuff, I might as well just use my phone. Why spend $350 on some other gadget thats a poor excuse for a phone.

They come with new giant sized phones as the biggest innovation that no one else has ever thought of. Abandon the 4" iPhone 5s as old technology not worthy of an update. Then announce an iWatch with a tiny <1" screen. Too big and too small.

Hallelujah
I wholeheartedly agree with the entire post.

This is the first time I have ever been excited about a smart watch. I never liked wearing watches...any kind. But this Apple Watch really makes me want to get one. It looks cool and the possibilites in terms of the functions and features are absolutely amazing. It is very exciting.

All this does is prevent you from taking one second to pull the iPhone out of your pocket to do almost all the advertised tasks better. It seems like a solution looking for a problem.

The only thing that is mildly interesting to me is how it tracks your physical activity--though comparing it to a personal trainer is ludicrous and over the top. Is it going to spot me at the gym now?
Agreed. This can be done best with a fitbit+ and an iPhone. Otherwise the iWatch looks hideous, too big, too luxurious. I can picture my mother or other 80 yr olds drooling over it. Or people with too much money. Johny Ives hasn't been around normal people enough. Too many rich people running around Apple HQ.

Meh... Very surprised at the blandness. It shows how hard it is to make a watch that is really appealing, in a relatively short time. Samsung got slammed; Apple should be too.

Short time my ass... apple started this a year before samsung who is now own version 4 of their watch. Apple should be slammed harder...

However, it does have a few unique features the others don't.... yet... but all are rumored too soon.

If someone wants a hit with a wearable, the wearable has to not require tethering to a phone that can already do the same things better.... and not many people are going to make phone calls from their wrist.... when the phone is a few inches away.... give me the iWatch, less fugly, without the need for iPhone.... and we'll pay $350

As a glorified phone cord to my wireless phone, no thanks

This. So much this.

Jony Ive is like George Lucas. George produced amazing stuff when he was small-time enough that people could tell him when and where his ideas sucked, and that crucible of feedback made his creations magnificent.

Absent the crucible of feedback, Lucas jumps the shark 11 times out of 10. Jony Ive is apparently the same way.

If Ive is so bad why is it that every new laptop looks like a Mac, every Phone looks like an iPhone, every all-in-one PC looks like an iMac .

Get real, Ive is one, if no the, most influential modern designer in the world - certainly in the personal tech world

So glad so many people in here dislike it. Less competion when released.
However I have a feeling most people on here say one thing then do another.

no matter how bad a product is. they rush and buy it.

yet its inferior to the competition.

Anyone who thought this was going to be sleek and thing like a Movado or Skagen were living in fantasy land. Miniaturization simple isn't there yet.

I my humble opinion this is a fine looking watch which seems to have the best user experience. I think it's safe to say that in the next 3-5 years it may be as thin and sleek as one of the watches I mentioned above.

I actually didn't expect the plethora of apps they showed or at least showed icons for but I think the health stuff eliminates the need for the 4 or 5 apps I have to use now. Some of that will of course depend on if it will be able to connect to my BT bike computer and be able to pull in the stats off of that.

Overall I think it's a fine design for a first version and as a matter of fact it really isn't much thicker than some of the Rolex or Brietling or Invicta watches which are all quite thick and heavy. So in that respect it is somewhat sleek.

Will I buy for $349? Not sure. Maybe. I'm in no big rush (Actually don't have a choice in that) so I'll make up my mind in early 2015.

And please don't mention the Moto 360. While it is round and maybe a bit thinner, but that could be an optical illusion, it also does not have half the functionality.

All in all it is about what I expected but a bit prettier.

Disclaimer: All the above is my personal opinion.

I agree, miniaturisation just isn't quite there yet. Battery life is also an issue with current technology. In three years I could see this being on hell of a Watch but it's not ready yet. But looking back to 2007 at the first iPhone and looking at the 6 it's a massive gulf between them, same thing will happen with the Apple Watch, as it no doubt has huge potential. But personally I think I'll stick with an Omega on my wrist and an iPhone in my pocket.

I want to hear more about the health functions because that would be the only reason I would buy one

Motorola had no problem.

Except that theirs is not all round. It's flat on the bottom so while the whole design looks great, the face of it looks a bit off.

Round watches are a holdout from analog times. I like round but digital is better with rectangular (there's a reason most computer monitors are not round).

Well I think the new Apple watch is totally ugly but it is definitely not as ugly as a Movado or worth less than an ounce of spit like Invictas.

Really don't understand why people are complaining about the 'thickness'. Chunky watches are some of the most popular and most sought after (Hublot Big Bang anyone?)

I highly doubt overall it's any thicker than your average Rolex, and all they do is tell the time!

Yeah..you are solo right.. O, no wait. You are talking cr*p! Give us the analysis or shut up!

My wrists shall remain bare

I haven't worn a watch on my wrist for over 10 years and although I had strong confidence that Apple would change this once they revealed their watch, after seeing the :apple:WATCH my wrist shall remain bare.

GPS on :apple:watch?

If The :apple:WATCH does not have its own GPS, it's completely useless as a sports watch. I'm not going to show up at a race and run with my brand new iPhone 6 Plus....Hopefully I'm mistaken, and the watch does not require you to bring your iPhone with you in order to track your whereabouts. I don't see who is going to be interested in this as a sports watch if they have to bring an iPhone with them as well.

I usually take my watch off before I go to bed anyway so having to charge it once a day isn't a big deal for me, as far as battery life. I realize other people may have a bigger issue with it, but if charging the Apple Watch once a day is such an inconvience for you than you might want to buy a Pebble instead.

Dear Apple,

Please be more obnoxiously, defiantly mum about the battery life of this thing. Because it's such a great sign that the bleeding obvious first question on everyone's mind is the one question you're not touching with a 50 ft pole.

Also, please make many more (and LONGER) videos where Jony Ive tilts his head and passionately recites long lists of four syllable adjectives, obscure materials and manufacturing processes like he was a chef on some food porn network.

If this turns out useful, I would have to wear a watch on each hand.
A nice one on my left and a practical on my right ;-)
I understand they make it turn "off" when you are not looking at it, but I didn't like the look of the black screen on Tim's wrist.
I'd much rather it was "on" all the time, much better looking, but it would probably only last until lunch....
