Another problem: Its hard to wear two wristwatches. What does the guy with the $3000 Rolex or Omega - the sort of person who is the theoretical target market for this device - do here? Apple has not only to get these folks to cough up $500 or so for the Apple Watch, but also to leave their fancy other watches at home.

Does Apple need the Apple Watch to be a smash hit? No, they obviously don't. But what would Apple consider to be a success? Five million sold, ten? Anything less than that, and its going to be difficult to build the sort of App "ecosystem" to make this a real game changer.

Yeah, that's my problem. I have a damn nice Omega and while I think the AppleWatch is interesting, i am not sure I am dropping my Omega. Maybe I will use the AppleWatch just for working out but still, seems kind of odd.
I wish it was an accessory like a band ala Fitbit that you could use in conjunction with your current watch.

That said, it's pretty impressive the tech on this watch.

Now, this watch is the real deal (http://www.cyrus-watches.ch/en/index.php?video=klepcys). If I only had the necessary $$$...
Not sure if I am convince by the Apple Watch. Some nice and even impressive features - but bulky and not very pretty. No technical details yet. I think I'll pass and dream of my alternative watch (all mechanical btw) and stay with my old automatic mechanical Omega watch. But time will tell (pun indented).

Hmm... many people hated it when the first iPad was unveiled. Will history repeats itself?

indeed a lot of people hated it, I think most people wanted it to have a fully fleshed desktop OS but look at it now.

I think this thing will be widely used months after the release.
like it or not everyone's going to have one.

Jony Ive + Steve Jobs = best design duo

Jony Ive = mediocre designer
This. So much this.

Jony Ive is like George Lucas. George produced amazing stuff when he was small-time enough that people could tell him when and where his ideas sucked, and that crucible of feedback made his creations magnificent.

Absent the crucible of feedback, Lucas jumps the shark 11 times out of 10. Jony Ive is apparently the same way.

Anyone who thought this was going to be sleek and thing like a Movado or Skagen were living in fantasy land. Miniaturization simple isn't there yet.

I my humble opinion this is a fine looking watch which seems to have the best user experience. I think it's safe to say that in the next 3-5 years it may be as thin and sleek as one of the watches I mentioned above.

I actually didn't expect the plethora of apps they showed or at least showed icons for but I think the health stuff eliminates the need for the 4 or 5 apps I have to use now. Some of that will of course depend on if it will be able to connect to my BT bike computer and be able to pull in the stats off of that.

Overall I think it's a fine design for a first version and as a matter of fact it really isn't much thicker than some of the Rolex or Brietling or Invicta watches which are all quite thick and heavy. So in that respect it is somewhat sleek.

Will I buy for $349? Not sure. Maybe. I'm in no big rush (Actually don't have a choice in that) so I'll make up my mind in early 2015.

And please don't mention the Moto 360. While it is round and maybe a bit thinner, but that could be an optical illusion, it also does not have half the functionality.

All in all it is about what I expected but a bit prettier.

Disclaimer: All the above is my personal opinion.

That crown thingy will get quite a workout and be the first thing to fail or come off.

Crowngate!

PS: I fail to see why I would buy a small screen watch @ 349 STARTING (LOL) when I can look at a bigger screen iPhone 6 in the same amount of time for
almost the same amount of money.

.

well software execution doesn't look too bad but as far as all the fashion hires go, i guess they hired only blind ones.

I don't hate it, but a few things irk me about it.

I'm also not one for smaller is better as I wish the iPhone 5/6 were as thick as the 4 and just gave us better battery life.

But, that watch is fat. I own an Omega Seamaster Professional and it just doesn't look in the same league. I realise there are huge engineering challenges but it needs to be thinner to have that sleek look about it.

It's a real shame the display doesn't stretch to the edge of the bezel, I believe it's an OLED display so it should be entirely possible.

UI is decent but some of that Emoji rubbish was just cringeworthy.

Seems simple but I wish it was round, just would make it a bit more classier. Also gold watches != class.

Aside from that I do like some of the touches, Sapphire, sensors, digital crown, taptic feedback, nice engraved detailing like high end Swiss watches.

But over all it feels like a very 'first attempt' sort of product.

A watch

From first impressions I think it looks mice. I pooed the idea when I saw the Quanta presentation leak but I eat my words. This is a nicely put together device and while a tad expensive, I think it's worth it. With everything else tied like health monitoring the bog standard chat, text and the inclusion of payments this for now is setting the standard. It's been a well thought out product.

I hope in QuickTime that they will enhance the design further and set themselves further apart from the competition.

Don't Like it at all, its very ugly, looks like a hybrid galaxy gear, pebble, and crayola crayons. Also it 'starts' at 350. If you notice the sport version doesn't have a saffire display, a necessary feature of a watch imo, also it looks cheap with this rubber band. Saffire display +50, leather band +25 (knowing apple maybe more) and then thats really the starting cost of the sport watch. Now, metal band, +100. so $500 for the basic 'fancy' watch, which is in reality just a standard watch.

The watch doesn't do anything special enough to warrant such a high cost, just a product with huge margins. It's also ugly, and bulky. I could imagine the price will come down similarly to the original iphone. Now for a 150$ addition to an iPhone 6+ or 200 for the fancier version, I might consider getting one. I still think the moto x looks the best right now, and by the way, this is coming from the only apple user.

Better than

many silly mockups people were doing and published here. Even funny that some of the other news sites copied the pictures from macrumors.

I would have liked a round but still quite good and price is great compared to some of the fitness watches.

Looks like there is nobody left at Apple to tell Jonny Ive when his ideas are just plain awful. The first reaction should have been: "WTF. Are you kidding me? Go back to the drawing board!"

Or just hire a better designer... might be easier (and cheaper).

LOL. I like this. It's as if SJ was the design guru and JI was just the dogs body. Really?

Plus this is clearly a Marc Newson design... can you not tell that? really?

What is the difference between the Watch Edition and the Watch Edition???

Great naming convention there.

You people saying "Steve Jobs is turning in his grave"... do you not think Steve was fingers deep in the design of this product? Apple doesn't just work on 1 device every year. They work on products 10 - 20 years down the road and update as they see fit.

Cut the bullish*t.

I doubt Jobs was involved in this. Building a watch probably was on the board when he was alive but remember the design and UI on these things go back to the drawing board many times. So it's not possible this product was something he saw or approved.
