Did anyone else have to pay for shipping for the UTD program order? I thought that the $9.95 was the cost of the shipping and handling? While placing my order, they added another $4 even though the order page said free shipping!

Nope, was $0 for me. Try canceling and re-ordering, if that fails give Apple a call, I'm sure they'll clear it up.

You might also have confused that $4 with tax

Actually the price is quite a bit above the price it should have:

$29 * 7.1 (current exchange rate) * 1.25 = 258 SEK, in other words the price is 23% higher than it should be.

According to Wikipedia, you have a VAT of 25%, so when that is taken into account, you're getting it for the same amount. Again, got a problem then kick the politicians out who tax you into the ground; 25% VAT is exortion, especially considering the high personal tax rates, property taxes and other assorted ways of screwing the average Swede out of more cash.

I've already number crunched it for New Zealand (exchange rate and taking GST off the NZ price) and here in NZ we're only paying US$6 more for it - which isn't too bad considering that all Apple support is handled by an Australian help desk free of charge and the extra costs of doing business in a small country.

How likely is build 10A432 the gold master? Have Apple ever released a GM that wasn't a build released via developer preview?

 Glad it is finally coming out. Will be testing it on my new Mini (which should arrive at the same time).

Like others have mentioned here though, I probably won't use it fully, not until at least 10.6.1. That, and now I have to wait for some of my support software to be made compatible with SL (I hate that part).

Let's face it: It's not a new OS, it's a Service Pack for a two years old OS, and it drops support for two hardware architectures: 32-Bit and 64-Bit PowerPC.

Windows 7 also is not a new OS, but a large Service Pack for Vista, and Microsoft also gave a rebate on pre-orders.

The thing is: Both 'new' operating systems - Snow Leopard and Windows 7 - should have been made available free of charge for existing customers.

Well... A servicepack usually adds or changes components of an already existing OS (Vista to Windows7 IMHO).

A servicepack usually doesn´t include a substantial rewrite of the OS in major parts, new versions of the major apps (e.g. Quicktime, and now even including all the Pro functionality) and definitely doesn´t drop support of chipset architectures.

So, in my book. SL is definitely NOT a servicepack.

How would you like it if an update to Leopard on your PPC would suddenly cripple your Powerbook?

Can mods please delete all related talk about currency? I'll be honest I'm from US and don't give a crap but even if I was from Europe... SL talk has nothing to do with currency. Please stop. A bold message in the first post warning about it would be nice

Now how come those that pre-ordered with UTD still says shipping: Sept.?
this thread is not about SL, it's about SL ordering, pricing, shipping and all the related topics. if you wanna talk about SL, go find another thread.

on the other hand, your ignorance and cry for censorship just pathetic.

I've got half a mind to do one of those 'unboxing' photo albumns where I rip the damn packaging to pieces, stamp on it, set it on fire, then eat the ashes. I can't believe people are so obsessed, or indeed MORE obsessed about the damn cardboard rather than the gigabytes of goodness inside.

(wipes away a tear)... ah, thank you for this. I literally laughed, almost nasal-ejected coffee.

You know, Apple is so "green" nowadays, you probably could eat the ashes. All supposed to be soy ink, renewable cardboard and whatnot, isn't it? If you put it in between sandwich slices, you might not be able to tell the difference between it and a Big Mac...

I'll be at the apple store the morning for sure!
I've had the torrent version for a week or so where I upgraded from 10.5
Now I want the real copy!

He already multiplied it by 1.25 :)

Why? I expect bug fixes and security improvements for free as part of the software maintenance process, but software functionality enhancements are another matter. It's nice when enhancements come along with the fixes, but it's unreasonable to demand enhancements for free.

My UTD order still says it'll ship in september. Will it update itself over the next few hours/days or should I cancel and reorder? If that has any effect on it, I ordered the french version, being from Quebec.

When can we expect the first update to Snow Leopard? I suppose it depends if it has any horrifying bugs, but I'm generally wary of buying the v.0 of a new OS X till I've seen if there are any major issues.

I suppose I'll give it a few weeks and see how it goes. I want to update to Snow Leopard so I can wipe Leopard, as it's been a bit glitchy lately, but I don't want to waste time replacing Leopard with Leopard, and I can handle its glitchiness till Snow Leopard looks solid enough for me to upgrade.

Can't wait to dig my teeth into developing for Grand Central and OpenCL, I've got a whole lot of things in a current project of mine that could really benefit from them, the big challenge is going to be developing it while keeping cross-platform components though!

Where are you shipping to? I got mine for 10.55 or something after tax

Yay! :D

So it will hit shops earlier than initially expected, which is great: it means that we get to find out how well, say, a May '07 MacBook manages with it sooner.

I will probably buy it in Spring, partly for 10.6.3 or beyond, partly for iLife/iWork '09 cheekiness - if I must spend £129, I am not buying software that is soon to be replaced.

To all those who have pre-ordered, I wish you luck on Install Day.

Just a reminder to check and see if you're company has an EPP discount - its a few dollars cheaper!. $24.10 - roughly 17% off and still has a delivery date of 8/28!

Outrageous Canadian Exchange Rate

$35 Cdn instead of $29 US implies a 1.20 exchange rate when actual exchange rate is 1.074, should have been $31.

Oh, stop moaning. For years, every single expense on every trip to Europe and the UK has been more expensive by 25-100% for us Americans. Suck it up!

And that bears what relation to people in the UK buying a product from the UK?

The USD exchange rate was only *really* favourable to the UK for the last two or three years. Before that you had it pretty good for a long time with your dollar so how about YOU suck it up!

Online Help experience

I thought I'd give Apple's online help a whirl to see if they could answer my question regarding the Snow Leopard upgrade. I wanted to know whether I could do a clean install with the Snow Leopard upgrade version.

I'm actually running Leopard at the moment, but I didn't want the canned answer of "yes, you should buy the upgrade edition", so I said I was running Windows 7.

I think the response I got was pretty unprofessional and showed complete lack of understanding.

Hi, my name is Donna G. Welcome to Apple!
You: Hi there... Snow Leopard upgrade...
Donna G: Hello
Donna G: How may I help you today?
You: how does it verify if I already have Leopard?
You: Do I have to first have Leopard installed?
Donna G: What OS do you have installed on your Mac now?
You: I can imagine that being very annoying if I need to do a clean install of Snow Leopard.
You: I have Windows at the moment...
You: but ideally I don't want to have to go back to Leopard first to install Snow Leopard.
Donna G: Are you asking if you can install Snow Leopard on your PC?
You: No.
You: I have a MacBook Air.
Donna G: Okay, and what OS do you have installed on your MacBook Air?
You: Windows 7.
Donna G: Thank you for shopping the Apple Online Store.
Donna G: We do not assist with Windows questions.

Give Apple a call and see if it is being prepared for shipment. My UTD order is still showing "Not Shipped" and "Ships: September" online, but when I called in, the agent said my order was being prepared to ship and would arrive on August 28th.

to be honest guys, i got the developer copy(not a dev myself) and no, im not going to buy snow leopard because i dont think its fair i have a one year old MacBook and just be screwed over by stuff like OpenCL because apple didnt use a good quality GPU/

Then you shouldn't have bought a Mac because Apple consistent develops for their current machines, and if it works in older machines/OSes great, if not, too bad.

The real "Apple Tax" is not the premium on hardware b/c it's really not much more expensive than a truly comparable PC. The true tax is the fact Macs are not as upgradable and require replacement sooner than comparable PCs. I find I can't keep a desktop for more than 3 years or a laptop for more than 2 because new technology advances at about that rate.

But 90% of the Mac user base is home users who typically don't care about having the latest and greatest OS. (Same for PC home users too). Those of us who are obsessed with being current, either out of hobby or true need, have to realize we chose an expensive computer system.
