Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Apple gets no new customers from their puny "sales", and yet loses potential money from customers who were going to buy from Apple anyway, isn't that only hurting Apple?

Evidently Apple don't seem to think so and they will have a lot of sales data and market research to make that judgement.

It's about clearing stock and getting more traffic than they would without such an event and having those customers often buy things they wouldn't otherwise.

What I meant by my comment was that it isn't a day when companies are generous towards consumers. It's nothing more than a lure to get people spending and Apple obviously know what sort of discounts they need to offer to make Black Friday work for them.

So you're telling me a puny 10% is going to draw a ton of customers? When you can't currently buy a computer from Apple for less than $1000 (not including the dead Mac Mini)? BF is about deals and bargains. And bargains are items in the low to mid 100's of dollars. Saving $100 off a normally $1000 machine isn't significant. Saving $300 off a normally $700 machine is.

To say a 10% discount isn't good enough because other computers can be had for less (often end of line or poor quality)

Completely unsupported statement. Low-priced does not equal low quality.

stinks to me of entitlement. I'm sure someone will quote me (well maybe not now) of being a fanboi, but there are a lot of people on this forum that ignore logic and expect Apple to bend over backwards for them when it isn't in Apple's interests at all.

Nowhere did I say I expected Apple to bend over backwards for me. In fact, I stated I expected Apple to do the exact opposite. And I used a lot more logic than the logical fallacy of an ad hominem attack.

Move along.... nothing to see here.

Meh........ Modest discounts, if that.

If Apple is indeed calling it a "Black Friday" sale, it doesn't deserve that name unless they are prepared to offer Black Friday-like discounts. (which they most certainly will not)

And Apple obviously feel at 10% (or whatever they do this year) the balance is right for them. Maybe they would be better off with bigger deals in the long run but that is their choice and they have the information to make such decisions.

I wasn't basing that on prices but on what I have previously seen on sale on Black Friday.

I apologise for misinterpreting the intentions behind your comments. Sometimes it is hard to tell when someone isn't one of the crowd on this forum that feel Apple owe them everything they want and that anything Apple does that they don't approve of or doesn't benefit them is wrong for Apple.

Thank you.

That's exactly what I was saying previously. :)

We i guess we in NZ will be the first to see what they are offering... giving a 10% off a macbook will still make it dearer than it was several weeks ago thanks to the massive dollar drop recently against the US$

"deserve", how funny. Yes yea grand arbiter of all retail nomenclature, Apple be not worthy of such a claim.

Hey, if you're gonna buy an Apple product anyway, 10% is 10%. And the bottom line is rather straight forward, Apple doesn't need to discount any further, and if they did, then they likely will (as they are doing now to help support some of their retail partners).

"If you're gonna buy an Apple product anyway", then why is Apple only hurting itself by discounting?

EDIT: 10% just isn't worthy of a Black Friday sale, and will attract no additional customers.

Any ideas when, and if, the UK will be getting it :D

They did last year (I don't recall it happening before that in the UK). It was 30th November, 1 week after Black Friday in the USA. There were modest discounts - I bought the Apple Bluetooth headset for £69 (normal price was £79). There were a limited number of other similar reductions.

That would be an issue if the NZ stores repriced their stock - I'm sure you know as well as I do that Apple hasn't repriced the MB due to the dollar yet.

We're not talking petrol here.

If anything, in relative terms, the price of the MB and MBP has decreased over the last few months because there hasn't been any alteration to the price.

discounts?

I notice on the ad, it doesn't actually mention a discount anywhere - just "Great gift ideas".

I wonder if the deals will be free bundled items rather than percentage discounts, like the back-to-school free ipod with a mac deals. So maybe free ipods with macs, and free accessories of sometype with ipods (or perhaps itunes vouchers)

Thoughts?

Uhh... no. Do you know of anywhere that lets you stack discounts?
Well, Apple will stack discounts. I am not sure if it works for student discounts on this, but last year for this sale, I got my employee discount (not through Apple, but through CCE) and this sale for some iPod nanos. They will only do it if you call though, and not at the retail stores, or at least that is what the Apple Rep told me when I placed the order. But be prepared for a long wait on hold.

Depending on the circumstances, many places stack discounts. Staples comes to mind.

Whatever it is, it's gonna be pretty lackluster, that's for sure.

Amazon ,MacMall and some other retailers will probably offer better prices. The most apple will probably cut from the new books might be $200.

IMO, 10% isn't too "puny" at all. $1800 MBA - 180 = $1620, a considerably lower price. Unless you are really so thriftless that you don't think an extra $180 in your pocket is worth anything? I agree that the 10% that everyone is speculation won't be drawing tons of people, but it will definitely net them more sales than not. Also, Apple isn't all laptops and computers; they have these things called "iPods" that are quite popular as well. They're pretty popular as gifts, so an extra 10% off is just more incentive to get one.
