Seems weird that apple is willing to give up control over hardware and collaborate with the auto manufacturers. I'm sure the initial implementation of ios in the car will be awkward and hideous, very un-Apple. I'm guessing they see the potential of the "connected car" and are making sacrifices to make sure iOS is a part of it.

But what happened to all those patents about on-screen tactile feedback? And wasn't there a small company they bought that had imbedded physical knobs on a display screen?

I think Apple is going to control the software and push it toward Siri interaction. So the hardware isn't going to be used.

The tactile feedback is coming for the iPhone. I doubt it will feel like knobs on a screen, but it is supposed to do something. But this device is not going to be designed for you for reach across to the dash board and touch something. The driver will be expected to use on steering wheel controls or voice commands.

Has anyone heard if the models by the manufacturers have announced? I'm specifically looking for Hynundai but I'm interested in any supported model line up.

Once Apple has iPhones in a decent number of cars it should really help their mapping. Traffic info should also be really good.

Yes, assuming Apple takes some of this data, the traffic simulations should become much much better. Also, Apple might use this to update their map data as well. But the real time traffic information is going to be fantastic.

----------

I hear you, the sooner the better.
But I want them to feel their mistake if you see what I mean.

I truly don't get it. iOS users are far more valuable to luxury car makers are they not ?

My guess is that for luxury car makers in the U.S., their customers are 80% or higher iPhone users.

Anyone to create a protest Website to put pressure on VAG for integration in Audi and Porsche ?

I'm part of the crowd that says my next car purchase will depend on the availability of CarPlay.

And I guess I'm not the only one !
Get in touch.

Audi's going pure Android.

This cherry-picked support for 3rd-party apps is a disappointing trend with Apple, where some apps get much better treatment than others. Apple should publish the specs and API for car integration and allow any app to take advantage of this (and conversely, allow users to show any app they want in the car).
I think it won't be long before it supports at least things like music apps, which support Apple's standard remote controls - play, pause forward, reverse.

I currently have no interest in CarPlay and I am a heavy iOS user. I’d guess car manufacturers would require a NAV package ($2,500 in my 2013 BMW 335i) as a base for CarPlay.

I opted for NAV even though the BMW Navigation menu system is average at best. My contacts, phone, and traffic in NAV are very solid though.

I may consider CarPlay if it was fully integrated into my heads-up display. I'd prefer a wider more colorful heads-up display because I find it extremely useful. Who looks at the NAV screen while driving these days anyway?

iOS in the car is a better name.

Except that might confuse people. Already I've seen some questioning whether they have to own an iPhone to use the car. But the cars themselves won't be running iOS, it's just a signal being fed to the display via the phone.

See, this name was quite obvious.... not sure how I didn't see it.

Hope there are aftermarket manufacturers, or I'll be waiting a while!!

They have Airplay and Airprint... One would think this should be called Airdrive or Airdash

I would never have thougth of Carplay. Maybe their next big thing will be Carprint, who knows?

so since in the States autopark featured cars have not been allowed, due to the fact that no one could be charged with responsibility for the dents on other cars, I think we have found the future culprit to finally allow this

(I am european, and I don't and I won't own an autopark enabled car)
Umm how so? I live in Arizona for what you call "the states" and we have auto park enabled cars for sale and is an advertised feature by all manufacturers. Maybe certain states??

I like some of the changes made to you UI. Those rectangles always looked off to me. I'll be happy to see some of them go in iOS 7.1.

My current BMW has a combox which allows integration with my iPhone. So my iDrive screen displays cover art, split screen, Facebook and can play videos streamed from my iPhone.
It can also display an Ipod GUI so I am hoping that it will just require a firmware upgrade to take advantage of IOS functionality although knowing BMW they will see an opportunity to charge for the upgrade rather allow me to stream firmware upgrades over the net which is what i normally do.

is there a reason for the need of the phone having a lightning connector?

one would understand ios7 being needed

i am a little surprised. I want to just get in the car and go, listening to my music, without having to fish out my phone and plug it in.

I sort of do that now with Bluetooth car audio, but I must confess, I usually fish out the phone anyway and plug it into lightning to charge it. But that's optional, I don't need to do it for a quick ride.

I don't think it's a tech problem, between Bluetooth and WiFi there is plenty high speed communication.

It probably has to do with battery drain. My guess is that it would drain the battery so fast they decided to make it "hardwired" only.

Interesting that Apple went with "Carplay" that sounds like something Android would have chosen you know like Google Play....

Battery drain from running Maps is way too high. Imagine you want turn by turn navigation for a 45 minute drive. If you have a year old iPhone with a depleted capacity battery said:
Imagine you mapquested the trip beforehand and printed out the directions.
Imagine you plan ahead and look at old fashion maps and write down the info.
Imagine you memorize the signs and other points of orientation along the way to get there and back.
Imagine you get out of the car and ask for directions (Say at a gas station)

Imagine you use a car charger.

Unfortunately all no longer possible in todays world:-( Sad:-(

I'm guessing that the automakers are going to bundle CarPlay into a $3000 "technology package" and not make it an A-la-carte option. Why?

Because why would they want to give up their huge margins in their existing crappy built-in navigation systems?

Apple has to set a standard of quality at such an early stage of launch. Do you really want a ton of crappy apps at your fingertips in the car? If so then you might as well just wait for Google's solution. It will launch with a million apps. Good luck finding one that works well.
