This is good news. The iPhone's screen is far too small to manipulate safely whilst on the move.

It'll be interesting to see what sort of prices car mainstream manufacturers charge for CarPlay compatability. Currently, in-car entertainment and sat nav are very beloved products for the manufacturers - it's these added extras that give them their profit margins - e.g. they can charge over £1000 for a sat nav that actually isn't even as good as a £50 TomTom or for a "high-end" audio system that probably only costs them £100. I don't see them giving up such a lucrative cash-cow without charging a significant premium for CarPlay support - very much in the same way Cinemas make their profits on popcorn rather than movie tickets.

Nowhere on here does it say that you have to use your iPhone for navigation. I'm sure they will still have their own built-in navigation. This gives you the option to have a more all-in-one integration with your iPhone, if you want.

If you have to use your own satnav this becomes the most totally useless feature in the world.

Since I am in the Apple ecosystem my next car will definitely have to have this integration. I'm loving it.

Wow, I'd never have thought Apple would be advertising their new CarPlay feature on a Honda dashboard. Honestly, both Mercedes and Jaguar would've been better choices. Not to mention Ferrari. :)

Oh well, whoever buys a car only for the iPhone-integration is most likely to buy a Honda anyways, I suppose.

What's wrong with Honda? I've owned Honda cars for over a decade, they're great cars.

You have to teather via lightning cable?

Surely not in this day and age?

Definitely. You can't run the map feature in a car, jumping from cell tower to cell tower, and not drain the battery fast. So your phone is going to be plugged in. Also it should be set outside of your reach so you rely on Siri and the car's controls (which are hopefully located on the steering wheel).

Also it is illegal in most states. 5 points on your license in New York City if they see you with your phone in your hand while you are driving.

First manufacturer to put a pop up spot on the dash with standardized adapters for all popular phones and tablets (hopefully with wireless charging) wins.

To be honest I have hardly ever had any problem with Apple maps (Resident in UK also) I have both Google and Apple maps, the Google one gets used less and less.
Lucky you - if I tell apple maps to take me to my home town (just putting the town in - nothing pre defined) it takes me go a beach 5 miles away and tells me to head into the sea and swim 5 miles into the sea so I get into the shipping channel! It's still 10 miles off and the Road is very narrow and ever since apple maps came out it's been gridlocked every day in the summer with tourists!

Can I ask, what town is that?

While walking I tried to use Apple Maps to take me to the passport office in London. It took me to a park two blocks away.

Is this a new product category?

I'm expecting pretty high adoption for this. Folks overseas may not realize, but at the high end of the economic segment in the U.S., iPhone usage is nearly 100%. It is rare to see upper class folks with Androids. Certainly nearly every family which is looking at a BMW or Mercedes is going to have an iPhone user and probably the whole family will be iPhone users.

So how much is Apple going to try to charge car companies for this? Or is it just supposed to be something that gets Apple more iPhone sales?

----------

Or Possibly Wi-Fi or another wireless technology. It would be great if drivers could keep their iPhones in their pockets or elsewhere in the car without having the phone physically connected to anything. Only one phone could be connected at a time, but even passengers could connect a phone without taking it out of a pocket.

Battery drain from running Maps is way too high. Imagine you want turn by turn navigation for a 45 minute drive. If you have a year old iPhone with a depleted capacity battery, it will be dead or near dead by the time you get there. You certainly won't make the drive back.

6 Months later: Galaxy in the car, made by Samsung inspired by Apple...

Well I'm very curious about this Carplay and I'm living in Switzerland so why not going to see it during the expo :)

No! Samsung would never release galaxy in the car...

It's called s-Carplay :D
