I'm a big fan of Apple...

but man those icons are over-exposed. It's not that car displays' icons look better than Apple's, but at least my eyes get to look at something else inside my car, since I see so much of Apple's graphics during the rest of my day.

It's a shame Chrysler (or Jeep/Dodge/RAM/Fiat) isn't on first rollout. Hope they get the ball rolling, because GM/Ford are surely (possibly?) going to use this as advertising against Chrysler.

Too bad my parents will only buy Chrysler vehicles since my dad works for them.

I would hope that eventually this functionality is integrated into some aftermarket head units. It doesn't look like it'd be that difficult to do, but Apple probably wouldn't allow it...

It just doesn't work anymore. The identical colors are confusing at best. There have removed any visual cue that would make each icon unique and recognizable.

In a broader scope, I feel this is too little and too late. Something tells me Google is set to win the car OS battle. :(

Name one part of the Mobile industry where it is a winner take all? This battle does not exist on the level that you are thinking!

What car manufacturer going to force you to use CarPlay? It will either be optional package or the car will utilize other software if you're not using an iPhone.

That depends on the options they offer, I actually see this CarPlay failing, because it ONLY works with iOS right? Yet most people keep a car for a long time, and all other car systems will work with ANY device.

So you are being forced to use iOS if you choose CaraPlay. But I bet they all offer other systems from Microsoft and Blackberry and Android along side CarPlay.

So you are more forced to use iOS then forced to use CarPlay, so long as the car has options for other devices and systems from other makes.

So just as you said actually haha.

When they say Toyota, I wonder if that means Lexus as well?
I never see Lexus mentioned in any of these announcements. :(

How many in-car announcments do they need

I mean this is probably the 5th announcement in the last year or so about Apple wanting to be integrated in the car. We get it Apple, you want to be in the car.

6 Months later: Galaxy in the car, made by Samsung inspired by Apple...

Well I'm very curious about this Carplay and I'm living in Switzerland so why not going to see it during the expo :)

The S-Car-Go

I hope the other manufacturers get the update fairly soon. We buy used cars so I'd like to be able to get this in a Subaru that is a couple years old a few years from now.

Hardly copying, and kinda funny how this is a job listing by MERCEDES one of the very makers included in CarPlay's rollout hahahahaha.

Yeah, all this is, is what I said, makers will NOT offer CarPlay only, they will offer multiple solutions because they realise the world does not spin around Apple. But considering Google have been talking about integration for a while now, they aren't copying, they are following the rest of the industry that people like Blackberry and Microsoft have already started.
If anything Apple is yet again following and copying those two if you want to use your analogy. When in reality, they too are just following the industry to get market share and money.

As for those asking about their systems being updated, I would seriously doubt they will be. Best of asking the car makers and NOT Apple, but no point asking now as you'll only be told they have no idea. But I wouldn't hold my breath as you don't know what hardware is behind the CarPlay systems.

Anyone to create a protest Website to put pressure on VAG for integration in Audi and Porsche ?

I'm part of the crowd that says my next car purchase will depend on the availability of CarPlay.

And I guess I'm not the only one !
Get in touch.

I'll protest against the use of only one type of integration. You should be able to use any phone you want.

i am a little surprised. I want to just get in the car and go, listening to my music, without having to fish out my phone and plug it in.

I sort of do that now with Bluetooth car audio, but I must confess, I usually fish out the phone anyway and plug it into lightning to charge it. But that's optional, I don't need to do it for a quick ride.

I don't think it's a tech problem, between Bluetooth and WiFi there is plenty high speed communication.

It probably has to do with battery drain. My guess is that it would drain the battery so fast they decided to make it "hardwired" only.

what about the 30 pin connector on the devices that support ios7?

This looks like a par on with Ford Sync... only on more "mobile" level. By the sounds of it, this "iOS in the Car" thing, once Apples one it, they go nuts so everything including the kitchen sink will be controlled "probably" as well.

Ford Sync was so bad it should not be mentioned. There is a reason they are abandoning it.

I don't think that has anything to do with hardware limitation. IMO that is totally a way to make people upgrade. Also, how much longer with those devices get support? 6 months?

Google started their system several months after 7.0 announced it. So yeah, apple pushed this into reality. Not sure why microsoft never got their sync junk to work well, but I hope this has no such issues.

I wonder if Jony Ive is going to sell his Bentley... ;)

Here’s hoping that it hits those other manufacturers soon, or the list of cars I want next/can afford is pretty limited.

I've found mine to be totally fine, but I'm in the UK and have the non touchscreen version, I have read however a lot of American users have had problems?
I am looking forward to getting my system upgraded to the version 2 with App Sync and then I may give the app sync TomTom a go, but I bet TomTom will charge for it haha. But currently in the UK you cannot upgrade the system yourself, a garage has to do it for you.
I do miss controlling the cars aircon and heating via voice though, I could do that with my last Ford using their own system. Was hoping they would update the new Ford Sync one to do this too.
