That depends on the options they offer, I actually see this CarPlay failing, because it ONLY works with iOS right? Yet most people keep a car for a long time, and all other car systems will work with ANY device.

So you are being forced to use iOS if you choose CaraPlay. But I bet they all offer other systems from Microsoft and Blackberry and Android along side CarPlay.

So you are more forced to use iOS then forced to use CarPlay, so long as the car has options for other devices and systems from other makes.
I have no idea exactly how it's going to work. I don't know if you're going to be forced to chose or if these models will just support CarPlay for any iPhone with lightening jack. I'm going to assume though that your dash won't become a brick if you don't have an iPhone plugged into the USB port. Maybe the underlying software will be QNX or whatever these manufacturers are currently supporting. And CarPlay is basically just a signal sent to the monitor when an iPhone is plugged in. As far as Microsoft, what cars are running Microsoft OS besides Ford? And weren't there rumors that Ford and Microsoft were parting ways?

And Apple makes its 'cutting edge' feature obsolete by continuing to rely on Lightning instead of releasing AirPlay Direct which is what they were suppose to launch 3 years ago.

Ugh! Full on retard in Cupertino.

Car Hacking

My only concern is that it's been found that cars are remarkably easy to hack. I just hope they begin to isolate systems that deal with driving (headlights/brakes/steering) from the systems that work with mobile integration.

Google started their system several months after 7.0 announced it. So yeah, apple pushed this into reality. Not sure why microsoft never got their sync junk to work well, but I hope this has no such issues.

You believe what ever you want fella, but as I said, Apple is copying everyone else also then with that thinking. And Sync is not 'junk' for me.

But CarPlay doesn't mention iOS. iOS in the car makes it sound like the car will be running iOS.

Yeah it kinda does but it's kinda based off of iOS and to a customer that's not really paying that much attention like most people it will make more sence.

I expect they will offer different head unit options, but you never know they may integrate different systems into one, or most likely you'll have one standard stereo system and button layout, and they will change the software I guess?
And I think I read some others are looking at the Sync system, but also as i said I have it and it works fine. But I have the non touch screen one but it's worked fine for me.

I am surprised that iPhones need to be physically connected via Lightning cables, I thought this would be a wireless solution e.g BlueTooth...

Running nav apps takes a lot of power. The phone needs to be plugged in or it'll discharge quickly.

I got 2014 Range Rover Sport. Doubt Jag/Land rover will ever make carplay work on my model.

Causes ios would have been great in the RRS. jag/land rover are so far behind the electronics time line compared to their competitors.

I think google had self driving car first.

Actually, I was crusing around in a self-driving car years before Google ever started toying with the idea. Not on public roads, of course, but this isn’t new technology, Google’s is just more visible to the average consumer.

Maybe it's a bad business decision on Apple's part, but no one should be surprised that "iOS in the car" is for iOS devices. Google's business model is totally different. As long as you're using Google services they could care less what hardware or OS you're using.

As indicated last week, Apple today announced its CarPlay iOS vehicle integration feature at the Geneva International Motor Show, which allows an iPhone to take over the in-dash display of a car, providing Siri voice controlled access to aspects such as navigation, phone functions, messages, and music.

Once a Lightning-enabled iPhone is connected, the feature can be summoned and controlled on compatible cars through Siri voice control, a touchscreen, and on-board buttons. From there, users are able to access various iOS apps such as Maps, Phone, Messages, Podcasts, and Music. Third party apps such as Beats Radio, iHeartRadio, Spotify, and Stitcher are also supported, with Apple promising compatibility with more apps soon.

CarPlay will be accessible this week with vehicles from manufacturers such as Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo, while other manufacturers such as BMW, Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota will receive the update later.

The feature was originally named iOS in the Car and was revealed last year at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). While Apple executives went on record to say that the functionality was "very important to the company" and is an essential "part of the ecosystem," reports earlier this year stated that CarPlay was plagued by development issues. However, a video of the feature surfaced last month, and showed support for multiple resolutions of external displays, touch input and hardware controls, and voice input.

CarPlay will be available as an update to iOS 7 and works with Lighting-enabled iPhones including the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5.

Android already had this for years in Toyota's and other cars. About time Apple.

Really? but don't you have that twis screen touchscreen tech? And fancy Bowers and Wilkins or Bang and Olufsen stereo options? In what way are they behind, do you not get integration built in?

Volvo Setup

Look at this Volvo setup! Looks so clean. I'm not a Volvo fan but this looks awesome.

1) Do you really need to physically connect the phone? I'm pretty certain they were saying bluetooth before... maybe there were associated lag issues?

2) I wonder if Tesla will ever get CarPlay. I feel like Tesla wants to maintain 100% control of their display (just like Apple would).

3) With the in-dash Apple maps, I really hope Apple buys up a major GPS player. Apple is still new to the maps game and doesn't really have the capability to keep updating the maps constantly.

I don't think that has anything to do with hardware limitation. IMO that is totally a way to make people upgrade. Also, how much longer with those devices get support? 6 months?

exactly.

well i guess it wont actually matter that much for my mom as she is not going to upgrade her car soon-ish.

there must be a big team at apple trying to make up these arbitrary decisions.

I've found mine to be totally fine, but I'm in the UK and have the non touchscreen version, I have read however a lot of American users have had problems?
I am looking forward to getting my system upgraded to the version 2 with App Sync and then I may give the app sync TomTom a go, but I bet TomTom will charge for it haha. But currently in the UK you cannot upgrade the system yourself, a garage has to do it for you.
I do miss controlling the cars aircon and heating via voice though, I could do that with my last Ford using their own system. Was hoping they would update the new Ford Sync one to do this too.

Ford will be dropping SYNC from their cars starting next year. That's the on-going rumor we heard so far. It's most likely accurate.

But this is about CarPlay anyway.
