covid is over. why are they still doing this?
Because they want to, not because they have to. Following last year’s conference, Apple sent out a survey to developers asking if they wanted to return to an in-person conference once it was safe. I’m guessing it got a tepid response; anecdotally, the response I’ve seen from developers to the fully virtual WWDC has been overwhelmingly positive, if with some quibbles here and there.

Happening with me right now in another multiverse:

“I can’t wait to install iOS 16.0 as soon as it is released to the public!”

Right, developers don’t want to even travel a few miles for work anymore. SO, of course they wouldn’t want to travel hundreds or thousands of miles for work.

Monterey and iOS15 still full of bugs and hey, iOS16 and macOS13 already in the queue!!!Hell yeah!!!
(last week universal copy broke after an update with both macOS and iOS / my iPhone refused to connect to my car / brightness settings on iOS freezes - OMG Apple ?).

Still curious what macOS11 would've been like if it was a complete (or as near as can be) Swift-rewrite of MacOS. Considering the push to Swift, I'm surprised Apple hasn't done more.

Can't believe I'm old enough to remember in-person WWDCs selling out in days… the hours… then minutes… then seconds… then going to a lottery system.

For the last decade+, I've gone to the National Education Association's annual business meeting. Due to COVID, it's been virtual the last 2 years. Considering there are usually 8,000+ delegates & guests, the NEA saved millions in costs (convention center rental, hotels, bussing between the convention center & hotels, food, etc.). Doing the actual business (debating & voting on business items), it was difficult to do virtually. I'm sure Apple saves a bit of money doing it virtually.

It was expected but some people somehow thought this was going to be in person lol.

Personally I think their online offering is WAY superior to what they had before. The sessions are way more polished. I'll be sad when they go back to in person WWDC

… plus the fact that the Digital WWDC events are:
•free, not $1600+ hotels, travel expenses, food
• unlimited worldwide attendance, instead of being capped around 5000 attendees who can travel to or live in the US

Plus, for Apple, they can get as many of their people to participate virtually, instead of trying to stuff A certain amount of them into a convention center.
For both Apple and the developers, who this entire event is for, there are way more benefits to the digital events than there are drawbacks.

We also need a battery percentage indicator to come back on an iPhone desperately. Getting old and tired of swiping the screen down just to check on the battery indicator. ??
Apple's fixing that with the next iPhone, on the models without the notch.

Pretty expesnive fix. ;)

So, what’re the odds that they’ll add support for Vulkan and stop deprecating OpenGL?
