I for one welcome our new Video Editing overlords.

My jaw dropped when I read that the price for the whole package, which used to be $1000, is now $400. I hope Apple continues to support the professional editor, but the release today is not aimed at the pro who is perfectly satisfied with 7 (and, apparently, can keep it running for years if he or she wants). This is aimed at the large and growing market of amateur and hobbyist editors who want something more powerful than iMovie to edit their videos.

Tell that to late Anthony Minghella and Walter Munch who cut Cold Mountain on Final Cut Pro 3, for which even Apple said "Don't! It's not ready for a project like that".

An App can be missing a lot of features, but still can be the choice of people like Munch who received an Academy award nomination for his editing on Cold Mountain.

I hope Final Cut continues to be used by true professionals, if for no other reason than lowly amateurs like me enjoy knowing that we are using Pro-quality stuff. I just observe that the Pros here are cautious at best, while hobbyists and part-timers are jumping onto the bandwagon in a big way. Apple could easily continue to sell it's pro-level Studio for $1000 and the Pros would buy it (once its ready). This price point suggests that they are looking for a bigger market as well.

What Apple is doing is that they are doing the switch to FCP X through a transition. They are releasing the app today, and they'll add features in short time to make the Pro's who use FCS 7 happy.

The price point is about digital distribution and also about separating the apps in the studio.

The Pro's should be careful, obviously, and not do the switch today, because their workflow will get interrupted and some won't be able to do anything due to missing features.

I just installed it on my MBP, how do I get it on my MP that is not online?
Can I just copy it over or do I have to download it?

Of course it can. There are exceptions to every rule. A good story teller/editor could use iMovie or less and create a fantastic film. Also doesn't mean they prefer it...

I am not condemning the software at all. I was merely "surprised" how you were so quick to argue that it was professional when professionals were telling you that in its current state - it's not - and relying on one man's opinion as the basis for your argument.

As you said, however - this is day 0. The real opinions/evaluation will happen within the next 2-4 months as people use it for their projects....

So buy it in August? Your current card isn't supported. I would be glad to be getting this info before purchasing.

You just don't get it. My point is Who is Apple to tell me I can't buy something. I have my reasons for needing to purchasing it now. What if you wanted to buy a shirt and the sales person refused to sell it to you because they thought it wasn't right for you. I'm pretty sure you'd be speaking to a manager

Well since you can't get Lion without having Snow Leopard, you can't get FCP X without first buying SL even after Lion is released, that is unless you buy a new mac then.

I wish I didn't have to convert mpg clips offline just to get it into FCP X. Seems like it should just injest it, and convert to ProRes in the background, or at least let me import it to begin with.

As I just realized the graphic card in my MP is not supported, could someone point me to a reasonable card I could buy?

Looks like I am left with no upgrade as a FCE user. No problem. I will continue to use what I have along with Adobe PE until I need to upgrade in the future.

BTW, never thought I would fully embrace tapeless but I have.

Quick question: if I install FCP X is it going to wipe over my existing FCS installation? or can FCP X live in peace w/ older versions of FCS?

perhaps this comment wasn't for me? I'm running snow Leopard.

My issue is Apple refusing to sell me Compressor and FCX even thought I know my current machine is not compatible. If I purchase it now I get 100% reimbursed by my company. If I wait till august when I buy a new mac the cost is 100% on me

Well, I will say this app has its strong points...but it was a horrible mistake wasting money on it when it first came out. It literally has a long way to go to be useful to me.

I hate avid, used to hate premiere; but with the new premiere...it's simply a long ways ahead of FCPX right now. Hopefully time will bring this app up to par, but I have a feeling my company is not going to adopt FCPX. I want to say, really Apple? I feel like they are using their marketing strategies for FCP now...like the ipod touch. Release it with basic features, and make you pay more later on for something that has everything you want. Except in this case, for a professional production company, it's a need.

Overall, for prosumers/consumers it looks awesome....for anyone who knows every detail of Final Cut/Avid/and Premiere....this is a huge disappointment.

Just started using FCP X on my 2010 iMac, and all I can say is 'wow'. For a pro app, this is amazingly user friendly and highlights that a new version of Logic Studio shouldn't be far away. If it feels anything like this, i'll be a very happy chap!

I can't get over how quick it is either. Loads up in just under 3-seconds, as opposed to iMovie takes more than twice as long. The interface is so inviting and everything is laid out clearly with help text. Magnetic timeline is a lifesaver!

As far as i'm concerned, the Final Cut of 3 hours ago is as dead as the Do-Do :D Thank you Apple!

When I tried to export to compressor, I didn´t get the opportunity to choose my local cluster even if it says it´s up and running in Sysprefs.
Has anyone tried this yet?

At least it didn´t crash as it used to, but then before I could chose my cluster instead of just "This computer"

I'm glad I hardly touched FCP7, because this version is another world for me compared to CS5. Is it normal to trim a clip in the clips window / bin? I can't scrub, trim or set in/out points in the preview window, like I do in Premiere.

Just another note, the new 'Share' menu (akin to iMovie) has advanced Export to Blu-ray features. You can either export to disc (choose you drive) or to Hard Drive. You can also create a menu within the same window if you wish, very nice!

true, but the difference between a pro and an amateur like you and I, isn't the software, it's the actual editing knowledge - when to edit, how to edit a scene with effects, emotion etc..etc.. these are just the tools

i'm sure it will speed up the process for some editors and some will adjust.

for me, I'm busy right now so I can't take the time to upgrade which is both driving me nuts b/c i'm excited to see it yet I can wait for more reviews and comprehensive videos so I can figure out some key points - how compressor really works it's supposed distributed computing knowledge and if the quality is great etc...

fingers crossed :)
