yea, don't really want to be handing my phone over to the cops....

i'll keep my physical ID
did you read the article? also why is this not common sense? you don't hand over your phone to use apple pay.
Upon tapping their iPhone or Apple Watch on an identity reader, customers will see a prompt on their device displaying the specific information being requested by the TSA. Only after authorizing with Face ID or Touch ID is the requested identity information released from their device, according to Apple. Users do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device to a TSA security officer to present their ID, the company added.

Apple said its mobile ID implementation supports the ISO 18013-5 standard, which sets clear privacy guidelines for presenting an ID through a mobile device.

We have digital licenses in NSW, Australia but that’s stored in a standalone app and not in wallet. Does the US have that already?

I haven’t really needed to take my physical wallet with me now for about 2 years. I keep saying the physical wallet will be obsolete soon lol

AZ, surprising, they're not one for innovation. looking forward to this everywhere. would be nice with passports too, but well see how it plays out

hopefully it won't be limited to just TSA and can go completely digital. the magnetic wallet is nice but limiting
It’s surprising, but AZ actually has some pretty decent tech for accessing state services, at least relative to PA, the only other state, erm “commonwealth” I’ve had personal experience using. AZ actually already has Mobile ID’s via app, though knowledge and adoption remain low.

I fly all the time and never once has I had to hand over my phone. You scan it yourself on customer facing readers.
Same, I’ve seen TSA agents refuse to even touch phones when passengers who aren’t familiar presume they have to and begin handing them over. I don’t think they want anything to do with peoples phones, it may even be policy not to touch them. Airline employees seem to be the same way.

We have it in Poland for quite a long time. It has a form of an app which is secured by so called trusted profile. It contains ID, driving license, car registration and insurance, EU COVID vaccination certificate, etc. It is available for iOS and Android. You can bind it to biometric functions of your device. I get my medical prescriptions directly to this app.

Until digital license is universally adopted
I’ll keep my physical license on me. There will always be an occasion where you have to hand your iPhone to somebody to see your license… No thAnks
Do I really want to give up all my info where it can be hacked even though it’s encrypted
We’ve alreDy seen this happen in other companies
Better safe than sorry

Apple today announced the first U.S. states that will be rolling out the ability for residents to add their driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch. Arizona and Georgia will be the first states to support the feature, with Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah to follow, according to Apple.

Apple said select TSA security checkpoints in participating U.S. airports will be the first locations where customers can present their mobile driver's license or state ID in the Wallet app. Participating states and the TSA will share more information at a later date in regards to when and where mobile driver's licenses and IDs will be supported.

Apple is already in discussions with many more U.S. states as part of its plan to offer the feature nationwide in the future, according to Jennifer Bailey, Apple's vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, but no timeframe was provided.

The ability to add a driver's license or ID to the Wallet app is a feature of iOS 15, which will be publicly released later this year. Once a participating state begins offering this capability, customers will be able to tap the plus sign at the top of the Wallet app to begin adding their license or ID, and then simply tap their iPhone or Apple Watch on an identity reader at a TSA checkpoint, without taking out their physical card.

Apple said the feature is designed with privacy and security in mind. When adding a driver's license or state ID card to the Wallet app, customers will be required to take a photo of their face, which will be securely provided to the issuing state for verification. As an additional measure, Apple said users will be prompted to complete a series of facial and head movements during the setup process.

This feature will expand upon the Wallet app's existing support for student IDs at select universities and colleges in the U.S. and Canada.

MY EXACT WORDS! GA is usually never at the forefront of these things. Excited.

Taken another way, the most technologically backwards states are first to adopt, whereas more technologicallv savvy states are holding back. Maybe they have something there.

Heck no. So if I need to show a police officer by DL I have to give them my phone. THen they take the phone to their patrol car which could contain equipment to copy data off my phone. Then we will have lawsuits around all of this.

Maybe I need more coffee, but I wouldn’t give this to the police, and I suspect most business won’t accept it for quite some time.

Yup - if you're comfortable handing your unlocked phone to a cop who then takes it out of your control, then you do you.

Me, I'll stay with physical ID.

Here officer...my ID is on here, along with everything else important in my life, contact info for all my friends and family, a record of everywhere I've been and everything I've done. Please, just look at the license.

I recall hearing reports from states where this has already been implemented (but via a state app, not Apple Wallet, IIRC), that officers were specifically forbidden from touching the phone - you'd bring up the ID, hold it up, and they'd read it without touching it - unclear whether that was via a handheld scanner, QR code, or just reading the numbers off the screen.

MVD stuff is usually pretty forward moving; Arizona was also the first state to start accepting voter registrations online through MVD websites

The digital ID Arizona currently has no Apple Wallet support and clearly states that you must carry your physical drivers license with you as the digital ID isn't accepted in all situations in the state so I haven't jumped onboard yet.. Hopefully iOS 15 will add Apple Wallet support and will be accepted all over the state in any circumstance or I'll just keep using my physical license...

I have difficulty understanding the point of this. If you have to physically show your id to an officer, how is this more convenient than a physical id?

You don’t have to carry your physical ID. Now all your credit cards, transit passes, IDs, car keys, etc. are in your iPhone. No more wallet.

Here we go again...

One step at a time, I know. However, I would like that the digital license would include ‘endorsements’ like gaming and concealed carry.
Those would more than likely should be, separate licenses in the wallet app. However, it isn't unheard of, Minnesota licenses state if you're eligible for reduced fare transit or not, as an endorsement.

Maybe as a backup but if you drop a plastic card you're not out $1K+. Feel the same about payments.

Did you read the press release or any of the multiple posts regarding what you are speaking of? This is not a physical ID like an insurance card you may have a photo of on your phone. This only works with a reader, which can only be used by TSA at this time. If you give your phone to one of us millions of rogue cops, that’s on you. 🙄
Either:
1. It shows no data on screen and is a security issue because there is no way to verify that the data being pulled matches the person holding the phone, or
2. It does have data on the phone and is a security issue because some cop will take it.

Then they have no way to read your ID. There is nothing presented on the screen. They need a reader. If they take your locked phone to a reader in their car they have to bring the locked phone back which the phone will tell you what data is requested and you have to confirm with bio-metrics.

This is years away from replacing being able to not carry a physical ID. You do realize this right?

You all realize this is just a baby step. I can finally go through the airport (Like any of us are traveling right now) and not have my ID and phone in my hand walking through security. I can just scan my watch and be done with it.
Great. So there is absolutely no way to verify that the person holding the phone is the data being scanned. The database will be compromised and while the photo might match the rest of the information won't.
