So I'm a Peloton guy - love it - and an Apple guy. I think some of you are comparing apples to oranges. The Peloton digital app is $12.99 per month, not $39. The $39 app is when you have the bike or the tread. That $39 also gets you all of the metrics that tie in to both pieces of hardware and it covers your family. So Fitness+ is more like the Digital version of Peloton.
A lot in my mind will depend on the instructors. The Peloton instructors have basically built a following and become rock stars in their areas - that's what keeps people coming back, plus the huge variety of LIVE and on demand classes and the whole competition between members. I'm not saying Apple can't do it, but they have a ways to catch up. I see them competing more with Nike and other fitness apps at first.
I also think this space has huge potential - even when gyms are open, I'm not comfortable going back and sweating and breathing hard with a bunch of other people and probably won't be for a while. It's also been incredibly great to work out at home and not have to go somewhere or plan as much around it. I've ridden every single day now for almost 5 months, lost 20lbs, my resting heartrate has dropped - it's all been good.

And I’m sure you’d argue that Peloton is the best invention ever because of your consumer bias. Works both ways. 😏
Yes. Best exercise invention for me. I need to gamify my exercise and make it addicting or else I don't have the willpower to stick with it.

I've lost 20 pounds since starting Peloton Power Zones and have improved my muscles/toned my body. I'm not dropping Peloton for Fitness+ but it's silly to make the elitist argument you are presenting. I'm sure you would make that argument due to your career and bias though.
Is that 20 pounds of body fat or 20 pounds of body fat and muscle? Simply saying you “lost weight” doesn’t say much in terms of recomposition.

20 pounds of body fat. I've gained muscle and toned muscle too. My arms and legs no longer have fat hanging off them. It's toned body parts. I never in my life thought I could achieve this. I have hired personal trainers in the past and gone to gyms, but the expense and effort caused my laziness to kick in. Peloton was that magic spark that changed my life.

Hence why people hire trainers. Look, I’m not saying everyone needs one. But my point about discipline and motivation still stands.

What drives me crazy are the frivolous subscription services that people subscribe to and give up on because of the lack of willpower and then they eventually seek out professional advice. Those services are not personalized to the individual (some respond better to cardio, high vs low carb diets, etc. than others).

We exist for a reason and my standpoint is not elitist. I know when I’m needed and when I’m not. By the way, the “I’m a know it all and too good for a trainer” mentality is a thing also. Along with the lack of humility to accept help from one. I’m not accusing you of this, but I did want to mention it.

Nice! Keep it up. I’m not trying to take that success away from you.

I believe this will turn out to be Apple's most used service after Music. This should be a huge hit.

“Membership fees vary widely based on your location and gym of preference, but the industry-wide average falls in at $58 per month, or $696 per year”

Can you provide a link to a 10 dollar gym membership? Have you ever been in a gym? :)

Planet Fitness is an affordable gym chain, if you live near a location. It charges similar to that price or at least it used to before the CoV crisis. For ~$20/month, you can use any other Planet Fitness location in the U.S. whereas the basic fee limits you to that particular location.
Main thing bad about it is that you need to link a bank account, instead of a credit card, for automatic monthly payments.

$10/month is what a gym membership costs.

For $10/month I can do push ups in my neighbor’s garage. $25/month gets me a semi-well equipped gym with usually working machines that gets cleaned one a week whether it needs it or not. $40/gets me a clean well maintained space available 24/7. It’s too small but I suffer. $10 is a deal.

I’m in a Charlotte suburb.

The human element cannot be replaced by a computer.

The difference with the rings is they hold you accountable. You can directly see if you’re meeting your goal and measure it over time. A pre-recorded class cannot do that.
Some people are self starters and some just need a nudge. And some require human trainers but right now it’s cost prohibitive or just unsafe for many. Rings do not hold many anymore accountable than a prerecorded video of a trainer. These videos are just unlocking an entirely new market of users.

Does it replace a personal trainer? No
Does it replace in-person group classes? Not completely, or not at all.
Does those two things make it useless? No

I understand what personal trainers posting here are saying, but in a lot of places, personal trainers are a luxury that a lot of people can't afford. Included in an Apple One subscription, with the cost possibly broken down between multiple users, it becomes very affordable. I also know people who aren't comfortable enough in their own skin to sign up for group classes... A good class should create an atmosphere that alleviates that apprehension, but maybe starting with something like Fitness+ will get them to that point where they are comfortable enough.

People shouldn't expect the same results as with in-person classes or personal trainers, but if it gets people started, it's all good. Then if they become more serious about fitness or hit a plateau and want to go above, maybe they'll seek more personalized training options.

As mentioned previously, nutrition is a huge part of fitness that isn't covered by this... I don't know how they could do it, but hopefully that's something Apple is thinking about for the future of Fitness+ (once again, can't compete with personalized services, but it could be beneficial)

I agree. The price wouldn't be an issue for me. But like you...I'm a swimmer. My wife is into yoga though, so this will probably appeal to her.

However, the one aspect that makes it a little appealing to me is that swimming season is basically coming to an end. We're getting to the point in the year where it's not quite warm enough to use my pool, and once Illinois winter sets in, it's a definite no go 😂 The indoor pool at my gym is open, but at the time of day I would be able to go (after work), it will be at capacity per COVID guidelines. Fitness+ might just give me something to do this winter aside from jogging.
Man, I'm glad to live in SoCal. The pool and ocean (when not too cold) are always open! :)
I get what you are saying. The Covid has a restriction on my pool, but it's not so bad.

Haha I grew up in the Bay Area. Every once in a while, I miss those East Bay winters 😂 But while not as cold as Illinois, it still wouldn’t be warm enough 😂 SoCal definitely beats NorCal when it comes to ocean temps!

Here's a question: This service will likely launch the day of Thanksgiving (need to work off that giant dinner, right?). They mentioned those who buy a new Apple Watch get three months free.

I just ordered a new Apple Watch S6. Will I still get my free three months of Fitness+?
Yes, you’re eligible...

And even if you take group classes, in-between classes, I wouldn’t be against some form of organized training, so even then, Fitness+ might be a good supplement. We’ll have to see when it comes out.

I'll be keeping my personal trainer and pilates and do this as supplementary (just as I've been doing ring fit). We'll be paying for the Premier AppleOne bundle anyway, so this is just gravy. The real time on screen stats is the real innovation here.

Trainers can also be “frivolous subscription services” too. Except they are even more expensive. They work for some but you cannot guarantee results anymore then Peloton or Apple can. There is a human connection and expert feedback that can be a powerful motivator but in the end, I believe the big expense of a trainer is the real motivator for most customers. Whatever works.

This is very true. I've paid for a personal trainer for five years. Not because I can't do anything he tells me to do, but because he tells me to do it.

I'm not sure about you guys, but I'm really excited for this service. Working out from my bedroom on something like a yoga mat with a simple set of weights versus going to the gym, having to wait for the equipment and pay through my teeth for a (at least where I live, 99% personal trainer who is on drugs) etc. seems a much better option. Especially with 2020 and staying in being a better idea and also with the winter coming in general, when it's too dark after work to get out and going out in the cold could risk a bad cold!

Plus, integration with my watch which makes it easier to track progress!

Does this support multiple people at once? My wife and I like to workout at home together.

That was my first idea as well. I get that the whole family can use it, but I want to know if both the misses and me can have our rings on the tv during a workout together.

I'm bummed it's not available in Belgium though, I don't really care it's only available in English...

I was wondering the same thing. Family share would be that we could each have our own profile, but I'm interested in working out at the same time.

I wish gym membership were so cheap. But yeah, $10 is too pricey.
There is the top tier bundle though, many people will get Fitness+ that way. I think this is the reason why they announced Apple One yesterday, they finally have enough services to entice people into signing for a bundle.
If I could get the bundle (no News+ here so I can't have it) I'd use Fitness+ for sure. Gyms are open now, but only with a small amount of attendees so it is really difficult to go there unless you chose the right time of day.

I would really like to try this out as part of the Apple one subscription, WITHOUT having an Apple Watch first to see if it is worth buying one. It doesn’t sound like that is possible however.
