Almost as heavy. Still no real GPS. Same price is doing me a "favor" with all the competition offering thinner, lighter, cheaper, more open OS? I know we all hate flash, but the reality is 25% of the top 100 pages on the net still use it, so we can either have access to it or not have access, they go with #2 to try and make a statement. Comparing your year-old platform to one that hasn't even been released yet? Wow, Apple w\o Jobs is really tanking quick. This is like the 80s where Apple had everything going for it then just gave it all up to be satisfied with 10% forever. It's all just a mess, this is Android's year.

Queue the flamer responses. It's hard to see Apple fall short this year. I was really hoping they'd wow us with something to give all the new Android tablets a run for the money.

I'm not buying, more for the rest of you.

Typical troll. Unfounded/incorrect info. The xoom is MORE than the iPad for the same memory model. Apple is NOT w/o Jobs - product development is on a multi-year schedule - anything coming to market now was fully overseen by Jobs. Your statistic basically blows your argument away when u admit that 75% of the top 100 pages DON'T USE FLASH AT ALL (and who knows if that stat is even true.) And finally, trying to denigrate Apple's "year-old" platform obviously comes off looking ridiculous: the iPad has blown away records for a new consumer product. It created and defined a category. And that "year-old" platform still was outselling the flimsy competition by several orders of magnitude. This update will only serve to further distance it from the competition.

You may be an Android fanboy, but no matter how hard you wish for the iPad to be less successful, it just won't happen. I'm LOLing at you :D

I don't know why anyone would choose a Xoom over an iPad2? It's like buying a Zune instead of an iPod...basically a big waste of money. If you want power and flexibility then stick with a PC/Mac. If you want simplicity, portability, fun, and ease-of-use then get an iPad.

Agreed.

Xoom or whatever else is for haters. They need to have an iPad, but they can't stomach it because they hate Apple so much - for whatever reason.

They can do this and it doesn't really matter much in the grand scheme of life, but after a while it gets really hard for them to justify their "Zune" purchase a few years later.

Check into any of those people whom, a few years ago were like "this iPod is restrictive and blah blah blah, BUT I'm VERY interested to buy the new Zune! It's the FUTURE!". I'm very sure it would be very difficult to find a hater out there who still uses a "Zune" in 2011. Even the hater realizes when they were dead wrong about something. After a few Zune's, Xooms, Galaxies and whatever else, they usually change their attitude and buy a Macbook Pro, but they never run OSX on it - just Windows with bootcamp or whatever. That's what my friend does, and he is funny. He agrees the Macbook Pro is a good machine, but he never runs OS X on it - so his hater pride is still preserved somewhat. Funny stuff.

scary really

what an abysmal presentation day for apple. you really get the sense that they don't know what to do now. it's still been years since they brought anything new to the table. blew everyone away with the iphone. then the ipad, which turned out to be the same OS just a larger screen, no real innovation there. then android not only catches up, but starts SMOKING apple in sales. now this, the ipad 2. a cpu upgrade most people won't notice, same screen, still no usb, camera woohoo, and the same 256mb of ram the ipad 1 has. the xoom as 4gb of ram wtf apple. this isn't really an upgrade honestly. i mean if your life is incomplete without a camera on your ipad ok, but for them to behave as if they're in the lead of anything. well RIM did that too, and they're still doing it, all the while losing 40& marketshare in 12 months.

apple is fooling only themselves at this point, i can't believe this ipad2 is real.

Any update on how much ram is in the iPad 2?

Not quite enough. If you use too much of that RAM it will cause you huge problems. So better hold on for a while until you are sure it has the right amount. lol :D

The camera though - it has Jillions and jillions of pixels, which is good because that's how many I need. Any less and I would definitely wait for iPad 3, or maybe iPad 4. :)

Well, maybe they should copy the Android tablet devices. Ditch iTunes, make all these "flexible" OS's and allow these cheapo makers in China to take a crack at it eh?

Lol again.

MacRumors "Newbie" - what are you some kind of paid shill from Steve Balmers basement?

Something every potential iPad 2 buyer needs to think about is how the first iPad was treated.

Is Apple going to pull the same BS regarding the iOS 5.0 update that they pulled with the iPad iOS 4 update? Meaning, will iPad 2 get it the same time as the other devices or will they have to wait an additional 5 freakin months for it?

Do you really need that explained to you?

You really don't know why they took 5 more months to provide that update for the ORIGINAL iPad?

It has been discussed and gone over quite a lot really, so I think a little research on your part would enlighten you.

Suffice it to say you concerns are invalid once you learn why it happened previously, and why it won't happen again.

actually there are multiple firms with numbers showing that android is already putting a huge dent in ipad sales, and most of them now expect android tablets to completely surpass ipad soon. i'm not trolling, it's simply fact. there is no real update going on here that is going to make people line up to buy the new ipad. on the other side tho you have a multitude of tablets coming out, and the xoom, while more expensive is quite a bit more for the money than the ipad. hell you even get a customized OS just for tablets, not a blown up version like the ipad got.

I'm surprised by the large number of iPad variants: 3 capacities (16/32/64 GB), 3 versions (WiFi, GSM, CDMA), 2 colors. Total of 18 different iPads. This seems very much unlike Apple. I think this might create inventory problems they haven't faced before and may increase their costs accordingly.

While the iPad 2 isn't everything I hoped for, I'll still buy one. But since its not everything I hoped for, I won't buy a fully decked-out model. Probably I'll just get a 32 GB WiFi iPad 2. That will give me good service until the iPad 3.

(I would not buy now if I already owned an iPad 1.)

With that said, right now I think that software and integration are key differentiators instead of hardware at this point. I'm glad to see Apple stream iTunes library over Wifi...that helps to negate the need for a ton of space on the device. Next they need to leverage the power of MobileMe to stream from anywhere. Also they need to continue to merge AppleTV and the iPad...Airplay is really cool; I use it a lot more than I thought I would. Why can't you jet share your whole screen via Airplay?!?!? Come-on Apple, throw us a bone here. Why use a HDMI cable to share the screen when you could just do it wirelessly to your AppleTV. Besides, the stinking HDMI connector is like $40...you can get a refurb AppleTV for $85!

Xoom and others are just sad copycats. The real innovation is being done by Apple and as a result the copycats are always going to be a step behind. By the time other real tablets hit the market and actually start to become useful the iPad3 will be coming out making them all look foolish again.

Lastly, let me say that I don't get why people like Android devices. The devices look cheap to me and the interface is clunky. Aside from that it's overly complicated. It seems to me to have borrowed their philosophy from Windows. People that want "something that does everything" will go for Android devices and people that "want devices that just work" will go for Apple.

you realize that the xoom is running a customized version of android specifically made for tablets right? what makes it a sad copycat? theres nothing it's doing that's imitating ios, in fact it's apple who is introducing features in honeycomb into ios. i love apple as much as anyone but these sort of comments have to stop. you can't just automatically assume everything apple does is original and they're always ahead of the game, mostly because right now they're not. they're clearly at a crossroads as to what to do. this new ipad only has 256mb of ram and the same old OS.

After today's presentation, I'm happily sticking with the original iPad. The new stuff on the iPad 2 is nice, but there is nothing there that is screaming "OH MY GOD YOU HAVE TO GET THIS NOW!!!". I think the original will get me through another year just fine and then consider getting the inevitable iPad 3.

If anything would have put me over the top to get the iPad 2 it would have been the retina display.... here's to hoping it's in 3.

Then again, this might be me telling myself all this because I'm really wanting a MacBook Air. :\

It was the same way with the original iPad except there's one additional color this time.

haha

MacRumors "Newbie" - what are you some kind of paid shill from Steve Balmers basement?

i like that all i did was state a fact and you suddenly turn to insults, copy and pasting my readily available information like you dug it up. in case you didn't know all of apple products are made in china, in factories with children in them. so i don't even know what you're really aiming at there. if android were such a joke it wouldn't be blowing ios away in sales right now, which it is.

You have a point there I guess.

Android devices are selling a significant amount.

Look back to the history of Windows. I would argue that Mac OS was better than Windows from the 1980's to now, but just because something is better doesn't mean more people will use it. Sometimes the majority chooses the wrong thing. 10 times more Windows machines than Mac OS machines.

Maybe the Tsunami wave of Android devices will take the biggest share of the market in 5 years? I personally doubt this, but I could be wrong, I wouldn't be giving any big odds on that wager.

My gut feeling is that the analysts, the TV news people, and most citizens can't get any perspective on the significance of what Apple has done. The idiocy I see on CNBC when they cover Apple - it's just so wrong - the analysts are just so out of touch - even the new younger analysts they feature are either paid shills, or just plain "tools".

I mean check this out on CNBC - today some dorky analyst was preaching that we should wait for the iPad 3, because it doesn't have 4G wireless. His prediction is that a 4G version of the iPad will come out in September. Mr Smarty pants gets this negative "don't buy" message out on CNBC for all the overweight suits out there who really have no clue. It was all over the ticker screen "SHOULD YOU WAIT FOR iPAD 3?" on the CNBC TV screen. Those overweight suits have Billions of dollars of influence, and they are so lazy they won't even question what they see on TV - they just assume it's true.

With negative propaganda on the financial news TV scene like that "Should you wait for iPad 3?", it's hard to say if it will affect things in an illogical way.

I have my life savings in AAPL, and this is why I am putting out my own Propaganda. To counter all the paid off shill haters. I want the Sheiks and Warren Buffet to read through here and get my side of the "Truth" in a way that counts so they drive AAPL over $400 sooner rather than later.

RAM question

" I can't seem to find the specs for memory, and I didn't catch it announced in the presentation. Am I missing it, or is it conveniently not being mentioned this time around? Surely it was boosted from 256 MB"

I would think it would need at least 512 MB of RAM With the addition of an iMovie app. (they said iPad I with 256 mb RAM won't support the IMovie app) Curious how heat dissipation is handled when working on video editing with faster processor and GPU. I cant imagine they added a fan.
Hmmmmm

everything in this world is not perfect.. be thankful what apple is offering. tell me a company that has a good customer service, a roadmap for OS/iOS, build quality, exclusivity, etc..

life is too short, and technology is damn fast. so please if you don't like it don't ****ing buy it. or another consideration of apple is there is no restocking fee.. if you don't like it return it. at least you just experienced the product what they are offering.

I know all products are made in China of course. I was referring to the independent wildcat China makers. They would be totally lost without Android as far as approaching something even closely imitating the iPad or iPhone.

Probably for a million bucks you too can make an iPad clone right now. Easy to find a maker on Alibaba who will do it for you.

I don't really mean to insult. But I do want to disrupt the "wha wha wha" complaining attitudes. To me it's more about the money and my personal tech hobby interest. I read the arguments against Apple and I bet against them. So far so good!

And my apologies if I come across as being rude. I had a few merlots for supper and I'm typing like a nut tonight! I am venting on all you readers of the forum! Oh well! Hope I don't come across as being as much of an idiot as some of you folks do to me!

Like I said - I think it's true - Android could threaten to take majority market share. Maybe. But like I say - I don't really think this is going down so well. I have an ear out there to see how Android is doing and I see them make a ton of mistakes - or at least 2 or 3 fatal mistakes. I won't even post them for fear of them (Android guys) actually learning and doing something about it. But I have faith in their own shortsightedness.

This makes me worried that I will not be able to get a worldphone iphone 5. This means I'm probably buying an andriod. At a premium of $130, I'm afraid I do not understand why Apple is keeping two separate models. That to me is the biggest disappointment.

Yeah I seriously hope the iPhone 5 is a hybrid GSM/CDMA phone. That'd be nice. The hardware certainly supports it.

I am not surprised that many people were once gullible enough to believe that Apple would put a "Retina Display" inside the iPad 2. :D

after thinking about this more, i think the ipad 2 looks awesome. i'm stoked to get it and start getting all the apps specifically for the ipad. more specifically, i'm looking into making some music with those apps.

but really, this update was less than what i was hoping for. i don't think they emphasized how much faster it was enough. is it me, or were they promoting the hell out of that smart cover for it? that seemed a little overdone the more i think about it.

but what i get out of it at this point is that ipad 2 will be able to take video, facetime and photobooth. oh, and it's a hair lighter and a third thinner. nothing screams innovation here, which is something i expect from apple. look at the macbook air — awesome. OS X Lion looks pretty incredible, a great new UI, and a direction i am interested in — with iOS and OS X merging nicely together.

but really, ipad 2 doesnt really do anything that ipad 1 can't do, save take photo/video etc. i guess we'll have to wait and see what iOS 5 has in store for us, but really this is kinda the way i see it at this point:

iPad 1: intro, it's a mix between your smartphone and your laptop; big ipod touch.
ipad 2: it's lighter, thinner, a bit faster and has cameras.
ipad 3: it's retina display and it's a tad faster still
ipad 4: smart bezels? tad faster?
ipad 5: who knows.

i was just hoping for more than a basic update to what the ipad is, but i guess apple is extremely happy with the way that's been to really add any cool features to the ipad. either way, i'm still going to buy one, i was just hoping for something to really blow me away.

like someone else said above, i wish apple would stop making the ipad/ipod touch sort of second-class citizens to the iphone. i know it's their flagship, but when i bought the ipod touch 4 and found out how much crappier the camera was and that the retina display wasn't as great as the iphone's retina, i just thought it felt like a cheaper product to me at that point and i was a bit bummed. i'm sure once the next iphone comes out it'll make the ipad owners feel a bit left behind with how much better it is when in my eyes, the ipad should be getting the most power because of what it's used for and how much bigger it is.

this puzzles me, apple.

I believe the white iPad2 will fly off the shelves! I'm giving the iPad to my mother and buy the iPad2 for myself. Is that wrong?:(

You need to read a good book on diversification. Maybe "Fortune's Formula".

I heard about diversification decades ago as a buzzword. I hate diversification.

I really like Cramer on CNBC - he is very very smart, but the one part of his show I don't agree with is the "Am I Diversified" portion of the show.

Why would you want to be diversified when you have a winner that continues to fight the prejudice against it and continues to rub their enemies noses in it successfully like Apple does.

The suits have been dead wrong about AAPL for decades and I have made so much money off of this that it's pointless to even go to work.

If the market crashes, being diversified doesn't help you does it?

I'll admit, when Apple dropped to $78.00 in 2008 I was really scared, but I was still way up even at that point!

I have real estate, gold and AAPL. that's how diversified I am. Not very. The rest of my stocks are listed somewhere else in the forums here - many of them are losers. (they are all tech by the way, so even worse for "diversification" for me). 95% of my stock portfolio is in AAPL and AAPL covered calls - earning me a good stipend in lieu of dividend.

I could have bought Potash stocks, but what do I know about Potash really? How about banks? They are just a scam. I do know Apple products because I am a super consumer and have been into Apple since the II in 1979. So the Peter Lynch philosophy of buy what you know is what I do.

I have Apple because I am a true believer, and I say Phooey to diversification. Every time I make an experiment to diversify into something like biomedical or Far East funds, the result pales in comparison to my returns on AAPL, and I see no reason for things to change negatively for AAPL. The world is full of sheep and Apple is the shepherd. There isn't an ounce of innovation at the copycat iPad clone companies. The only guy I respect out there for being honest was that Nokia CEO who had the balls to admit he was clueless and made a mistake - that guy is solid. But the rest of them are squirming and should go back under their rocks they came from.
