It's a nice device.

From an industrial design perspective it is really quite a marvel, that thin, more processing power, yet the same battery life. Amazing! I think that it's enough to make all the competitors seem "last generation" by comparison.

However I believe that a device in this class should be able to stand on it's own and not be reliant on a "real computer". I was hoping that this release would signal a move in that direction. It's time for this bird to leave the nest.

Also ports are fast becoming an Achilles heel. I get that Steve and Johnny don't want ugly holes in their design, however Apples solution is leading to dongle hell. You need an adapter for a camera, another one for VGA out, another one for hdmi, not to mention the obligatory 30 pin to usb cable. What next? A bag full of dongles is hardly an elegant (or cheap!) solution, and it undermines the portability concept.

On the Mac side I already have a mini display port to dvi adapter, a mdp to hdmi adapter and a mdp to VGA adapter.

Enough already!

Well, I'm pretty excited, having not owned an iPad previously. It's just considering what to do next which is the dilemma - I think I may sell my iPhone 4 to subsidise this, but it gets trickier when deciding whether to opt for a Wi-Fi or 3G model. I spend way too much time ****ing about online on my daily commute so it might do me some good to lose that ability, but I'd probably miss to some extent....

Also, Garage Band looks great! A nice 'sketchpad' for music on the move.

what an abysmal presentation day for apple. you really get the sense that they don't know what to do now. it's still been years since they brought anything new to the table. blew everyone away with the iphone. then the ipad, which turned out to be the same OS just a larger screen, no real innovation there. then android not only catches up, but starts SMOKING apple in sales.

so where is the android innovation? I dont see any significant advances from the android camp, only cloning IOS is hardly innovative
and smoking apple in sales? please tell me which individual android phone is selling more than the iphone 4? NONE.
Do not lump all android models. android is not a company nor is it innovative, it's just a clone of the iphone.

if you want to see innovation look for WebOS, QNX and IOS, not at android.

It's still a big iPod Touch (kind of more now, with the cameras and new body), but nothings wrong with that.

Yeah, which is why I'm really looking forward to the next iPod Touch update! :D I bet they're gonna release a white one too. mayble lower it's price? a better camera probably, that's what I'm hoping for.

I'll take a pocket sized iPad over a large one, but I do see the appeal now in the iPad tho.

Stop confusing resolution with dpi. The iphone 4 has the same resolution as the 2g, 3g, and 3gs - it has a higher dpi.
What kind of nonsense is this? lol

The iPhone 4 has a screen resolution of 960x640 and a dpi (ppi, actually) of 326.

The iPhone 1 / 3g / 3gs has a screen resolution of 480x320 and a ppi of 163.

They aren't the same by any stretch of the imagination.

Total rip off!

I agree it is useless without some ports, such as a Parallel port, a serial port for an ancient printer, about five USB 3.0 ports, and fer shur a gaudy old VGA port for my Dell 17" CRT monitor. And where's the floppy diskette drive? Apple always lets us down. Not to mention it is about $1,000 over priced. Why should I buy this when I can buy a Sony 10" laptop for $700? Isn't that about $1,000 less? Everything Apple makes is $1,000 too much. Or am I using PC math?

In other words, it can output 1080p but I don't see any format delivering it..?
The iPad's screen resolution is 1024x768. Not even 720p.

If you plan on mirroring that to another display, you're not getting 1080p anything. It's just going to scale the image up to 1080 lines. All of this is marketing nonsense.

It seems like most people here are complaining about the screen. Is it the same screen? No improvements at all in that category? I think the next iPad will have HD format and bleed to the edges just like the new iPhone 5. I am still getting this revision though! I was sold with the new cover design. Love them magnets.

I don't see how people can say it needs a thinner bezel, or none at all. How are you supposed to hold the thing without generating user input? I think it's the perfect bezel size - and it's not exactly making it ugly (IMO, at least).

So the camera on the back WILL NOT TAKE PHOTOS? because it is not good enough.

And can you even transfer photos from the iPhone to it??

or do you have to:
1) take photos on your iPhone
2) import to iPhoto on a computer
3) export them to a Finder folder
4) import the folder to iTunes to load on the iPad

Camera Kit for iPad will grabs photos from the iPhone just like it will any other camera. Or use dropbox, mobileMe, email or another option to get them on to the iPad and into iPhoto. Then iPhoto on your computer will grab them off your iPad like they were taken with the iPad.

1080P, HD TV is a max resolution of 2.1 million pixels, so a 5 MP camera is overkill for that purpose.
If you needed a 1MP image for a project, and had a choice between a 1MP native digital camera or a 12MP digital camera to shoot it with - even though the final output would be scaled to 1MP - which would you choose?

The 12MP output will look far superior than the 1MP after scaling because of oversampling. You get reduced noise, higher dynamic range, and better retained resolution. There's a difference between acquisition and delivery.

Now let's be real; I would never want to shoot a video with an iPad in the first place so it's kinda moot - but your declaration that acquiring at a greater resolution than your final output is overkill is completely wrong.

It's a relief I can safely hang on to my ipad 1 which is mainly my book reader. When they bump up the screen resolution, the ram,the cameras, make thinner that silly bezel, and make it half the weight they can rob my bank account again.

Generally speaking, I see why there have been various statements that the iPad 3 is going to be the one to wait for, even without knowing any of the details about it. Why a full media event was required for the iPad 2 I will never know - it's nothing more than a slight bump in specifications (processor excepting). Had this been coupled with an iOS 5 announcement then I can see the point but at the current time I'm definitely feeling underwhelmed.

Perhaps my expectations are simply too high. I'll see what iOS 5 looks like later in the year but at this time I'm really more interested in the HP TouchPad - that at least looks like it is advancing things. That said, it is certainly more likely that iPad 2 will be a successful product. Given that the Pre brand hasn't exactly taken off, this gives me pause for thought.

plus there are TONS of photo swapping apps that use either bluetooth or wifi to swap photos back and forth, just do a quick app search.

Mirroring, that might be true. Can't you output at 1080p though?

EDIT: Pretty sure you can. It says ~"Video mirroring and output at 1080p".

I really hope that apple gives iOS a MAJOR overhaul with the upcoming 5.0 update. The current iOS has looked pretty much the same since it was introduced years ago, and it is beginning to show its age especially on iPad. I haven't bought a tablet yet, but I'll probably buy it later this year.

The iOS doesn't bother me that much on iPhone, because the screen is small and it is better to keep things simple. However, iOS looks old on the large screen of iPad. Without the excellence of AppStore, I wouldn't even consider iPad. The interface of Android 3.0 and HP's WebOS Touchpad look so much more fresh and modern and they use the larger screen size properly. Maybe it's just me, but I'm much more excited about those other tablets.

I like flying on the back of my Pegasus while using my iPad!

From an another industrial designer's point of view, I'ld say that the iPad is far more clever than any other device with all possible ports and holes included. It's meant to be a wireless device, you can solve most of your needs without cables if you have the right technology. Apple never looks back, it always looks to the present and future. I barely uses cables and memory cards anymore, I have iDisk, AirPlay, Apple TV and a Wireless Printer, of course you can argue that not everybody have this technology to complete the perfect Apple Eco-System, but this is clearly the future, and in little time, you'll see that ports and cables will be obsolete. I praise Apple for always lead the way things are going to be, instead of creating horrible frankensteins. Viva la iPad 2!

It's funny how people expect Apple to come up with the mother of all upgrade every 6 months :D

A traditional Apple upgrade, a bump in most places.

A good device for people who do not have a current Ipad.

Fan boys will be upgrading in droves.... spec/updates never matter, just need the new shiny shape.

I for one will wait till they increase the resolution, that is the only thing I dislike about Ipad 1.0

Meh, the iPad's issue wasn't the hardware particularily anyway, it's iOS. No signficiant changes to iOS announced, no sale.
