Meh, the iPad's issue wasn't the hardware particularily anyway, it's iOS. No signficiant changes to iOS announced, no sale.

Phazer

Your statement makes no sense. If you know Apple, you know that iOS will be updated and evolving. You act like if you were to buy one today, you'd be stuck with iOS 4.3. Besides... what iOS issues do you have? It's a really slick OS.

I did not like this keynote at all. Jobs was way to arrogant with a product that is not even perfect after this update. The screen has still a horrible glare that makes it practically unable to use in direct light. The software has also hardly been updated, and I hoped that Apple would give a sneak peak on iOS 5. But at least it's faster, thinner and lighter. The iPad is just not at the spot where I want it to be, so I'll wait another year to see how things develop (e.g. competition and eBook market).

The 1st Ipad is awesome. I use mine for 2-3 hours per day at least. The other day at work, I reached out and touched my laptop screen to move something, just like I would on the ipad. (got a few weird looks from work mates. It felt so wrong to reach back down to grab the tired old mouse to get the job done)

If someone said, oh here is a laptop twice as fast, smaller, with a few extra things for the same price, a few years ago we would jump at it.
Why does everyone expect so much! It seems we all live by the 'I want it now' attitude.
All the stuff about no usb/sd/hdmi ports directly on the ipad is rubbish. Why do you need them? I have the camera connection kit, and the VGA connection kit. I have used them only a handful of times.
If you think you need all these ports then you are missing the point of what this device is actually meant for. Wireless freedom with 10 hours of battery!

Seriously, just buy 1 of these things and stop worrying about what it cant do, and more about what it can. eg the new garage band looks awesome!

A lot to like but I hope the video camera quality isn't as dismally awful as my iPod Touch as some are suggesting it will be. I appreciate a lot of people don't care but the iPad, to me, is a family-centric device for the living room and a good quality camera for HD video matters. I can't see much to attract me to rivals, though, beyond in a few cases camera quality and screen, certainly not price, certainly not software. Apple's biggest rival would seem to be iPad 3 and the waiting game. I will probably stick with my laptop, for now, though the Garageband demonstration was hugely appealing and will have wiped any disingenuous smiles off rivals faces, I would think.

Generally speaking, I see why there have been various statements that the iPad 3 is going to be the one to wait for, even without knowing any of the details about it. Why a full media event was required for the iPad 2 I will never know - it's nothing more than a slight bump in specifications (processor excepting). Had this been coupled with an iOS 5 announcement then I can see the point but at the current time I'm definitely feeling underwhelmed.

Perhaps my expectations are simply too high. I'll see what iOS 5 looks like later in the year but at this time I'm really more interested in the HP TouchPad - that at least looks like it is advancing things. That said, it is certainly more likely that iPad 2 will be a successful product. Given that the Pre brand hasn't exactly taken off, this gives me pause for thought.

Agreed that a full media event was not necessary, BUT it was a cheap advertising campaign to give the copy cats a hard time and put Apple into the spotlight.

Also agreed that our expectations are high, having been spoiled for a long time.

Having Steve there was IMO an attempt to show to share holders that he is still around and gives input.

This will be a big seller (again)

The average user probably over 90% does not visit MacRumors and is not into the elitist "must have latest tech" demands.

They will get a device that "just works" and is beautifully crafted in it's simplicity. Even grandma and grandpa get this device!

The discussions here about Retina are wasted, as this needs to be developed for this screen size, BUT since it reaches into the IOS it will have to be figured out how this works for all idevices.. If it was readily available in mass quantities it would be used.

The pixel camera discussion is also missing the point. The front camera is for facetime and the back camera is just thrown in IMO for reporting.

Serious high quality photos should be taken with a real camera. The iPad is not marketed as a camera!

About the only gripe I would have at the moment is that the 64 GB is on the weak side.

But, being in production, I understand that you can't just flip a switch and get millions of 128GB or more memory.
Most likely these are not being produced in scale (yet) to bring the price down significantly enough to include it in idevices.

IMO the entire tablet category will still need a few updates until I am a buyer, but for the 90% average users this is truly a magical product!

So the camera on the back WILL NOT TAKE PHOTOS? because it is not good enough.

And can you even transfer photos from the iPhone to it??

or do you have to:
1) take photos on your iPhone
2) import to iPhoto on a computer
3) export them to a Finder folder
4) import the folder to iTunes to load on the iPad

Use DropBox, Bump or PhotoShare. Stop moaning.

Meh... I don't own an iPad, iPhone or laptop for that matter so I'm basically just a desktop whiner. I'll wait for the iPad that runs full version OS XI... what do you think... late 2012?

iPad will never.

You can buy an Axiotron. I actually wonder why they don't do the Air version though.

Here's an interesting sidenote: Androids are riddled with viruses and malware!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12633923

It's more or less inevitable at this stage that soon they either move to a - sensible - closed shop, properly monitored philosophy or face anti-virus being effectively mandatory in the very near future. I don't think anyone with any sense would purchase a phone / tablet for which the latter became necessary, so there are big decisions to be made.

SUCKS!

I just snapped a photo of my keyboard with my iPod touch. The characters of the keyboard are unreadable on the photo. That's how bad the back camera on the iPod touch is.

And these geniuses decided to take the iPod touch cameras and slap them on the iPad, which has a 10 inch screen?! That has to be a joke! And they have no freaking LED-flash. Unless you're shooting on a beach in mid-summer, most photos and videos shot with it, will be utterly useless.

If they couldn't do cameras right, they shouldn't have done them at all. Even at the 3inch ipod-touch screen your head hurts on how bad the photo you just snapped looks.

On a 10 inch screen the photos this camera produces will make your eyes bleed.

And facetime! Give me a break. With the VGA camera, if you facetime with someone, their face will literally appear as a bunch of blobs.

This is why they only spoke of the cameras and facetime, and didn't demonstrate them. They would have seriously embarassed themselves.

You are absolutely right! No-one is going to be able to take ANY photo's at all or make movies, and everyone's face will be completely unrecognizable in facetime, I mean really, actually literally, unrecognizable! ..

I know all this cos you just said so!

Back in the real world however, it doesn't seem to be a problem.

I want to get one, but I am very concern that Apple will release a new one in the Fall or before this year.

Why won't Apple answer simple questions?

I'm a neutral party here, not a fanboy and not a hater. But I was planning on buying the iPad 2 until yesterday... I was surprised as much by what Steve Jobs didn't say yesterday, as by what he did.

I called Apple this morning to ask about the RAM and the front- and rear-facing cameras, and it was really a strange conversation. She seemed to be completely confused by the question. Instead of saying we're not sure, we don't have a spec sheet yet, etc., the woman at Apple insisted that while the iPhone 4 and the iPad 1 use RAM, the new iPad 2 does not. None. It doesn't use any at all.

Also, on the camera question, she said that their cameras are not and cannot be measured in terms of megapixels. Again, she wouldn't even concede that it was a reasonable question to ask about a product I was planning to buy. Now I know that megapixels aren't the end all, be all of camera quality, but it does give a metric by which to compare them. Does the new iPad have the same low-quality cameras as the current iPod touch, or does it have the better cameras of the iPhone? Again, no answer from Apple.

What's going on here? How can they say that don't reveal such details because consumers don't care, when I'm a consumer and I care? Fine, don't talk about it at the keynote, but don't evade the question afterwards. It seems they just trying desperately to avoid the side-by-side comparison with their competitors that Jobs was trying to make himself yesterday on a range of other criteria.

I guess what I'm saying is: I like the device, but really hate the company's tactics on this.

It's typical Apple - just boycott it and buy something else...

They have same attitude towards Flash. They advertise iPad as best browsing device on the market without saying that you can't view huge chunk of www on it - LOL

Screw'em

No offense, but asking a customer service or sales rep a technical question is like asking your dog. You'll get about the same amount of accurate information from each.

I agree witht he guy above, these are not too technical of questions, they are pretty basic and straight forward, it's not like your asking what the typical response is between a 3G iPad and the towers in a metropolitan area!

It's equivilant to going out to buy a car, and asking if it uses ABS braking or a drum brake....If a sales rep told me he didn't know that, and couldn't find out I would certainly be like WTF; just as I am right now with the RAM # being MIA for this product, I work in sales, and if someone can't answer a basic question like that, it usually means there's something else going on, I love Apple, but if they configured some new hardware that doesn't use RAM(far fetched) then they would prominently talk about it, and advocate it.

Does it really? I'm a web designer and I would love to be able to use an ipad to show my clients that their sites DON'T NEED flash, that pretty much everything can be done with jquery and to let them know that their site will be able to display on the ipad (and avoid carrying my laptop when I go to presentations/meetings). Is there a web design app that lets you edit code and save it locally? also if you're working on your computer can you upload files to the ipad to edit/show on the browser?

Thanks

Hmm, I don't know if such an app exists... But it would technically be possible. All apps are allowed to save data in their own "sandbox" (GoodReader, Keynote, iCab, etc). Some of these apps also enable the feature so that you can use iTunes to copy files to or from their sandboxes. It would be allowable for someone to write an app that lets you dump a "site" archive (or something) from iTunes into the app, then go access those pages from the iPad only.

Also, unlike the iPad.. Xoom prices will go down with time... Start high to handle supply etc... Have you not noticed how Apple is pretty much only electronics company not to do this? Keep prices same right till next release...

Do you really think the other companies are lowering the prices out of the goodness of their heart? They lower the prices because that's the only way to sell the stuff when it gets near EOL. If they could keep the prices the same, they certainly would.

Apple keeps the prices high because they keep selling.

Does anyone know how much RAM the iPad has? a co-worker and I were debating this....

Apple doesn't states RAM in their specs for iDevices. You have to wait for an iFixit teardown on release day. Is likely to be 512MB but could be 1GB even though i wouln't bet on it.

And I would recommend to stop thinking at the specs all the time and try the software.
