I think the base 16 is the model to get this year. Action + camera buttons are good life improvements. Very solid update given the impressive CPU/GPU and battery life bump.

Im not sure what some of you were expecting?

Give me an option to buy a mini version!! I absolutely do NOT want something that large in my pocket. While you're at it, go ahead and make it thicker so it can hold a larger battery and the edges can be rounded like the original and I'd be extra happy. You know, make something comfortable to hold and use and small enough to carry around.
I feel your pain… but sign up for an iPhone 15 now or SE when it comes out next March. Because there’ll be no Mini.

Coming from an iPhone XR the base iPhone 16 looks like a safe, low risk upgrade. Several years of small incremental changes results in a fairly significant update, for me. Even though, I’ll wait a month or so to make sure there or no “gotcha”. If I’m spending this amount of money, I’m just highly risk averse, and the iPhone 16 looks safe. Also I like the blue color, much better than the rumors.

Don’t real see the benefit of the Pro version, I would rather use the money to upgrade the storage.

I would use it if I were upgrading this year. I have my Action button set to open Camera in video mode on my 15 Pro.

I only ever take pictures and video in landscape, the correct way. And I agree I hope it does encourage the scourge of portrait oriented photos and videos to finally end.
I learned to never take video in landscape on an iPhone years ago b/c it never plays back right on other devices or when shared. Did something change in the last 5-7 years?

My wife has a 12. Her battery at 89% and she is constrained with storage these days.
Is the 16 worth it vs a 14 refurb, for example?

That's not bad at all for a 12 (if you've had it 4 years, anyways). My 14 Pro is at 85% :|

This year feels like a more substantial year over year update than usual for the non-pro iPhone--probably thanks to things like their AI push and maybe that people are upgrading less frequently.

(I would say that the difference between the 14 refurb and the 12 will not be as substantial as even the difference between the 16 and the 14, but whether you'll even notice is the question. The 12 is still pretty capable, so the storage constraint your wife is bumping up against is unfortunate.)

I bought it for her for valentines day, but not sure if it was 6 months or 18 months into the product cycle for the 12. My 12pro refurb I bought last year has a worse battery level at 88% so her battery has been pretty solid, though that 89% is NOT giving her 89% of the hours compared to 100% new. So I don’t know what 89% means to Apple.

She really prizes light weight and I think of all the phones between 12 and 16, the 14 is the heaviest family. She feels the difference between my pro and her regular 12 more than I do.

Have never had an issue playing back portrait or landscape video. But landscape video is the correct orientation/ratio for TVs and most other displays made for viewing.

Depends on use case and budget. The AI features aren't something I will use much - at least not yet.

Camera upgrades minimal and if she's just posting photos to social media, they all get compressed anyways so who cares.

Can’t wait for the regular iPhones to get ProMotion. The Pros have honestly outgrown my needs.

I'm personally thrilled with how the base model 16 turned out. I think the UltraMarine color looks great. I have no need for the advanced camera features that the pro models offer. I almost never record video, so being able to record in 4k 120hz is a feature that is lost on me. The screen refresh rate on the base model doesn't bother me either. I switch back and forth between a 14 pro max (personal phone) and a XR (work phone) many times during the day now so I know I won't be bothered by that. My 14PM battery is down to 85% capacity even with the always on screen disabled and optimized charging turned on. With the AT&T carrier trade in offering me 800.00 for trade on my 14PM it will completely offset the cost of the base model 16 aside from tax and activation, so I feel like I'd be silly not to make the switch.

This release is as meh as the last year one. Whats the point of AI this year for languages other than english? The thing is not even finished yet. :(

Kind of strange how I was focusing so hard on where I would be landing in the “wow” vs “meh” debate - but now I’m so sad about James Earl Jones that I really just don’t care about this right now.
