Apple today announced the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max—its latest flagship smartphones—featuring larger displays, an all-new Camera Control button, and the A18 Pro chip.

The iPhone 16 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max features a 6.9-inch display – the biggest iPhone display ever. The borders around the display are the thinnest of any Apple device. The titanium frame now features a new blasted finish and a refreshed selection of color options: a darker Black Titanium, brighter White Titanium, Natural Titanium, and a new Desert Titanium.

The new devices contain the A18 Pro chip with Apple Intelligence support. It is faster and more efficient than the A18 in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. The A18 Pro is made using 2nd-generation 3nm technology and offers a new 16-core Neural Engine with 17% more memory bandwidth. Apple Intelligence tasks run up to 15% faster than on the A17 Pro. A new, faster 6-core GPU runs up to 20% faster than A17 Pro. A new 6-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores is 15% faster and 20% more efficient than A17 Pro, with next-generation machine learning accelerators. It also supports faster USB-C speeds and two-times data processing for video encoding.

There is a new "Fusion" 48-megapixel camera and refreshed camera interface offer a 2nd-generation quad-pixel sensor, with 0 shutter lag for 48MP ProRAW and HEIF photos. There is also a 48-megapixel ultra wide camera for the first time, with a quad-pixel sensor with autofocus. The 5x tetraprism telephoto camera is also now present on the iPhone 16 Pro.

Photographic Styles have also been overhauled to adapt colors and shadows in real-time. Adjustments are applied to specific colors, not just adding one shade to a scene. There are new black-and-white options, a natural style, and more. Styles can be personalized by adjusting tone and color, and can be added after capture. Styles can be applied during live preview. Apple describes it as "like professional color grading in real time."

The iPhone 16 Pro supports 4K120 capture in full HDR, made possible by the faster sensor on the 48-megapixel Fusion camera. The camera app also has intelligent audio treatment to reduce wind noise. 4K120 can be used in slo-mo or video mode, and it can be adjusted after capture for playback in 120, 60, 30, or 24 fps.

The Camera Control is a dedicated, flush sapphire crystal button with haptic feedback dedicated to camera app functions. Clicking the Camera Control launches the camera app. Clicking again takes a picture, while clicking to hold records video. The Camera Control also offers touch gestures, allowing it to distinguish between a click and a lighter press. A light press reveals a new clean preview to help users focus on framing the shot, while a new overlay allows for quick access to camera functions like zoom and switching between lenses. Users can press lightly twice to see other controls and slide to the preferred one. Camera Control will be updated later this year to lock focus and exposure with a half-press.

The Camera Control also gains Visual Intelligence, a new Apple Intelligence feature exclusive to the iPhone 16 lineup. Visual Intelligence is invoked by the Camera Control, allowing users to point their iPhone's camera at something and pull up contextual details such as information about a restaurant, as well as take actions like filling out a calendar event.

With improved microphones, the iPhone 16 Pro supports Spatial Audio capture during video recording, for a more immersive experience when using AirPods or Apple Vision Pro. A new Audio Mix feature uses machine learning to identify and separate background audio and speech. For example, "In-Frame Mix" isolates the voice of the person on camera. "Cinematic Mix" handles audio like a movie, with on-screen audio in front and environmental noises in the surroundings. There are also updates coming to the Voice Memos, allowing you to layer a track on top of existing recordings.

The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999 for 128GB and $1199 for iPhone 16 Pro Max for 256GB. They are available for pre-order on Friday and launch on September 20.

Is the camera the same across all of the pro max storages?

I normally upgrade every year (irrational i know) but this year every fibre of my being is thinking...meh...no thanks.

I'll be curious if there's a RAM upgrade. Otherwise i may just pass this year.

Literally couldn't care less about spatial audio or 4K 120fps recording.

Colours are underwhelming too.

I just want a small phone that fits in my pocket.
Give me an iphone SE form factor with a lower power display, a higher performance camera and processor, and a longer battery life than I have in my current iPhone SE 2022.
You have to compete with the flip phone that is making a comeback that fits much better in a purse or pocket.
Bigger is not always better.

Let me give everyone the cliff notes: Tim Cook drops the ball on naming the Apple Watch X.

AirPods 3 for people who didn’t want noise cancellation but now can buy it for $50 more, but you might as well buy the pro 2s, because for $20 more, you can turn it into a hearing aid in the future.

New iPhones, the only thing major is software called Apple Intelligence. Bigger screen where you will not notice a significance. Recycled color. The only true new feature is the camera button which people will only use for snapping photos and none of the other features Apple built the last 2 years.

First time I will be keeping my iPhone for longer than 2 iterations.

You might as well have called this WWDC Part 2.

I honestly dont get how you guys degrade your battery so quickly! My 12pro is still on 86% and i use my phone like a LOT!
Do you guys turn off battery optimization features or something? Or did the battery quality TANK on some model after iPhone 12 and onwards?
*reading this on my 14 pro max with 82% battery health and AppleCare+* well I can either spend a metric ton on Apple Intelligence and slightly better everything else or wait another 2% and get a free battery swap and feel like I have a new phone all over again

128gb is a joke, Airpods Max being "refreshed" with USB-C and new colors is also a joke.

Somehow the Pro Max has zero improvements over the pro, apart from size? Is this a first?

But I for one think the new photo button is very cool and useful. They sold me a new phone for sure.

One of the most boring events in a while my God apart from the Apple Intelligence everything was bland and boring.

Boo Apple! Half the vaguely cool stuff like push to focus and most of Apple Intelligence features isnt even ready. The AirPods hearing aid was about the only innovative thing at the announcement and it’s not even FDA approved yet!

The prerecorded show also gave me big “phoning it in” vibes. Such meh.

can we please fire 80% of apple iphone design and development team? It feels like they do NOTHING. NOTHING.
It’s about time we set the record straight on this because from what I have read this week the majority of readers don’t realise how the industry works.

Products take years to develop. With all the testing, prototyping and engineering that goes into to them you can’t just bring out a flashy new model every year. A good analogy would be the games industry which works on an 8-year product cycle.

Apple’s product roadmap is a decade long (Evidence: iPhone 1-X) and the majority of the phone buying public are locked into 3-4 year contracts. They roll upgrade at most twice in a decade. The fan-people who make themselves part of the masochistic annual cycle are a minority.

Each year is a mark on the graph, bringing incremental upgrades as it moves along. Apple could play their hand all at once and bring out an industry defining phone but then much like the games industry, leave it for 5 years. In that time Android competitors are releasing newer, shiner models. Somebody coming out of that contract cycle sees a 4-year old iPhone or a newer Android model: which would they buy?

Phone design plateaued a long time ago and they’ve settled into everyday product status. If games consoles are a bad analogy let’s go closer to home: Apple still effectively sells the PowerBook G4 20 years later. Sure it’s gone on a diet and had a brain transplant in that time but the DNA is still there. And nobody ever complains laptops look the same for yet another year.

Apple went boring as soon as Steve Jobs passed. Listen, I have a MacBook and an iPhone, and I will be staying with Apple for the foreseeable future, but sweet Jesus, sooo boring. At least, if rumors are to be believed, we will get a thinnest iPhone ever! next year, but where is the flip? Where is the stuff like Motorola MS 150(Korean market), and Serene by Bang and Olufsen? I had both of those and they had the wow factor nailed. They rang distinctively and looked like the future. I remember selling my Serene to some Russian dudes and taking the money and getting the first iPhone. The iPhone was the future, but now?

Based on rumors so far, this new iPhone 17 “Air” will not replace the iPhone 17 Pro. It will be a new higher priced model and the 17 Pro will look similar to the 16 Pro. Of course, we could get new rumors until then.
Ah okay thanks. Well id rather wait for that then, no matter what they decide to call it. No real reason to stress about AI capabilities that dont work in EU/Sweden anyway.
