I work for AT&T at a corporate store and the internal memos basically say that if you have bought one of the original 3g iphones within 30 days you can either A) return it now and wait for the new ones, just paying a 10% restockign fee and buy the new one when it comes out, or B) if your still within 30 days on june 19th you can return it then and pay the 10% restock and get whatever model you want.

And furthermore, I dont know which company you could go to, and they would just hand you a brand new 700$ piece of equipment, that was just released, for free or with minimal penalties. I'm not overly loyal to my own company, but if you are one of the R-tards who think just because you pay your bill, ATT should eat a handful of money to get you the brand new phone you want, your loyalty would be much more appreciated somewhere else..I assure you.

The iphone is all about apps, of those 5,000 developers how many of them are small developers like me , with families to support.

Everyone of those members of the iphone dev program have 3gs phones that don't qualify for the lowest upgrade, How many apps do you think are going to get written to take advantage of video. So who is really getting screwed.

Furthermore there ARE indeed carriers that let you upgrade at subsidized price for special products.

Upgrade price for 2G -> G3S

what is the upgrade price for owners of the 2G iPhone?

I would say this is more important because that are the people most likely to upgrade. If I had a 3G i would definately not upgrade for just a video camera.

Just did it: $299 + whatever ATT charges for activation/upgrade/whatever for the 32GB model; 199 for the 16GB version.

I demand subsidized pricing! when the new iphone is released ill be at at&t buying 2 new iphones! i currently have 2 and will be buying a new one and upgrading another! ill be pay $90 a month in just data plans(i now pay $60)!!!! i want subsidized pricing!!!!!! im a loyal iphone customer!
Imagine that my friend!
this is what i don't get either.

Contract end date07/14/2010

but i'm not eligible to upgrade until 12/15/09 according to Apple's site.

Why are some people that got their 3G in july able to upgrade in July>?
Well looking at the site now tells me 12/12/2009 to get subsidized pricing. If I want to purchase one now it will cost the hefty fee as aforementioned. When I put in my wifes information (Which she has never owned an iphone) It tells me that I can upgrade her phone in July(The same time I upgraded my 3Giphone!!!)Which is odd as can be.

I show I can upgrade 7/15/09.....

One more time for you guys who just can't get it....2G was unsubsidized, even though we locked in to ATT for 2 years. 3G was subsidized, and ATT tore up our old 2 year committment for a new one.

Pricing for 3GS is exactly what I expected, given that the 3G was subsidized. And since the 3GS is no great leap, I can wait the extra month and save the $200. Or, just wait until next year.

I don't know where everyone (including the macrumors post) is getting these upgrade prices. Apple says on their website: For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB).

Just go to the apple site:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/buy/
Different accounts are posting different things.

Sell your 16GB 3G for $400 and use the proceeds to help pay for the $499 32GB 3GS.
Iphones are selling good on ebay. Sold my 1st Gen on ebay like 2 1/2 months after 3G dropped for $650.00
Mine is in mint condition and has the drop protection. I have followed ebay for the last few weeks on the sell of 16GB 3G iPhones being sold internationally and they are selling from 500-up. Seen one sell over $750
so there is an outlet for us 3G owners.

Keep in mind that there are numerous posts on Craigslist every day that say "we buy iPhone3Gs for $200" and they turn around and sell them on eBay for $400. I'm not sure who buys them for $400, but if you look at eBay, people keep buying them. (keep in mind that the unsubsidized iPhone3G was like $600) I will probably buy the new 3G S from Apple and then sell my old phone on eBay.
Again they are selling like hotcakes on ebay. International sales as well as having shipping free for US has gotten the best sells as it seems.

if you can get that much for it in the next few days. I suspect there will be a flood of 3g iphones on ebay soon...
Already are......

I don't know how the people before me are able to upgrade in July of this year. I stood in line for the iphone 3G and got it that day. I just went through apple's website and it's going to cost $500 for me. It also states "You may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade on 03/12/2010." Please tell me how some people are getting different answers for the same question.
My upgrade says 12/12/09 my wifes upgrade says 07/12/09
if done before then it will cost me a pretty penny......

Yeah, I got the $499 price through Apple's website when I tried to pre-order it. I'm not sure where the $699 is coming from.

Well, footnote 2 on the Apple store iPhone page actually says that existing 3G owners have to pay $699 for a 32 GB iPhone. I'm not sure why some people like yourself only have to pay $499. Mine still shows up as $699 and I bought my 3G on day 1.

Tony

As I remember when I had Verizon, I could upgrade at any time and they would tack the new extension onto the balance of my plan.

um, not really. in a lot of cases, if you weren't at least a year in, you couldn't activate early upgrade or New Every Two.

I got $699. So did many others above, so I'm still confused. Why did YOU get $499 and me $699?

Tony

Go to ATT MyWireless, Profile, User Information.

What's your contract end date? Mine's 7/5/2010.

I don't understand why it stated "Delivered by June 19" on ever screen prior to my order going through then... seems like false advertising. I put down over 300 dollars on the phone. I wouldn't have minded a few more bucks for quick shipping, but they made it sound like same-day delivery, and for free, so I didn't worry about it.

Not cool.

If you're waiting until June 19th when the phone becomes available, rest assured that June 24th or 25th for delivery won't kill you.

iPod Touch

I am wondering when the updated iPod Touch would come out. Would it have the same GPS capabilities including TomTom in the new iPod Touch..

Lame.

Woo, we finally get a camera upgrade, and all they can manage is a 3.2AF with no flash? That would have been acceptable, perhaps, on the -original- iPhone...But given that I can get 5MP on midrange Nokia/SE, and 8+ is available (not to mention that they use much bigger lenses/sensors and have LED lights, if not true xenon flashes)...this is unacceptable for the price. Still no removable storage or battery...lame. Enough. Time to get a new Nokia. 🙁

Is there any way to see the rate plans before entering your SSN etc?

ATT hasn't updated their web-site. Are we supposed to assume the rate plans are the same for the new iPhone?

I hope everyone realizes Apple is screwing everyone that was nice enough to be day 1 upgraders every time. We have to pay an extra $200 to upgrade!!! That is crazy!! 499 instead of 299. Hopefully someone at apple realizes this is really unfair to the loyal fans of apple products.

Blame ATT. They subsidized the price of the original 3G (but not the orignail 2G), and it takes a while for those monthly fees to pay off the difference. So you don't get a subsidized 3GS until you've paid off the 3G.

Blame either ATT (and other providers) or the fact that the actual price of the phone is about $500 for the 32G.

Would this work?

Ok i like others bought my 3G the day it came out and am not eligable for an upgrade. However my mom's motorola has been eligable for an upgrade for a while now...what if I:
Upgrade her line to a new iphone
Subsequently cancelled the newly added iphone data plan added to her line
put the new sim back in her old phone
put my current 3g's sim in the new phone

Would it work?

$699?

Okay. I can see the $100-$200 premium if you are not yet eligible but the fine print says $699 for the 32gig. I am a bit amused at the arrogance at such pricing. I mean, come on, there isn't a cellular phone that is worth $699.

I agree. They are nuts! It will cost me $200 more to upgrade from a 3g? I've been debating about the Palm Pre. My prorated early termination fee would be $125 (just called AT&T). So it would be cheaper for me to cancel my contract, then walk in the door and sign a new AT&T contract. Or, buy the Pre for $199 and cancel the iphone. If I include the early termination fee with the price of the Pre, I would be paying $323 for the Pre. This would save me $176 over the cost of the 32GB 3GS. I know the Pre has only 8 GB of storage, but I would still keep the 3G, just not use it as a phone.

I really hate Sprint, so going there is my last option. But it is an option. Please AT&T, stop the insanity.

Thank you. You'll just have to use your crappy, out of date, useless brick of an iPhone 3G for 5 more days. If you can last that long.

To the UK viewers.

If you are still wondering what the price is in the UK for the new Apple iPhone 3GS, here it is.

Straight from the O2 website for PAYG.

- iPhone 3G S 16GB - £440.40
- iPhone 3G S 32GB - £538.30

Monthly is even steeper. Source.

I think, as always; I'll stick with PAYG.

Sorry if this has been posted. I thought I'd post a little bit of info just incase.

Bah i am waiting for my contract to end next no oled, no bigger screen i hope its in the 4th gen, the 32gb is an improvement but things like video, compass and an extra 1 megapixel i can live without, what happened to matt black finish.

i get what i edited out. i don't get why you can upgrade 7/15 and i can upgrade 12/15. i'd wait another month no problem.

thanks for being a sport and taking questions. any opinion on the above - why some early adopters of 3G (my contract AT&T is up 7.15.10) have to wait until 12.15.09 and some can upgrade 07.15.09?

No problem there. Also, the reason some people can upgrade and others have to wait, is you have to have your phone for at least 6 months before we can even do the "exception upgrade" which makes the phone around 400 (depending on the model).

Also, if anyone has any questions, you can PM me if you'd like.

To all the counter-whiners who say that 3G owners should suck it up on the higher price. The problem many of us have is that we have been iPhone owners since launch day of the original iPhone. When the 3G was launched, there was no higher price for an "early upgrade." We simply paid the subsidized price and were locked into a new 2 year contract. iPhone owners were treated no differently than first-time buyers of the iPhone 3G. What AT&T is doing here IS new for them, and based on the example they set last year, they ARE in fact screwing long-term iPhone owners.

The difference being that when you bout your first-gen iPhone, AT&T didn't subsidize it at all, therefore they weren't losing out on anything when you upgraded to your 3G and got that at a subsidized price. This time, you bought an iPhone 3G 11 months ago, and now you want out of your contract for a new one 13 months before it's over and they've recouped their investment of subsidizing your 3G.

This isn't new for anyone, it's how every cell phone has worked for years on every major carrier. The first-gen iPhone was a special case in that there was no option of subsidized pricing, and therefore no particular loss when they said you could upgrade early.

Strange! I was a day 6 upgrader and I was offered 12/19/2009. I paid the unsubsidized price. Did you?

is ANYONE at all surprised by any of this? Just go to the store next week and sort it out. Obviously buying online is not working. So either call and wait on hold for an hour or just go to the store when its available and sort it out.

Apple is shaking their heads at AT&T now...
