FYI most smart phones are very expensive unsubsidized. The pre for example is listed at best buy for $850.

How does your contract end in 2010. I bought an iphone 3G the day it came out, when only new account/add-a-line customers were the only ones able to buy. Mine ends on 7/11/210 exactly 2 years after i bought it so i am still very confused at how brand new iphone 3G buyers have their contracts ending before 2 years and are able to upgrade before 18 months into their current "2-year contract"

Do you read? The Original iPhone was purchased for $499 and $599 with NO SUBSIDIES by AT&T. This is the ONLY reason people were able to gain the subsidy for the 3G iPhone even though they had bought the Original iPhone just 1 year earlier. AT&T gave no benefit, bonus or subsidy on the Original iPhone. Everyone paid full price for the phone.

IPhone 3G to iPhone 3Gs means you got a subsidy 1 year ago for a new 2 year contract. You are not eligible for the subsidy again after just one year. You KNEW this when you entered into your contract last year ... at least you would if you read it.

From what i recall it was similar with Leopard. It was delivered in the afternoon of the release date.

I have a 16GB Black ordered. 32GB wont even come close to holding all my music so why spend the extra $100? I'm doing fine on the 8GB now. Get me a 64GB option then I'll consider.
 
The pricing scheme is as follows (and remember, I am typing this, from my computer at work at an ATT Corporate store, while staring at the email as follows from apple!!)

I can tell you in advance, this is not going to fit what EVERYONE has been told because there are reps on customer support who probably STILL dont know there is a new iphone, but for the majority of the public, it should be:

If you have a 2g iPhone, and never upgraded, the phone will be either 199 or 299 (depending on whether you wanted 16gb or 32gb).

If you have a 3g iPhone and you have had it for MORE than 6 months, it will be 399 or 499 (again, depending on the model)

If you have a 3g and have had it for less than 6 months, but more than 30 days, it will be 599 or 699.

And if you have had the 3g for less than 30 days, you can return it to a corporate store or apple store, and pay the 10% restocking fee, and swap for whichever one you want.

This is the official memo from AT&T and Apple.

I do agree with you on the video aspect as well as the few new hardware features mentioned, Allot of new roads and highways are sitting and waiting to be traveled, but US as consumers will either bite the bullet or wait an extremely long time to upgrade/update (Whether its a month or months-Other Devs. that can afford it get the jump on small time devs like myself and others like Michelle)

Well I'm debating wether I want to upgrade or not, unfortunately the whole business aspect of it makes it a decision different than say buying a car.
We need to discuss it.

I realize all cell phone carriers work this way, although Sprint will give you special pricing. but thats just another thing wrong with this country.

0 in the way of innovation.

I guess I have a week to decide. A question, if we go with the higher price can we still buy at the apple store or do we need to go to att direct.

Many unanswered questions.
And the last thing we need is someone calling us a bunch of retards because we don't agree with how things are handled.

show me one phone on the market that is possibly part of the livelyhood of the owner to keep up todate, show me one phone were the company producing it is dependent on apps from x number of developers to keep it viable in a market getting crowder.

(I wouldn't be surprised if someone beats me to this. Also this question has been asked and answered already.)

The 1st Gen Iphone was unsubsidized. That is why we paid $500-$600 for them. So the upgrade did not have to factor subsidized money into the equation last year.
 
O2's internet Tethering options are up now:

£14.68/mth for 3GB, minimum 30 days, 19.6p per MB over the allowance.
£29.36/mth for 10GB, minimum 30 days, 19.6p per MB over the allowance.

Seems a bit pricey considering the already high monthly tariffs.

I just tried checking my upgrade eligibility on Apple's website but the telephone number entry doesn't work from my iPhone. I had to do it from my MBP. And another thing. It's supposedly illegal to have to give your SSN for anything other than employment/banking. How do the phone companies skirt the law on that?

I have an original iPhone so I went to the online Apple store to pre-order. I put my info in and ATT wants to charge me an upgrade fee + and activation fee. Is this correct? I thought the activation fee was only for new accts.

slightly off topic.

That is not the case. The Zune HD will output 720p from its dock (which is nice). The built in screen is not HD. The built in screen is slightly less resolution than a touch but it is a true 16x9 aspect ratio. It does not do 1080p anything.
 
so voice control requires a faster iphone? hmmmmm. even though google uses voice recognition on the iphone. I wonder if there'll be an 'app for that' substitute or will apple decline the entry?
 
Well I'm equally pissed as everyone is. I called AT&T and they said I can just take my parent's upgrade, so "Whew" I don't have to pay $500. I get it for $299 🙂 for the 32 GB Model.

It does seem a little odd that's for sure. o2 will be missing out on at least £250 from me because of the way they've gone about it or the way Apple has told them too.

I see no reason why they can't extend your previous contract, keep you tied down, make you pay £150 or so and then perhaps even add a small amount on each month to cover the rest of the upgrade cost if there actually is one.

Because its needed to do the credit check, just like its needed for loan applications for your home or car or even to apply for a credit card. Every time your credit is checked, you will have to give your social security.
 
What about Fido/Rogers?

Any words on the Fido/Rogers rate if you're a 3g user? Is it as bad as AT&T? I'm a day one 3G user and I'm seriously wondering if the switch to 3GS is worth it.

I would call customer service but I'm pretty sure they'll be as clueless as I am right now 😉

Again, this is not true for me. I've had the iPhone 3G for 11 months and Im still getting the $699 price.

Especially considering wifi is everywhere at the minute.

If the upgrade fee is the $199-299 +$18, then it is correct, and you will have a new 2-year contract to go with it. If it is the $399-699, then it is incorrect and you should call AT&T.
 
illogical early "upgrade" pricing

i checked online, and it will cost $699 for me to upgrade to the 32 GB model at Launch.

Logic dictates that $175+299 is more attractive than $400+299.

Early termination here i come, wheeee 😀

Of course, i could wait until October to buy my phone when the website says i can pay the standard upgrade price, whatever that is, but where's the fun in that? 🙄
