As many people already have stated correctly: If you upgrade your phone before the AGREED contract ends, you pay for the privilege to get a new phone before the AGREED contract ends. That's the case with ANY phone upgrade with ANY U.S. carrier.

And no carrier forces anyone to upgrade before the agreed contract ends...

It would work...I think ATT just requires you keep phone plan for 2 years. I can't imagine they could argue if you just say you broke the iPhone and therefore don't need the data plan portion. You're mom wouldn't be able to upgrade her old Motorolla for 2 years though.

It's not going to kill me, no, but it is annoying. I've held off on purchasing an iPhone to now, and my current phone contract ends next Wednesday. The way this was lining up, it was just a nice continuity of coverage. And it's something I'm more than willing to pay for. So now I have to sit on the phone waiting for a rep to upgrade my shipping so it may arrive sooner. If Apple had been more clear on what free shipping meant (though I don't see any accident here: how do you mix up delivered by and shipped by?).

I'm not foaming at the mouth or anything lol. It's just an unfortunate frustration to deal with.

edit: and I don't currently have any kind of iPhone. Assumptions make an ass out of you and me. 😛

OK, let's say for a minute we forget the price paid for an upgrade to 3GS.

Why is no one questioning the fact that at the end, ATT will not unlock your old (officially defunct according to them) iphone?

That's criminal at any rate, but ESPECIALLY at $699!

Doesn't anyone else think that is an issue ATT needs to address? They unlock all other phones at the end of contract.
 
I just thought I'd throw my .02 in here:

I called one of the local AT&T stores and they said they had no knowledge of a new phone whatsoever. Everything I told them about today's Keynote was all new knowledge to them, so I called customer support and got the same speech and asked for a supervisor.

She told me that they were told this phone wasn't being released until August (so remember that the next time they tell you they know nothing🙄) and they had JUST been told that a new phone was being released. I bought my 3G the day it came out and she told me that I'd be eligible for an early upgrade, and to call an AT&T store and pre-order it and I could get it for $299

So I call a different AT&T store in my area, and they said they just got the info in, but after looking at my account, I'm definitely NOT eligible for an early upgrade and it would be $699 for the phone (even though on Apple's website it gave me the $499 price)

The moral of this story is: Nobody knows what the hell is going on. Yes it pisses me off just like everyone else, but give them a day to read over this stuff and get their story straightened out. I certainly won't be buying one for $700, but the people at the stores don't have any control over that, and what does it say about Apple that they didn't tell these people until 5:00 today when this comes out in like 12 days?

Call your local store tomorrow, see what they tell you, maybe hope isn't lost after all

Furthermore there ARE indeed carriers that let you upgrade at subsidized price for special products.

I totally Agree with you on this one Michelle.
I have been working on some apps with my family and I as well am a small dev.
My plan was to upgrade my iphone as well as my wife to get one because we both are going to be developing, now I have to decide which is more feasible...
1. Just let my wife upgrade
2. Bite the bullet and upgrade both lines
I do agree with you on the video aspect as well as the few new hardware features mentioned, Allot of new roads and highways are sitting and waiting to be traveled, but US as consumers will either bite the bullet or wait an extremely long time to upgrade/update (Whether its a month or months-Other Devs. that can afford it get the jump on small time devs like myself and others like Michelle can build apps around the new hardware and possibly stealing that "dream" idea)
 
I'm just rather dissapointed that moving from Iphone 3G to Iphone 3GS ... a $400 dollar price tag is not worth the price of admission.

$200....absolutely.
 
for those saying shame on ATT, shame on Apple too..Charging $699 for a phone is ridiculous in the first place. They are positioning themselves to be the heros here and ATT the goat, even though the prices would be outrageous because APPLE has priced the phone so high.
 
i don't understand whats with all the fuzz..

people, give AT&T a big C$$K, go get the phone at the full price, without being locked to some provider and then play happy..

jailbreak it, put in a nice VOIP client and talk like crazy..

me for a change, im curious about the ipod touch, lets see what september brings...

I can't blame ATT for a bunch of things, but the subsidized portion of their contract isn't one of them. Nearly every carrier offers to pay for a portion of your new phone in return for a 2 year commitment. Once you fulfill that commitment, you again qualify for then to help you buy another phone.

iPhone 3G came out last year, so at most your 1 year into your 2 year commitment. In other words, you've only half paid them back for your phone. They will actually grant you that "subsidy" at around 16 to 18 months into the 24 months.

ATT didn't fork out any cash for the 1st gen, which is why EVERY iPhone user qualified for the full subsidy when the 3G came out.

This is standard practice.

If you want to be pissed, be pissed that they can't offer MMS as quickly as the rest of the world, or that tethering may never be offered, or bitch that their monthly fees and data plans are too high. Be pissed that their coverage is sketchy and 3G availability is even worse. Be pissed they can't even update their site even though they new today was the announcement. ATT is lame alright. Very lame.

Mr Jobs...I know you're ill and taken your eye off the ball a bit, but you've f**ked-up big time?! Pathetic. 3g S is just an updated 3g, not a new model...It's starting to look dated now...
Great, so it's taken 2yrs to add half the features we should just expect on any phone, you've not bothered to update the design and totally relying on the software to keep ahead of the game? In the meantime, design by other makers and the software, the likes of android, will just catch you up.
When the original iphone came out, everything else looked like an antique, not now though...
I was in the que and got my 16gig 3g on July 11th 2008, but I couldn't give a rats ass about the 3gs and I just look forward to getting my free 3.0 software upgrade on June 17th. No OLED screen is a major f**k-up, sh*t 2yr outdated optics on a camera is also a major f**k-up.
I'm sticking you, for now, but if I was a new customer, I'd seriously be looking at an Android Phone, Samsung Omnia HD or Palm Pre.
I will wait a year, and if 4th gen isn't up there, feature wise, I'm gone...
I'm a fanboy, yes, but I'm not a mindless sheep...
The fact that I'm on my 8th screen of apps is the only thing keeping me with you and I'd be jailbreaking it otherwise. 😡

This was not the case last year. I got my 1G in November of 2007. Upgraded to the 3G 16 GB in August of 2008. It was still $299.99 like everyone else with a new contract would be getting. Now they decided to play the game that other cellular companies play. I see no need right now for me to upgrade from the 3G as the changes just are not that groundbreaking to do so. Even with a front facing camera (I still don't know why people want this and can barely figure out those that think they need it). If you are in the market for a new phone, good for you, you get the hottest, current iPhone out there.

Also, to the people that are getting the e-mail about coming into the store to activate, I think this has to do with the sim card. You needed a different sim card for the 3G than the Edge sim card, with the faster internet speed, you might need a new sim card.

Does anyone know if you are getting charged more for the faster wireless web? Another Apple tax.
 
I went on Apple's website and went through the ordering process of the iphone 3GS and the site said i wasnt able to upgrade with a discount until 3/15/10 BUT i went through the order and the iPhone3GS came out as $399. I'm confused... shouldn't it of been the $700 or something?

can anybody help me here? why does that not seem right?

I've thought about doing this since I still own the original iPhone, but I've looked into T-Mobile's fees and they aren't any better than ATT. And T-Mobile is the only provider you can move to right, doesn't Sprint and Verizon use a different protocol?

VOIP is great, but you always gotta be in WiFi, and you still pay for it through some provider, right?

ok i purchase my iphone3g last year when it was released, i had a bit of delay with delivery because i bought a defect and waited for replacement which came 22july2008.

i would like to buy an iphone 3gs, so i went to apples page an got this :

"We can offer you an iPhone at the full retail price. On 07/22/2009, you may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade. "

AT&T's web page said :

"You can take advantage of our no commitment pricing at a participating retail sales location. You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 07/22/2009. More Details: Equipment discounts are available from time to time based on a number of factors: service tenure, spending levels, payment history, usage practices, and other factors."

So does this mean on 22Jul2009 I can get an iPhone 3GS 32GB for $299? $499? any clarification would be much appreciated!
 
Think I'll wait....

Frankly the extra 16gb, video capture and compass aren't worth it with the price O2 are asking for.

The 16 gb 3G I've got now is more than enough for me and with the free 3.0 upgrade, I think the phone is still good till the contract expires and I can get a cheaper upgrade then.

Sorry but £280 quid to buy into a new contract just so I can tell which way is North isn't good enough.....

And then what do you do when you're up to a 5-year contract? You're paying now or you're paying later, that's all it is. Would you really want 3 more years of commitment to AT&T? And, worse, then be forced to stick with AT&T if you lose your phone.
 
Baddddd move Apple - your letting the greedy telco's screw up the game...

Basically instead of buying this new iphone as an upgrade from o2 they are forcing me to the wait until the end of the stupid 18 month contract--but at that point I may as well cancel my contract and wait another 6 months until the next iphone comes out and start again...cos I'm not gonna do a rolling upgrade in January...

DUMB!!! The 12 month rolling upgrade was gonna be a money pit guaranteed winner for them both - seems like they're screwing that up...

Just let me upgrade to the 32MB and renew my contract for £299 please and I'll do it...don't and your just losing out on business - simple as that...
