I have a FAN number from my employer but I was never eligible for any type of discount on the iPhone plans at all. At least that's what AT&T told me when I first purchased mine.

I've skimmed the thread and can't seem to find a direct answer (though 600 posts are a lot to skim/search).

iPhone or iPhone 3G? The 3G can get the discount (excluding texting), whereas the iPhone cannot.

I can upgrade to the 3GS on 7/29/09 for $399 (one year upgrade price, extends contract two years). However, I'm thinking I will pay the full, no commitment price now of $599 and get it around 6/20/09.
I bought my 3G as a refurb for $249 and probably can ebay it for about $300, so I'm $250 in the hole to buy the 3GS now, and $50 if I wait until 7/29. However, I'd be eligible for the full discount next July, with probably even a more significant hardware upgrade and at least break even after ebaying the 3GS.

current customer and the upgrade price is a slap in the face. It just squeezes the current customer base while new customers get in cheaper...I hate AT&T and will do anything to move..btw the signal quality is the worse..much worse than verizon...maybe its jail break time and get a sim card and say screw it😱

Have you not looked at how much TELCOMS charge for the miniscule amount of data transferred in an sms message? If they weren't in cahoots, it would be criminal.
And your car analogy is way off. Car prices don't increase every year for the same model. Furthermore, they take trade-ins.

I am a bit confused at how so many people are blown away by the upgrade price
As many others have said, what did people think was going to happen when they signed the 2-year contract last year?
I bought the original iPhone and the 3G iPhone the first days they came out but, when I got the 3G at a sub price, I understood the next phone would come a good bit more $$$ wise.
It stinks but that is what happens with items like this.
I don't have the money to upgrade so I won't and that is just what happens. You get what you can afford.
I guess the only positive could be SO MANY people getting angry and thus causing a price drop but I wouldn't hold my breath

I talked with Premier CS she claimed it should take effect as soon as I upgrade. We will see though.

I would think so. My FAN number is already applied. When I log in to pay my bill it has the FAN number up in the corner, so I image any changes would probably take effect right away.

It depends on if AT&T likes you. If you pay on time every month, etc then it's $499
This is a bad business decision on the part of Apple and ATT. They will lose a lot of money by not selling the 3Gs at a reasonable price to existing 3G owners.

18 months if you pay less than 99 dollars a month, it is 12 months if you pay >$99 a month. 24 months if you pay less than 50...
Holy crap! Your discounted price of $499 IS a discount! AT&T is graciously offering those of you who are LOCKED IN (read it folks -- you are locked into a 2 year contract) a discounted price of $499 for the 32GB model instead of $699! Thats not bad if you have to have the latest greatest phone.
I got news for many of you -- ANY carrier will do the same thing, and almost every single phone is subsidized in some way/shape or form. Just happens to be the first iPhone was not. So -- I waited and skipped on the 3G phone and am happily ordering my new 3GS for $199. w00t. Being familiar with cellular providers (which my only assumption from reading these pages of endless complaints, many of you must not be...)... I know that in getting this great discount price on my phone, that I'm stuck with it for 2 years (no biggie)... and then I'll be able to get the iPhone 3GS version 3 (I'll skip the next version)... AT&T is doing nothing wrong in their pricing or contracts (except for those who are getting strange quotes for different end dates or eligability dates -- argue them on that)...
The point is painfully obvious - if you purchased an iPhone 3G, you now are locked into a 2 year contract... for those who didn't or are not currently in a 2-yr contract, we can purchase the iPhone 3GS and get locked in ourselves (but in exchange for a hefty discount on the hardware). Read your contracts, stop wining like spoiled babies and for heavens sake -- its not AT&T's fault nor is this sneaky behavior. Verizon Wireless does the same thing for brand new phones. Those still locked into a contract don't get the latest greatest tech for the cheapest price.
Someone close this thread else we'll get 400 pages of useless complaining.

More than likely you are paying $499. If you go to the apple website and click on iphone you can type in your iphone info and it will tell you what you will be paying if you purchase now as well as the date that you will qualify for the new contract/upgrade pricing.

I'm stuck... I'm a Gen 1'er and I don't know if I should upgrade this year or wait one more year.
If they would have included the following today I would have jumped instantly:
front facing camera with iChat integration.
Draft-N wifi.
MMS at launch (Bad AT&T!)
Tethering at launch (Again at&t)
Better pricing for service.... Are we sensing a weak link in the chain yet???
I'm not really in desperate need of 3G since I am always around enough wifi locations that Internet speeds are never an issue. GPS would be nice that's all.
I just don't know.
