I don't understand why everyone is so shocked to here that existing iPhone users will have to pay $200 more dollars to upgrade. Every single cell phone carrier require you to pay extra if you want to upgrade mid-contract. It should be no surprise that the iPhone is no exception.

Would you care to point out the confirmation of a 5-year exclusivity? I've never seen anything on that. It runs through Mid-2010, and AT&T is negotiating to extend that. No agreement has been reached for an extension to my knowledge.
I'm kind of dissapointed with the lack of new design features but I'm still going to upgrade to 16gb white model mainly because my 8gb black is full and I need a bigger size 🙂

You are totally right on. People who want to be on the bleeding edge of technology will always bleed money. It's expected and it's been like that from the days of the ENIAC. I paid close to a thousand dollars for my first cell phone, it weighed so much that it had a shoulder strap and was too big to fit under the drivers seat...and it only made phone calls.
I think if the "S" in the new iPhone stands for anything, it means the new "Standard" for other phones to try and beat.
Interestingly enough, some people might not consider those worthwhile upgrades. For my uses, I'm more interested in features rather than performance since I have a 2g and I'm quite happy with it's performance, 2 years later.
The video feature is silly to get worked up over as a great upgrade. My first cell phones, many, many moons ago had video.
The slightly better camera? Do people really use their cell phone as a camera? Taking a shot now and then, but a real camera? I would assume that most techies on here shoot with a DSLR and the times they need a shot on the run, it probably is more of a "oo look at this!" rather than a style/composition/shot to be printed out. 32 gbs? There are plenty of people that don't use the max capacity because they don't need it, just as many people that have used many generations of ipods do not use the max capacity.
Faster connection? That is always a good upgrade.
Keep in mind I'm playing the devil's advocate a bit, but to say that some people "will never be happy" is a major brush off to everyone else that really doesn't care if their phone doubles as a camera or can hold their entire music collection for emergencies.
Personally, a front facing camera, while not incredible, would have been convenience for video chatting with loved ones without having to sit at my computer.
As an AT&T customer, I can't tether yet, or at least not for a fortune when the time comes ( I know that's not Apple's decision).
So while the iPhone is a great product (I still LOVE my 2g sans case that is all beaten and durable as all heck), this is a huge upgrade over the 3g?
I'll GLADLY take the original 3g at $99 now, thank you very much 🙂
oo! as for the $200 dollar upgrade price...companies have been doing that long, long, long before the iphone was around! 🙄

However, I would have liked to see Apple do different colored cases (like the iPod Nano - Chromatic), a bit disappointed that didn't happen. Otherwise, the 16GB Model will be my choice. Now all I have to wait for is to see the pricing Vodafone Australia comes up with. 😎

Only if you own an original iPhone 1st gen do you get the subsidized new contract pricing.
Here's my two cents.
I understand the deal with getting out 3G's for a cheaper price. That said, my one year old $199 8 gig 3G is now $100 dollars cheaper a year later. Not a big deal, but still...
With that, I'm a day one original iPhone buyer and a day one 3G iPhone buyer.
I've paid over $700 dollars for those two phones (again, only to have the prices drop SIGNIFICANTLY over the course of a year OR LESS). Plus nearly $100 a month for the past 24 months to keep the phone on and able to make calls. Plus $200 for the past two years for MobileMe.
I've signed a 2 year contract with AT&T in late 2006 and had one of those Motorola iTunes phones. Then, re-upped in June of 2007 for the first iPhone, and re-upped again last July for the 3G. I've been a good customer to both Apple and AT&T.
Again, I understand the contract I signed last year.
But, to be told that I have to wait 6 months to save $200, is completely not worth it to me. I'm more than willing... MORE THAT WILLING... to pay with cash, today or next Friday, for the 16 gig 3GS. But I will not pay $200 in December. Why?
Because I know, as well as the rest of you do, that Apple WILL announce a new phone at around this time next year. So why shell out the money for a phone when I can just wait a year and not have to deal with this hassle?
I'm stupid enough to buy a new phone every year. But not every six months.
So, in not allowing us early adapters to get a new phone next week for the same price as the others, Apple and AT&T lose out.
And, I'm sure, AT&T will NOT be the exclusive carrier of the iPhone by this time next year. And, again, in doing so, they will lose out on a LARGE chunk of their customer base. People, if given the choice, will not keep their iPhones at AT&T.
So, now, I ask, is AT&T willing to lose out on my $2400+ a year over the next two years (and perhaps longer when new iPhones come out?) AND to lose out on my $200+ NEXT WEEK for a new phone? Seems like bad business to me.
And on Apple's part... I'm paying for MobileMe. And now I would be able to upload video from my phone. But now it looks like I won't be able to take part in that feature, which sucks. App's will be created for JUST the 3GS, which they won't be able to sell me, so they lose out on that and their developer base will lose out on money to be able to produce more and more apps. It's a lose/lose for them to not offer 3G users a cheaper (but perhaps not CHEAPEST) price.
Again, I know I signed a contract. And I think I'd be willing to pay $299 for a 16 gig next week. Maybe they can't give me the full subsidized price, but they could give me and US a BREAK on the price, especially for those of us a year into out 3G contracts.
I'm not asking for anything FREE, I'm just asking for a fair shake. There are a ton of us loyal Apple users who would GLADLY pay for this new phone next week... and yet, we're left in the dark.

This is a screenshot from my process. It just say $50 for my pricing plan. No details on what plan that is or what it includes. And I didn't select it, it was automatically done for me.
So the way it's looking, I'm making a $20 jump per month by upgrading.
Anyone have any more info on this plan?

The $20 per month is likely the subsidy for ATT eating part of the new iPhone cost.

I know I said the exact same thing last year, but I really am considering buying an iPhone this year. If they drop the iPhone 3G (current model) to a reasonable price, then I'll take it. I just don't know how my iPod touch will take that, though. 😉
The $30 is the normal, standard 3G plan. The unlimited text is 20, but you have a choice of different text plans... from NOTHING (but it's .20 a text if you receive any) to 5 bucks for 200 and so on and so forth.
Standard stuff.

the way phil schiller announced it as a feature of the 3gs and its being pushed on the apple site as a 3gs. its also never been mentioned as part of the 3.0 update. im pretty sure 3g phones arent getting this one

Oh, hmm, that pic is showing what the $50 breaks down. 30 of it is for the data the other 20 is for the texting. It doesn't include your voice plan at all.

Did you just wake up? It took you over 500 posts to get that?
Those prices are for short-term, non-eligible upgrades. That means you are paying full price for the phone.

Well after hearing the news today I will just hold on to my 3G IPhone 16 Gig. till next year. My contract will be up in two weeks and ATT told me that I can pay per month without a contract. My old Ipshone was so screwed up last year that ATT and Apple upgraded me for free and I kept my original contract to boot.
Since the new software will upgrade my 3G then there is no purpose in getting the new Iphone S. I will wait for the new IPhone 4G which will come out next year sometime. I just wish Apple would have a removable battery and a Mini SD Slot like the HTC and Blackberry. Now then that would be the ultimate phone.
I can't wait till the Tom Tom Map system comes out in the next two months. This will be the most anticipated map system for the Iphone.

NOTE: AT&T subscribers folks that got a discount on the texting plan are no longer getting it. This means that the 15-35% off that people were getting are having the texting plan removed from that discount.
