Apple Announces iPhone 3G S, Launching June 19th

I am a 3G iPhone user since the day that they came out. I lost my phone around Christmas time and purchased a new one to make up for my lost one.

My price for the 32GB iPhone 3GS? $699 WITH a 2 year contract?

Is that right? I have to sign a 2 year contract on top of paying the rape price?
 
It's this sense of entitlement that people have that cause them to whine. They don't want to take responsibility for the two year contract they signed and now we have all these posts. You'll probably want a bailout too just to pay for the new phone you can't afford huh? Well, remember, there are consequences to any action whether good or bad and you can't choose them.
I for one, will be happy to get my first iPhone since I've been eligible to upgrade for the last 10 months.

I had the same idea of just paying the early termination fee and getting the new phone. i wonder if I can transfer the number to a prepaid phone or another carrier, cancel AT&T, then buy the new iPhone and transfer the number back.
 
Quikest way to get one....

So i am leaving on my honeymoon on the 20th.
I pre-ordered with a Deliver By date as June 19th, however I don't know if i trust that I need to have a phone before I leave the next day.

Do you think i'll have better luck picking it up in the store on the 19th? but then again, i wouldn't have time to wait in lines

what do you think?
 
Broken wifi on 3g

The wifi is busted on my 3G which is under warranty till November. I've done multiple restores, wipe and restore, reset network settings, start from a "fresh" not from back-up restore and it is still just unable to join networks, even a factory setting unlocked airport express.

At what point do you people think they would swap it for a new one?

True, but i know apple wants those long lines, and huge sales numbers especially with the Palm Pre just getting released....no subsidized pricing is going to keep at least half the 3G owners on the sidelines.

• Draft-N wifi.
• MMS at launch (Bad AT&T!)

I'm not really in desperate need of 3G since I am always around enough wifi locations that Internet speeds are never an issue. GPS would be nice that's all.

Another 1st gen owner here, and I've been thinking of this for the past month or so. Now that I see what is being released, it's a relatively easy decision for me to NOT upgrade at this time. If only the case material was different, I'd consider it. But the fact that it's still the shiny plastic that had all sorts of cracking problems in the 3G (I haven't read anything saying the cracking has been stopped, so forgive me if this isn't true), makes me want to stay far, far away. I live 2.5 hours away from the nearest Apple Store, and I would be aggravated beyond words if I had to make constant exchanges. I moved to a more rural area 6 months ago (though I kept my phone # from my previous state), and AT&T doesn't even have 3G coverage here, so my unique situation compels me to take a pass on this one. I'll hold out for the hope (assuming I don't move yet again to an area w/ good AT&T coverage) that AT&T loses their exclusivity, and that another carrier will offer the iPhone sometime in 2010

If you want a replacement 3G, you can go get it now under warranty. If you are thinking you'd get a GS to replace the 3G, it won't happen since they will continue to sell the 3G versions.

Unless the OP has a 16GB unit, which means refub most likely. But there is an ever so slight chance of a new 3Gs
 
The price is $399 for existing customers if you want one this month. Otherwise, you will have to wait until January for a further discount, or wait until the month you bought the phone when your contract expires.

Adding to that -- I had my original 2G iPhone (4GB model!!!) swapped out/replaced and I've always been given 4GB models as replacements. Even as recently as a few months ago -- so rest assured, Apple will have 8GB and 16GB 3G replacements for everyone as to avoid giving you anything extra ;-)

I got news for many of you -- ANY carrier will do the same thing, and almost every single phone is subsidized in some way/shape or form. Just happens to be the first iPhone was not. AT&T is doing nothing wrong in their pricing or contracts (except for those who are getting strange quotes for different end dates or eligability dates -- argue them on that)...

The point is painfully obvious - if you purchased an iPhone 3G, you now are locked into a 2 year contract... for those who didn't or are not currently in a 2-yr contract, we can purchase the iPhone 3GS and get locked in ourselves (but in exchange for a hefty discount on the hardware). Read your contracts, stop wining like spoiled babies and for heavens sake -- its not AT&T's fault nor is this sneaky behavior. Verizon Wireless does the same thing for brand new phones. Those still locked into a contract don't get the latest greatest tech for the cheapest price.

Someone close this thread else we'll get 400 pages of useless complaining.

Wait until next year when the new model comes out with cool new software and hardware, and guess who will be whining?? YOU! And guess whose contract will be up for renewal next year and will get their hands on the new iphone in 2010 🙂

On the contrary -- I realize that I won't be eligible... and thats fine. Many of the people on this forum sound like its their God-given right to a cheap phone. Its simply shocking. I'll be quite content with my new one and come next year, I'll oogle the new one but will patiently wait out my contract...
 
I'm trying to look at the two-year contract/subsidizing thing as a built-in way of AT&T allowing me to save money I was otherwise going to spend on an iPhone upgrade.

I'll juice over the 3GS and try and wait patiently for next summer. It shouldn't be too hard since I'm still excited about 3.0 and also Snow Leopard.

I agree. The point of the subsidy is to lower the upfront cost of the device by spreading it among the 2 years of the contract. AT&T owes iPhone 3G owners nothing in regards to a discount on upgrading the the 3G S. Switching from a a 3G to a 3G S is no different than switching between any other phones within the 2 year contracted time.

Exactly -- a great way of thinking about this. Plus, these features are really not all that groundbreaking. ...nor were those in the 3G phone. Incrementally, each iPhone is only so impressive making an upgrade every 2 years a very viable option. The upgrades of the 3GS in addition to those from the 3G model make a jump from the original iPhone a very nice upgrade for me. If I had the 3G however, I doubt I would dump the money into a 3GS... now the 3GS2.0 -- that should be a nice upgrade for current 3G folks 🙂.
 
really think about it like this...sell your iphone 3g on ebay for $4-500, buy a new one june 19. You basically come out even here, you do extend your contract two years though. but you can do the same next year

Sticking with my 1st GEN. And I was all set to upgrade. The features just didn't cut it for me.

Guess I didn't have the money to spend but, man that 100 dollar credit they gave us is burning a hole in my pocket.

Thanks , you annoyed me at first, but I understand your just holding the company line. You know its actually kind of frustrating being an iphone developer. Its a whole different set of prorities. not mention even though I've been a developer forever, objective-c is not the easiest language to deal with. It kind of grows on you.

But anyway, my kid will be delighted. We will add a line, and if I have to add the family talk plan. Just reserved the phone at my local apple store .🙂

On the positive note, we will have all 3 generations we can test with.

1.5 g (deactivated, wi-fi only)
3.0g
3.0gs coming

So better for my customers too.

Hope you don't get beat up too much. you know the thing about killing the messager.. 🙂

I camped out too, and bought mine on release date...and am told that I won't qualify for the discount until 12/14/2009. WTF! I'm sorry, but they should give the discount and *extend* your contract another two years. Even though it might be acceptable to do what they are doing, to me it smacks of just bad form.....

No...not a mistake.. mine says the same thing.... bought mine 7/23/08 and can upgrade 7/23/09.........
