Ditto. And is this supporting cellular 7.2 instead of 3.6?

I want them as well. The keynote made a big point of saying the 3Gs is faster doing everything. I wonder how this is accomplished? And faster than what? Compared to current 3G running firmware 2.2.1? Or 3G running firmware 3.0? They did not exactly say whether or not the current 3G would just as fast, and if they kept RAM and CPU the same, then it very well may be.

not to interrupt this lively , useless discussion. But did anyone figure out what this means.

I take it it doesn't guarantee you a phone, just maybe less hassle at point of sale. still need to stand in long lines.

I wonder what Apple thinks about all this? They are the ones who face to lose the most. Remember, one less person able to get upgrade pricing means one less iPhone Gs sold by Apple. And, we all know how Apple likes to brag about number of iPhone units sold. Poor iPhone 3Gs sales are not going to look good on their slide presentations. We saw how poorly the original iPhone sold compared to the 3G with no subsidy, so we should expect similar sales for the 3Gs (with no subsidy). I have a feeling Apple will step up in a few months once they realize new 3Gs sales are not quite media newsworthy.
They will just not break it out. We all should realize that the $99 3G will become the bulk of sales for Apple. That is one step closer to RAZR-free.

#1 - I'm pretty peeved that a $99 bill would have gotten me eligibility in July, but my $97 bill per month doesn't. There'll be a phone call.

#2 - You people who keep saying OMG OMG YOU HAVE NO ARGUMENTS GET OVER IT - you're wrong. There are no LEGAL arguments, and that is correct.

There are other arguments, and I support most of them. See below.

I find it odd that the cancelation is seen as being a huge bill. Last I checked it is only 200 bucks. That seems like a small price to pay to get out of paying 2400 over the life of the contract.

The last page of the registration app said that if you don't pick the phone up on Friday, it's placed back into general inventory, so I think it is being held. I still don't have an answer to my account owner question, though.

But, how many 3Gs are going to be sold at this point? Why wouldn't these people have just bought one before? Just the $100 difference (considering people will have to pay well-over $2000 during the life of the contract)? I suppose the people who will continue to buy the iPhone are the uniformed customers who are "walk-ins" looking for a new iPhone, and did not even consider buying an iPhone before going to the store. They'll see the iPhone being $99, start to drool, and make an impulse buy, not realizing the implications of the expensive contract. This is like buying a Dodge neon that runs on premium gasoline.

hm? i didn't mention a 'huge bill'? do you mean the ETF?

16GB Black ordered. I'm upgrading from a 8GB original iPhone. I was tempted to go with the 32GB, worrying primarily about how big any turn-by-turn apps will be, but figured I'd manage with "just" twice what I have now. It'll be good enough for two years. :)

You shouldve gotten the 32gb. 16 gigs fills up quickly. I have the 16gig 3G and it's full all the time with apps and such.

Waited in line on launch day for both 1st gen and 3G. Now ATT wants to hose me on an upgrade to the 3GS? They can suck my cojones!! I'll wait and see if Apple and ATT decide to give us current owners a break. If not, I'll be on the sidelines along with every single current 3G iPhone owner that I know....

Wait....I am an existing ATT customer with a iPhone 3G and I have to pay an extra $200 for this? Not right at all....

So, now that the iPhone is getting close in features to every other smart-phone (but still sans front camera for video calls, and with only 3meg camera, when others get up to 12megs,) they are asking $700 for the 32megs version for existing AT&T users!?

Oh, and plus being locked into anoter 2 years contract with AT&T!

Is this a joke?

No another iPhone for me, at this price. I'll be looking at the new HTCs with Android. F... Apple and f... AT&T!

AT&T laid out at least $200 for each subsidized iphone 3G and they want their money back before they give you the benefit of a new, subsidized phone. Sometimes this happens before 24 months. Mine for instance says i'm eligible in January to upgrade, only 18 months after my upgrade to the 3G. it depends on the cost of your monthly bill (i don't have the exact numbers).

We are totally spoiled in the US. We want free phones and "new customer" pricing. Well, when we got involved with the cell company, we bound ourselves to another, very American ideal, a CONTRACT. i'm not on att or apple's sides, i just dont see the point of whining. I too would love the 3GS at the subsidized price, but i upgraded to 3G less than a year ago. they won't do it. they won't do it for any other phone, why the iPhone? We pay more in data/monthly rates? Blackberry users and even Palm treo users also pay $30 extra per month for data access.

Just ordered from ATT Store

Just placed order on my Iphone 3G s 32 gb

As usual the ATT corporate hadn't got around to telling the store folks about the pre-orders. After about 10 mins we got it straighten out, great attitude at our local store in Millington TN, employees and manager were very helpful.:)

$299.00 plus sales tax:D:D:D

edu discount?

Edu discount when pre-order? I tried and the only thing that changed is the "iPhone - AppleCare Protection Plan" was $69.99 down to $55. Anyone got something else?

The way I see it, they're subsidizing your voice plan by $200 and your data plan by $200. If you are completely out of contract, you get $400 off the retail price of $599/$699 so $199/$299. If you're under contract with a regular phone (voice only), you get $200 off so $399/$499. If you're under contract for an iPhone 3G (which is voice and data), they won't give you any discount.

I think a reserved phone is a reserved phone. But, yes, you'll still have to wait in line which is why I had mine delivered. That, plus I want to have the honors of busting open the box.

There are no Edu or gov't employee discounts for the iPhone. ATT did offer 35% cash back on live.com (now bing) but that deal is over. Maybe they'll repeat it once the GS hype-a-thon has run out later this summer.

Mine still won't give me the delivery option. It's really pissing me off.

Well, when the carrier is eating some of the cost so you don't have to spend $700 for a phone, why should you expect them to eat the costs again a year later when you have a 2 year agreement?

Im not buying that for one second. That iPhone probably cost 50 dollars to make. AT&T doesn't even offer the full capabilities of the phone and we pay $100+ a month for it. Get out of here with that sorry logic.

The 3GS is/was the reason for the rest of Apple to be slipping?

Pathetic.

I agree 100% with your comment.

Maybe next year they will learn!?!?

Just sold my iphone 3G for $350.00 on eBay and purchased an iphone 3gs for $399.00. I almost broke even, but I'm a lot happier now, earlier yesterday I learned about my upgrade date 12/12/09!!!! You would think that Apple and AT&T would handle their the release a lot better, I had to go and change my text messaging plan all around in order to order two iphone's last night... I have no received my confirmation email regarding my two purchases but I took down the order numbers and the delivery date is set for June, 19!!!!

So here are the cell frequencies and battery life of the 3G and 3GS from apple's site. How is it that the 3G model got less hours of talk time on 3G service than 2G service and now the 3GS says it gets more talk time on 3G service than 2G service. I think it's a mistake on the 3GS specs.

Also, very pissed that there seems to be no bump to 7.2 cell frequency on the 3GS.

Very well said. It isnt JUST a phone, it always has been much more than that & no matter how much other companies try, they just cant match Apple iPhone. Iphone & Itunes, the availabilty of software updates & apps & movies & so much more!

On a Network which can hardly support any of the features. My entire train ride to work is filled with 2 bars here, no edge there, No signal here, blah blah. But my buddy next to me... his Storm always has full bars. So its either the network or the phone. I guess when the iPhone is finally available on other networks we'll find out.

Voice Commands in 3.0

I have the 3.0 GM build (from the developer program), and the voice commands are not included. They are only for the 3GS. This is really disappointing to me because I feel that the 3G hardware is capable of handling this. Voice commands have been on phones for years with much less capable processors. I'm hoping maybe Apple will offer this app on the app store for iphone (1st gen) and 3g users.

There is no "7.2 cell frequency." That is just nonsense. Now if you mean 7.2Mbps HSDPA? That is a feature of the 3G S. Arguably, that's one of its main features in fact. Did you bother watching the keynote or even reading one of the 10 billion live blogs of it?

Apple's all about user experience. Something you might have noticed with the existing hardware is that, if you wait a long time while the phone's inactive then try to use the remote... nothing. The reason is that the circuit that monitors the inline remote signal is disabled after a delay (surely for battery life.)

My guess here (and yes I'm just guessing at this point) is that the 3G S handles this scenario differently, providing a "complete" experience of this feature and apple doesn't want confused people calling about how their voice control is broken because it doesn't respond after the phone is sitting in their pocket for 5 minutes unused.

Considering Apple's similar motivation for things like no background apps, etc. I'm sticking with this theory for now.
