I don't see a reason why the plan prices have to change at all. Do you really expect the plans to jump up in price?

so im interested in this gps thing.. will this feature turn the iphone into something similar to other gps' units like garmin or tomtom?

the US will be the first country to get the iphone, no doubt about it.

so the people in australia will see it the 12th :D

To all hopeful Brits:

http://www.o2.co.uk/

see "Only on O2" on flash banner...

So no SIM Free. Not that there could have been anyway, with the exclusivity contract Apple have with 02

The maximum $199 price translates to £101.01 at today's rate -- you then have to add VAT (sales tax) so £119 or £129 for the 8GB version?

I bought one of the last 16GB versions and activated, jailbroke and unlocked it to run on a non-Apple specified network provider. No regrets as I bought it knowing full well that the 3G version was due in 3 to 4 months time.

The phone will be upgradeable to the new 2.0 software, but I am not looking to do this until a new jailbreak/unlock solution is available. Once this is done, I may get the V2 phone for the "extras" and pass the V1 to one of my offspring. I don't miss visual voicemail, and I'm sure I'll be the poorer for not being able to access the AppStore, but I have everything I need right now on my V1 phone.

I still have my network supplied Nokia N95 which I use as a pocket camera/video recorder for my eBay items. The N95 suffered low battery levels, signal drop outs, rubbish internet experience, dodgy syncing with iCal & Address Book and I never used the built-in GPS because (a) you had to slide the phone open (the GPS chip is located under the keypad) and (b) even then, it would take anything up to 15 minutes to grab a signal.

To those who keep saying "No 32Gig is a deal breaker" Huh? I've got 600 songs on mine, 5 DVD movies 9 other videos, 150 pix, 300 contacts and I've still got 4.92 gig left. What are you people expecting to put on your phones? Of the 5 DVD movies, I've only watched one of them on the phone. Am I looking for to the App store, you betchya! But those things can't take up that much space, can they?

Why do yo NEED 32gigs? Are you planning to overthrow the planet? Thus creating a social hierarchy based not on gender, or skin color or $$$ but on iPhone gigabites? At the bottom, those with well, no iphone, then the 4 gigers, 8 gigers, 16 gigers and those supreme rulers of all the 32 gigers!

You're an idiot

How do you like that blanket statement? People have different media habits than you, can you imagine that!

It does have real GPS, just like nokia phones. the cell reception compliments the satellite signal.

no, sorry, from the apple website it says: "assisted GPS", which probably means that you need a cell antenna to triangulate your position... could be wrong though^.. I hope..

it's not thinner! you might have to change the news (source: apple.com specifications)

The max thickness point of the phone is slightly larger, but the average thickness does in fact appear to be smaller due to the tapered back.

Still no iPhone for Iceland... one of the most developed cell phone markets on the planet. Even frickin Liechtenstein is getting it now! As if this wasn't bad enough, Iceland doesn't even exist according to the world map from the keynote. This feels like being punched in the stomach!

Why Apple? Why!?

For all those complaining about no video chat, how many countries is that really ubiquitous in? Maybe Japan, South Korea? And how many phones is that even available on right now?
It's not economically feasible yet to do video chat in most places because video on most networks is pretty slow...look at TV on cell phones, pretty lousy. The reason places like Japan & SK pull it off is because those countries are a lot smaller so less area to cover/build out. Speaking from a U.S. point of view, I'm guessing those carriers also don't impose the same red-tape restrictions that U.S. users face, hence one of the reasons they are so far ahead from a technology standpoint.

Bottom line, when the rest of the world catches up to 4G/Wimax, etc, you'll probably see more phones with video conferencing.

I was reading an excerpt from Apple that was posted on another website, it stated:

iPhone 3G will be available in the US on July 11 for a suggested retail
price of $199 (US) for the 8GB model and $299 (US) for the 16GB model in
both Apple and AT&T's retail stores and requires a new two year contract
with AT&T for qualifying customers. iPhone 2.0 software will be available
on July 11 as a free software update via iTunes(R) 7.7 or later for all
iPhone customers. For further information about iPhone 3G pricing and
availability in the US and internationally, visit
http://www.apple.com/iphone.

I do believe the 199 is with a "NEW" account activation subsidie... meaning, if you already have an IPhone, you'll be paying more...

Hopefully I'm wrong..

They have been pretty good abvout this sort of thing recently. I think present owners may get a little slack.

Otherswise there's going to be a problem :mad::D

no, sorry, from the apple website it says: "assisted GPS", which probably means that you need a cell antenna to triangulate your position... could be wrong though^.. I hope..

A-GPS -is- real GPS. It only uses the assistance when necessary to compensate for a poor GPS satellite signal and/or offload some of the calculations to an external server. Having the assistance is better than not having it.

the mms problem has already been tackled. I now email my pics to my friends text address. (phonenumber@mms.att.net) and he gets it as a text message. I'm sure most of you know this already.

Thanks. No, I didn't know that. Does this work with all mobile numbers, and are you able to store the text address in your Address Book for convenience?

It isn't thinner.

But it does come with a paper clip, er, SIM ejector.

Endgadget is reporting that it'll be $30 for the 3G plan (+ $40 for voice):

On AT&T unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, on top of voice plans starting at $39.99 a month. Unlimited 3G data for business users will be $45 a month, on top of voice. No word on how many text messages they're tossing in for that price. There's a minimum two-year agreement, but we're not positive what that'll look like for those currently enslaved to an AT&T contract -- you could be looking at a solid four years of time if you just took the plunge.

Macrumors Read!!

TULSA, OK I will be waiting in July 11th can we get a city who is going to be in line forum going!!!!!!!!

Two questions:

is the $199 and $299 pricing flat out no matter what?

and

When they say being shipped july 11th they mean being released to stores that day too right?

no, sorry, from the apple website it says: "assisted GPS", which probably means that you need a cell antenna to triangulate your position... could be wrong though^.. I hope..

Assisted GPS is "real GPS". It's the type of GPS they use on phones, where if you can't get good satellite signal it backs it up with antenna data to find you, or when you're outside it allows for quicker searching of your position.

Did anyone notice that the UK iPhone page has had a second update today?

I looked immediately after the announcement and the page had been updated with iPhone 3G information. The page included links to the O2 and CPW online stores. There was also a link to 'Buy' the iPhone 3G at the AppleStore. The O2 and CPW links took you to their respective iPhone (original) pages. The AppleStore link just reloaded the page you were on.

The UK iPhone 3G page now lists no online sources for the iPhone 3G. They only provide links to find your nearest O2 and CPW outlet.

I'm worried that this indicates the end of contract free purchasing. Are we now going to be forced into signing the contract in the shop prior to getting hold of the iPhone 3G? Am I paranoid? Could it simply be that the online store links have been removed until the iPhone 3G is available?

I'm not sure if Zibri can make ZiPhone magic an iPhone 3G out of thin air.... yet!

I need reassuring

This is the end of contract free iPhone..... when you buy one, you have to sign a contract..... it's Apple's and the network providers new attack plan to prevent unlocked phones from surfacing. (i'm not saying that you can't unlock it.... it's just there would be little point as you still have to pay for you phone contract)

http://www.o2.co.uk/

see "Only on O2" on flash banner...

O2 haven't updated their website yet as far as I can see. Flash banner is currently advertising O2 broadband... but it may be a random selection.

We already know it's exclusive, so no sim-free.. all other possibilities are still open though.

O2 aren't known for their cheapness.. I'm bracing myself for the same crappy deals (possibly free phone on the £75/month deal).
