nano ??

I'm wondering what is going to happen with the iPod Nanos,
they have the same price (199$) as an iPhone, who is stilgoing to buy a Nano if you could get an amazing Phone and ipod,.... for the same price ???

Hope they will drop prices :)

That's correct. Well remembered and well spotted.

Well according to the AT&T press release the phone has a STARTING price of $199 WITH a 2 year contract. This also includes higher data rates of $30/month (instead of $20).

No idea how this translates to existing users ... we might be forced to sign a new contract *shudder* or pay a higher price for the phone *face palm*

I hate AT&T as much as the next person (and I am currently a non-contracted customer of theirs).:p

That being said, $600 for an unlocked 16 GB?!? Those days are over.

And since AT&T's 3-G is not compatible with T-Mobile's, I have to think that the value of unlocked (or otherwise) 1G phone has just been reduced by 80%.

Not everyone needs the latest/greatest.

I would think that the 3G, being sold by T-Mobile in Europe, is compatible.

Some people just want the iPhone, but can't because they like their existing contract (I have a T-Mobile plan that comes out to $25 less per month than the equivalent AT&T one) or don't want to pay the early cancellation fees.

Those people will still want an unlocked iPhone.

No ichat other features

Maybe Apple should think like a mobile 'phone producer, not a computer maker. The missing features are standard on all (?) 3g phones on sale in the UK. Unless you are an Apple nut, why would you buy an iPhone??

I guess I have to wait another year. Sad.

damn, so much for that then.

iTunes 7.7?

Idk if anyone else noticed this but on the tech specs page, it says that you need iTunes 7.7 or higher in order to sync the iPhone... I dont know about you but my iTunes is 7.6.2.... does that mean that there is a new version of iTunes coming out within the next month?

Mac system requirements
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later
iTunes 7.7 or later

Windows system requirements
PC with USB 2.0 port
Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
iTunes 7.7 or later

Exactly. I'm an existing user who's going to have to do one or the other, I'm guessing.

That's with any contract - I assume. Which means you can even do voice only...

AT&T to offer breakthrough iPhone 3G

TO: All Employees

AT&T today announced that we will be the exclusive U.S. provider of the iPhone 3G — set to debut Friday, July 11 in 8GB and 16GB models. Both will be available at AT&T stores and kiosks, and through our business sales teams. The new iPhone 3G will include:

* 3G broadband wireless, which gives customers a home broadband-like speed experience
* Business-class capabilities, including e-mail
* The ability for developers, including AT&T, to create customized consumer and business applications
* A new in-store activation process that should take just a few minutes

"The iPhone 3G will take mobile communications and computing to a whole new level by combining a terrific user interface with a great experience accessing the Internet and subscribers' favorite applications on our 3G wireless network at unsurpassed speeds," said Ralph de la Vega, president and chief executive officer of AT&T Mobility. "Combine our high-performance 3G broadband wireless network, the new iPhone's business-class capabilities and a starting price point of $199, and I expect we will continue to increase revenue per user, and attract customers who spend the most on wireless. The device is built, and priced, to sell."

The new iPhone harnesses the power of our 3G mobile broadband network, which offers download speeds of up to 1.4 Mbps, and is available today in 280 U.S. metro areas; by year-end, we plan to be in nearly 350 metro areas.

It will come with new business capabilities, including access to corporate e-mail and intranets. In addition, we have a catalog of hundreds of enterprise applications, and will work with Apple to enable many of these to work on iPhone 3G.

Our new agreement with Apple, which is consistent with traditional equipment manufacturer-carrier arrangements, eliminates revenue sharing, and we anticipate our new offers will drive increased sales volumes and revenues among data-centric customers. Our average monthly revenues per iPhone subscriber are nearly double the average of our subscriber base.

In the near term, we anticipate the new agreement will likely result in some pressure on margins and earnings, reflecting the costs of subsidized device pricing, which, in turn, is expected to drive increased subscriber volumes. We anticipate potential dilution to earnings per share from this initiative in the $0.10 to $0.12 range this year and next, with a 2008 adjusted consolidated operating income margin of approximately 24 percent and a full-year 2008 wireless OIBDA margin in the 39 to 40 percent range. As recurring revenue streams build without any further revenue sharing required, we expect the initiative to turn earnings-positive in 2010.

We also are working closely with Apple to roll out several new applications that take advantage of iPhone's advanced capabilities. We are finalizing a GPS-enabled application, our own YELLOWPAGES.COM mobile for the iPhone, which combines local search with social networking capabilities. In addition, we will work to certify many existing mobile applications for businesses, created in conjunction with third-party developers, for use on iPhone.

AT A GLANCE

With a two-year contract, the price of an 8GB iPhone 3G will be $199; the 16GB model will be priced at $299

Unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, in addition to voice plans starting at $39.99 a month

Unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for business users will be available for $45 a month, in addition to a voice plan

Voiceplans starting at $40 a month.
Unlimited data plans at $30 a month.

At $75+ a month the $199-$299 up front costs are the least of my concerns.

everyone keeps talking about ipod pricing being too high now that the iphone is $199, but thats with a contract activation, and then paying a minimum of $70 a month for a plan. So really after a couple months, that cheap iphone costs way more than any ipod would...

just buying the phone and not activating it seems unlikely, all evidence points towards a required activation upon purchase, so you are stuck paying more than ipods...

Apparently you've never used an IPhone if the only reason to get one for you is a front facing camera

Thanks!

Actually, when software 2.0 comes out, my friend is switching from T-Mobile (his contract is now just over) to AT&T... looks like these are the new AT&T iPhone plans... maybe a little lower now that Apple doesn't get a cut?

I think they're saying that it starts at 199 because there is also a 299 model available. It's the same language you see with cars. "Get the new XTerra starting at 18,000" or whatever, but then there are models going up to 27,000.

Seriously, Jobs said MAXIMUM when referring to those prices. Plus, i'm sure the press release would have had to specify if anything was subsidized (like other phone ads do), and then display the full retail price.

Thanks Apple for making me feel like a testbed, I pay about twice as much (which I don't mind) for an item that is now outdated (which again I don't mind). But what I do mind is those that waited are getting charged half the price for a phone with new features that I can't buy because of my contract!

Ah well, here's hoping O2 offer us an upgrade route :) I'll happily pay the $199 UK equivalent if they do, I just don't want to have them trap me with old tech on this one.

Mms

I don't get the big deal about the lack of MMS??? I personally don't (and don't know many people who do) use it because of the ridiculous cost (in the UK at least).... what's wrong with sending an email??? (just make sure all you're friends have iPhones or phones capable of displaying email attachments :))

The new iPhone looks great and after waiting year it's time to get on board. Front camera etc is not a deal breaker for me as it's mainly a phone! The main disappointment for me is no MMS, no pictures of my daughter sent as an MMS etc is a real shame, this sort of thing is why people use MMS and what people will miss, also in most plans it's 4 standard texts and if you've got hundreds included you'll never use them up.

Great new iPhone, though a front cam would have been awesome. Only problem now is enduring the wait until July 11... ugh!!

haha yea what brings a phone for 199 $ if the plan is like 90 euro which no one is gonna pay for

Would be better if it had video conferencing with camera next to proximity sensor. But battery probably wasnt up to it... :( I am really annoyed, should of sold my iPhone 1st Gen on eBay, stupid relying on apple to do anything to improve their customer relations like offer trade in on 1st gens. Anyway, i like the white one (most likely to be sold out within the first couple of minutes when released LOL. I think that the iPhone 2.0 firmware cancels out the bad points.

Boy, whats up with you people on thinking that Apple wants your trade in? They are "old Technology" that NOBODY wants anymore. Why don't you run down to Sears and see if they will take your refrigerator because you really like the new one they just came out with? OH - they won't! Bad customer relations!

when is the Apple Connection for MACS?

cause alll I read about today was the 'iPhone" ?

anyone (off course i'm being sarcastic what do you think?)

I personally think this is nothign at all.
