Apple has lost its commitemnt for its true followers and early adopters. No way to buy now (I think this is a first for them) and no deal for those of us who dropped $599 for the first iPhones.
Very disappointed.
You must not own a car...

Seeing as developers pay big $$$ to go to the conference in the first place (most on company time), they don't need consumer fluff. It seems as if Jobs was focusing on Developer related issues and not so much on the new
how in all hell does it mean that?? isn't that where they were sold last time? and yet everyone bought them without signing any contract..
I hope those of us who just bought the gen 1 phone will be given some sort rebate or coupon.
i think i'll be waiting for the 32gb version.
july 11th is my birthday, this makes perfect sense. Grab an iPhone at the apple store, swing by 7-11 and grab a free slurpee, excellent!
...the only thing that is curious about this announcement is why they have chosen to subvert the Black-as-Premium-Option that is in place with the MacBooks?
Surely, one thing following the other, the 8gb version should be white with a black option on the 16gb model.
Anyone else find this weird?
Before, you can just buy it online. The AT&T refurbs were sold online without activation as well.
Now, you HAVE TO GO TO A STORE. Plus, if available from AT&T online, you WILL HAVE TO GO through the activation process online.
These phones are SUBSIDIZED... no way $199 for a next generation iPhone without a subsidy.
This is a "developers conference" not a consumer conference.
so you bought your phone to impress others? You have a very strange outlook on life. Impress others by doing something amazing like charity work. Not by the phone you bought. One advantage of a white iPhone 3G over the 16GB in black is that people will know you have the larger capacity model. That's a cheaper way to impress people than, say, driving a huge car. Then again, the prices are so low now that it's gonna be harder to impress people by owning an iPhone at all.
maybe apple are putting the ipod touch in that 16/32 gb slot ?
