Apple has lost its commitemnt for its true followers and early adopters. No way to buy now (I think this is a first for them) and no deal for those of us who dropped $599 for the first iPhones.
Very disappointed.

You must not own a car...

10 months left on my contract with O2. Oh well, time to perhaps even iron out the few remaining kinks. I'll be all over this especially at the £149 I'm predicting it will sell at. Contract should cost me about the same.

how in all hell does it mean that?? isn't that where they were sold last time? and yet everyone bought them without signing any contract..

Before, you can just buy it online. The AT&T refurbs were sold online without activation as well.

Now, you HAVE TO GO TO A STORE. Plus, if available from AT&T online, you WILL HAVE TO GO through the activation process online.

These phones are SUBSIDIZED... no way $199 for a next generation iPhone without a subsidy.

Is there really no dock?

and I hope it's not subsidized. his steveness did not mention that in the keynote.

I hope those of us who just bought the gen 1 phone will be given some sort rebate or coupon.

It'd be REALLY nice if there was some sort of trade-in option. I bought the 16Gb on the day it came out in March, and was under the impression that 3G was a way off still. I understand the need for keeping things under wraps, but there is virtually no way that we can sell ours to upgrade.

I just hope reception is better....I know that's asking a lot from a phone...

Hmmm...

...the only thing that is curious about this announcement is why they have chosen to subvert the Black-as-Premium-Option that is in place with the MacBooks?

Surely, one thing following the other, the 8gb version should be white with a black option on the 16gb model.

Anyone else find this weird?

When my contract ends, I am 3G iPhone all the way.

Feel sorry for my brother-in-law who just spanked a wad on a 32gb iPod Touch.

Eek!

Has anyone noticed that on the US store it says on the requirements:

AT&T service
(minimum two-year agreement)

on UK store it only says:

Wireless service

I think UK are getting unlocked phones!!!!

I personally dont care about having a camera at the front
I have a 3G Nokia N73
I never use video conferencing anyway

I thought it was a little odd too.

Pricing Pricing Pricing

Given that the iPhone is effectively CHEAPER than the iPod Touch, what's going to happen to the pricing of the iPod Touch? Will Apple update the iPod Touch as well this summer (before the end of the college discount campaign)? Are 2-year contracts part of the $199 deal; is there no way to buy the iPhone without the contract?

No front side camera :-(

I kept waiting for Steve to go "oh, and one more thing..." for the front side camera to do video iChat. Guess I'm not canceling my Verizon contract after all.

The reason why you can't buy it online now is because it's NOT AVAILABLE until the 11th of July... The online Apple Store is a store too.

This is a "developers conference" not a consumer conference.

So? It doesn't happen often that there is not a hardware release at WWDC.
From ZDnet last year:

"Today’s WWDC keynote was completely hardware-free, a first in six years. WWDC used to be the show where no hardware was announced but that changed in 2002. Let’s review what hardware Apple has announced at previous WWDCs:

* 2002 - Xserve (*first hardware announcement)
* 2003 - Power Macintosh G5, iSight camera
* 2004 - Redesigned Apple Cinema Displays (flat-panel, aluminum)
* 2005 - PPC to Intel Migration
* 2006 - Mac Pro (Intel Zeon) and Intel Xserve"

One advantage of a white iPhone 3G over the 16GB in black is that people will know you have the larger capacity model. That's a cheaper way to impress people than, say, driving a huge car. Then again, the prices are so low now that it's gonna be harder to impress people by owning an iPhone at all.
so you bought your phone to impress others? You have a very strange outlook on life. Impress others by doing something amazing like charity work. Not by the phone you bought.

go to your shop for the pix:

FANTASTIC! I LOVE IT!:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
I am buying two.

THe only couple things I am bummed, but not whining.
Availability now and a 32gig version.
But I can live with that.

Amazing prices, amazing product. i wished I had Apple stock. This thing will sell like crazy. iPhone is taking the world. Sorry Blackberry and Palm. Your days are numbered.

Awesome!!!!!!!:D
defiantly getting the black one!
no UK prices released yet but i bet they don't cost £100 and £150

maybe apple are putting the ipod touch in that 16/32 gb slot ?

with the price points they are offering on the iPhone and touch, the touch would have to be decreased or a higher capacity iphone will have to be released. 32gb would be perfect.
