But the 3G, GPS, and Iphone 2.0 software are still big selling points. I'm in....oh wait, the biggest negative:

CAN'T BUY IT TILL JULY 11TH!

3G upgrade seems pretty solid but I still agree that they could have done a bit more, the 2mpx camera is pretty pathetic in this day and age, esp with Apple touting it as a media device with iphoto. My Nokia has a 5mpx Carl Zeiss camera, which which is not going to compete with my digi-cam is still pretty impressive for a phone.

Front camera is pretty suprising as most 3G phones have video-conferencing ability, even if it isn't used much.

I've no doubt that this is a great product and what the original iphone should have been, but still isn't as polished as it could be. I think i'll wait for iphone 3.0.

Hadn't thought of that - but i wouldnt of thort so, I mean, all I would have to do is plug it in to my mac, and voila, everything is over - although, could be if you want to keep your phone number??

xx

I guess we'll find out. I'd imagine both phones probably use the same iPhone SIM card. Drop your old SIM in and do what's called a "soft activation." Or at least that's how I forsee how it will work.

I wonder if they will tie the iPhone to a certain carrier in all those new countries.
Point is, I will be in Hong Kong and China for a couple of months and would like to get an iPhone there and use it when back in Germany. Due to the strong Euro buying it abroad should be a lot cheaper.

NEWSFLASH:

The store is back up, and the iPhone page says ONLY available at the Apple or AT&T Store.

This means you have to sign a contract BEFORE leaving the store...

This is a good point, the phone IS subsidized. It's not available to order online, thus activation probably won't be through iTunes.

anti-climactic

that was the worst 2 hours of waiting. store is up though..

Dude, that was the worst 2 months of waiting....ever!! Talk about your anti-climaxes!!

Other than the GPS (and possibly the bragging rights of saying you have the new iphone 3G) there's ABSOLUTELY no reason to buy it!!! The software update for current iphone owners will give you practically everything you need!!!

And at $199 EVERYBODY'S gonna have one! So what's the point?

Let me YET AGAIN count the number of strategic feature omissions by Apple on a "new" product. Naw, on second thought, I'm done...it's a wrap.

My advice (as is usually the case with Apple): be patient...wait.

In 6 freakin' months there'll be a new model introduced with those strategically overlooked features included -- and for a price worthy of Apple tradition!!!!!!!

Stevie boy only made this move to appease the commoners.

$199 and a measly 16GB of storage is simply and quite frankly embarrassing for a company of this calibur --- but, appropriately enough, fitting for what you get hardware-wise lolol

Told you it'd be a trick, didn't I?!!!

Oh and one more thing on a more serious note: was it just me or did Steve not look the picture of good health??? You could practically see his bones through his clothing. Kinda scary. And yeah yeah yeah I know about his fight with cancer and all that but, still....kinda scary what I saw today.

My v1.0 iphone has 3G sim card - does the upgrade give us 3G? Or did I miss something.....

All recent AT&T SIM cards have the word 3G on it, regardless of whether the phone they're in support it or not. The iPhone v1.0 is not a 3G capable phone (it's in the phone's hardware) so the 2.0 software thing will NOT give you 3G.

I think he meant a maximum of the local equivalent of $199 USD.

I thought it was interesting that he made a point of saying that. To me it meant the same, no more than the equivalent of $199USD in each countries currency. Though I guess you need to give them 5-10% either way plus local sales taxes on top.

iPhone 3g

Cons:

1. Easily more scratched on the back
2. Same lousy camera
3. No copy/paste functionality
4. No 802.11n support
5. Same lame bluetooth support
6. No 32 gig version, but that will be available in a few months after being on sale

Pros:

1. 3g
2. Assisted GPS
3. Much cheaper

My questions are, and I probably already know the answers, is what upgrade path will AT&T allow us? Will they extend the contract for another two years? (probably) Will they allow trade-ins? (probably not) Is the rate plan going to increase? (probably, but not a huuuuuge increase) And I also wonder how many idiots are going to go on e-bay buying the iPhone 2.0, not realizing that it will be the original one with the 2.0 software. The smart ones will see that it will not support 3g, but the rest will jump on it. Other than that, pretty disappointing second generation phone.
But do we know that this is true? It seems as if Jobs was focusing on Developer related issues and not so much on the new phone. Wouldn't surprise me if you could do more with the phone, and he just ran out of time.

Maybe (I hope). I would love to be able to hook up a bluetooth keyboard and actually do some work in those apps.

Disappointed in Apple

Apple has lost its commitemnt for its true followers and early adopters. No way to buy now (I think this is a first for them) and no deal for those of us who dropped $599 for the first iPhones.
Very disappointed.

No picture messaging still? What a ****ing travesty.

I hope the speakers are alot louder so that I can use my phone as a speaker phone.

Everything else though is quite excellent.

One advantage of a white iPhone 3G over the 16GB in black is that people will know you have the larger capacity model. That's a cheaper way to impress people than, say, driving a huge car. Then again, the prices are so low now that it's gonna be harder to impress people by owning an iPhone at all.

The iPhone 3G will be available July 11th in 22 countries for $199 for 8 GB and $299 for 16 GB. The 16 GB model also comes in white.

Big mistake not making the entry level 16gb at $199 and the 32gb at $299 they would've ruled the world. Anyhow you know the 8gb will get phased out quickly as the 1g did, leaving the 16gb at it's price point. They want you to buy all those new apps and games and give you 7.62 gb to store it in.

how in all hell does it mean that?? isn't that where they were sold last time? and yet everyone bought them without signing any contract..

BBC have just confirmed the UK price will be £100. That is excellent. I must also add that this release is a top news story in the UK now. To all UK residents,

You can't say you expected Apple to charge $600 for the iPhone forever right? That's the nature of the tech world - stuff gets better and cheaper as time goes on. Why are so many people complaining?

you have to be kidding me. Exactly what new chips were you hoping they would use?

Oven Chips :D

Any news as to the 3G data plan cost? No way they keep it at the $20 of the present plan, but if they keep it under $40 it'd be pretty reasonable.
