Do you think you can buy the $200 iphone and then not activate it. That way you get a really nice (cheap) ipod touch without the expensive ATT contract.

iPhone 3g

Cons:

1. Easily more scratched on the back
2. Same lousy camera
3. No copy/paste functionality
4. No 802.11n support
5. Same lame bluetooth support
6. No 32 gig version, but that will be available in a few months after being on sale

Pros:

1. 3g
2. Assisted GPS
3. Much cheaper

My questions are, and I probably already know the answers, is what upgrade path will AT&T allow us? Will they extend the contract for another two years? (probably) Will they allow trade-ins? (probably not) Is the rate plan going to increase? (probably, but not a huuuuuge increase) And I also wonder how many idiots are going to go on e-bay buying the iPhone 2.0, not realizing that it will be the original one with the 2.0 software. The smart ones will see that it will not support 3g, but the rest will jump on it. Other than that, pretty disappointing second generation phone.....and I'll still get one. Jeez.

how come a macbook is $1399 and €1399?!?!?!?! i reckon this **** will happen with the iphone too. so its €199, then €45 per month, with a €20 txt bundle, plus all the international calls i use, and i see that at&t are saying its a 24 month contract now?! ********, ill settle for 18 months but not 2 years!!!!

I was really hoping to get one of these but with that same crappy old camera I won't be bothering. Same 2mpx, no zoom, no flash. I know what they've added is nothing special, just 3G, GPS and a few location based things, the same stuff that Nokia's been pushing for ages and I wasn't expecting anything more, but they could at least have put a flash and video on it. I've got a four year old Nokia lying about that does video.

No mention of the camera = no video and retaining the mediocre, existing 2mb cam?

That is really disappointing.

wow, $199 and $299. I guess the folks who sold their current iphones for $400 and up are looking smart now. Still, I may just keep my gen 1 because it's still serving me very well, and it will only get better with software 2.0 (which looks awesome).

And how angry are those ebay buyers who paid $400 and $500 for a used iPhone going to be? ha gotta love it, sucks for them but hey they should do more research before they spend that kind of money. I never buy anything like that until I've searched all around to see what's available and what's around the bend.

No, that's new. Wonder if it is to help us upgrade from the current iPhone to this new 3G phone.

Hadn't thought of that - but i wouldnt of thort so, I mean, all I would have to do is plug it in to my mac, and voila, everything is over - although, could be if you want to keep your phone number??

xx

Annoyed but looks cool

Would be better if it had video conferencing with camera next to proximity sensor. But battery probably wasnt up to it... :( I am really annoyed, should of sold my iPhone 1st Gen on eBay, stupid relying on apple to do anything to improve their customer relations like offer trade in on 1st gens. Anyway, i like the white one (most likely to be sold out within the first couple of minutes when released LOL. I think that the iPhone 2.0 firmware cancels out the bad points.

So the $199 is the actual price and not a subsidy from AT&T?

This is what i am wondering. Everything i read about this said AT&T would subsidize it. I just wonder where those rumors came from. I guess that is why they are rumors.

I don't think any first adaptors should complain. Please. Don't. It is so annoying. You had to have know this would happen a year later. It is one of the reasons why i waited. Stick it out and get more for less. That is technology for you.

so the GPS application probably doesn't have voice commands...

then what's the point? I don't want to look at my iPhone while I'm driving...

NEWSFLASH:

The store is back up, and the iPhone page says ONLY available at the Apple or AT&T Store.

This means you have to sign a contract BEFORE leaving the store...

They said that for the old iPhone too. I don't see the current way of doing things changing (bring back home, sign contract via iTunes).

This WWC was as boring as watching paint dry. I almost fell asleep watching the demos, time to get some lunch and hope that this afternoon brings something special. I'm very disappointed that we didn't get any instant gratification. Nothing available until next month. Sure, the 2.0 software has many interesting possibilities, and we all knew about MobileMe, but there is nothing revolutionary about the new iphone, no front camera, no video ichat, no specs, hell, not even a real iphone 2.0 to look at.....

The previous phones were activated via iTunes, as will be the case with this version.
