...and McDonald's sells approximately 4.2 million hamburgers a day in the United States alone!

Question is, of course, how good they are for you and are they really worth your money?

:)

YES, they are worth the money if PEOPLE keep buying the burgers. Go back to school and take an economics class. Sheesh.

Do you people REALLY not understand how the market works?

...Now are they good for you, NO, but neither are most things that we humans indulge in.

You're joking, right? You don't think a phone that drops calls when you touch it in the wrong spot is defective?

If it was the Droid with this problem you would be having a field day with it.

While I absolutely love my new iPhone, the man's got a point here. If this was the launch of a much hyped Android phone and it was revealed to be having issues with the screen or dropped calls, the people on this board would be laughing until they wet themselves.

Not necessarily. The Nexus One did -and does - have this exact issue...

I can't believe the audacity that some of you people have in here.

Just hold it a different way, or move a finger around!???

Are you just so blinded by the fact that this is an enherit flaw. If Microsoft came out with a phone with this flaw you guys would be jumping up and down pointing fingers and laughing. Get your heads of out Apple's ass.

Geez.

Clearly you are holding it wrong. If you had a vuvuzela and were blowing in the large end and claimed it did not work, would we be crazy for telling you, you were holding it wrong?

Keep Up

Most successful product launch ever...

Only in terms of numbers.

I have a hard time being enthusiastic about it from where I sit.

I knew that I would not have the time to camp out over-night at an apple store, or wherever... because I have work to do. So, I pre-ordered. It took all day on June 15th, and I got bumped to the June 2nd shipping group. I also opted to buy a bumper case, to keep the phone a bit safer, which now I hear, they are GIVING away, if they have any in stock.

My iPhone still hasn't shipped, and nobody has any stock. So much for beating the bushes on the first pre-order day, but I suppose it could be worse.

My case has shipped, and has already missed it's fed-ex tracking delivery date, with no scanned activity since the morning of the 24th, now 4+ days ago. It is in the ether, and already charged to my account. Not gratis like some folks are receiving, and not arrived by the date it was supposed to. yippee. I hope it isn't just gone, so that I don't have to wrangle with Apple and FedEx about it, or worry about my phone shipping via the same carrier coming to the same lack of delivery.

My apple order staus says the phone still won't ship for another week, but who knows.

And I have a possibly functionality-compromised device to now look forward to, due to basic RF design theory not being heeded. Luckily I plan on keeping it in a case, and use it more for a portable internet device, than a phone, so it's other amazing functionality will be primary, and the case might help avoid antenna issues. I hope that maybe being a later build, necessitating a shipping delay, will mean that somehow, when my iPhone does arrive, it will be in good working order, and the antenna issue will be somehow less likely, like those who report that they aren't having the signal strength loss issue.

For my work, I will be ordering probably nearly 100 MacBook Pro laptops, later this summer. I hope they will be handled better than this. They have been handled better than this in the past.

I am glad they got such huge numbers, but I hope they don't drop the ball much more than the delays and stock issues they are currently having. Some of what has happened is understandable and forgiveable... but it is becoming a thin margin between this and unacceptable.

They claimied this phone was going to be as important as the initial iPhone was, by being such an improvement. they should have been on top of the antenna issue ("You're holding it wrong" is not an acceptable response, and horrible PR. "We're working on it" would have been somewhat understandable.)

If they claimed that the iPhone 4 is so much better than previous iterations, they should have been prepared better for a high demand level, even if 1.7M units is a surprise. THey knew that the 3G was hotter demand than the original, and that 3GS again sold a lot of units on it's introduction, and it was not a complete revision of the whole device. They should have been prepared for more response than the 3GS, and 600K pre-orders should not have crashed the system, and 1.7M sales should not knock out the supply chain for a week at least after the first release day, even if there were some spots of back-order here and there.

No doubt the demand was surprising. But preparation could have been better than it was on pre-order day, and release day, and shortly after both occasions.

I sure hope that the benefits of this new phone are as good as they say, after all this waiting, the supply break-down delays, and hysteria over the new features, and also the discovered shortcoming on the antennas, and other issues that people have noticed. If I didn't think the benefits would be worth the wait, I would already have cancelled my order. I hope my optimism isn't misplaced. I am beginning to wonder.

Keep your optimism, its worth it, the phone is AMAZING! Mine has worked flawless, read some of my earlier posts on different forms (MacRumors) . I'm sorry for your order delay I spent almost all day on the 15th to get my order in and I got lucky a second time when it arrived on the 22nd, yes the 22nd I was stoked and have been enjoying since. So hang in there it's going to happen for you too!:apple::apple::apple:

Fact 1. I put my hand around my iPhone which lowers the signal strength.
Fact 2. This happens with any phone.
Fact 3. 1.7 Million buy iPhone 4 and 10,000 of those people who can shout the loudest on the internet can replicate said issue, therefore that translates into a product recall. Never mind the fact that if such public interest wasn't widespread on the internet not many people would actually notice or care.

Fact 4. If I put my hand over the screen of my phone, I can't see the screen, can anybody else check this for me and see if they have the same issue, this iPhone might now need to be recalled due to this obvious design flaw.

You are right on, but people are impatient and whine. They also throw out all logic and the ability to use common sense. It's why our country is going to hell in a handbasket.

The most annoying thing I find with the iPhone 4 is the waiting for it to be available for sale again. I wish Apple still have iPhones for sale in their stores. I wonder how long it will be before new iPhones arrive.

haha...that just made my day. :p

1.7 million devices....if Apple makes say 400 bucks per unit. Thats..... 680 mill in profit.

To think, in 07 Steve Ballmer laughed at the iPhone in an interview....betcha he's not laughing anymore

Apple doesn't make anywhere near $400 per unit.

The cost of the parts alone is ~$187.00. Factor in support, research and development, software, distribution and the rest, and they are not coming away anywhere close to that figure.

R&D and support, distro and such are high cost, but at the rate these things are selling it will all be paid off in no time.

Even if Apple only made say 200 per phone...thats still a substantial amount of cash in one week. And the money will just keep pouring into their 20-30billion dollars they have stashed away....once they release the iPhone in Canada and all the other countries they have lined up for July...then August....then September. $$

It's already taken care of.

Apple expenses R&D, sales costs, etc. on a quarterly basis. It's in their financial earnings statements (e.g., SEC reports).

Steve said that the iPhone 4 was 18-months worth of work. They've been paying R&D for six quarters. It's an ongoing expense, the cost of doing business. Apple researches and prototypes many devices, most of which never make it to the market.

100 million - say it like Dr. Evil - one hundreeeed meeelion.

Dude you are on crack! I was WWDC, Apple has over 100 million iPhones out there Worldwide! Don't hate!

Marcus

I think that number is all iphones, ipod touches, and ipads. Still a big-ass pool to develop for that's increasing across the board - from a single vendor and SDK.

iPhone4 - 77% = repeat customer
Google - 160,000 Android Phones Sold Per Day

2010 Smartphone Market by Platform [Estimate on June 28, 2010]

1. Symbian [73 Million]
2. Android [58 Million]
3. Blackberry [46 Million]
4. iPhone OS [35 Million]
5. Windows Mobile 6.5 [8.5 Million]

What's the big deal?

Wouldn't you buy one if they gave you one for free, that's exactly how cheep android phones are 2x1. Because you can make crazy statements of how many android phone are sold per day (on a daily basis there is to much fluctuation to make it an actual statement) it can be said that they have actually sold 29 million [Estimate on June 28, 2010] right?

The EVO numbers aren’t actually published, but analysts are saying about 150,000. That’s in line with the statement that Sprint did publish, although again they didn’t put the actual number in there (just that it was in line with the combined Palm Pre and Samsung Instinct sales, and their largest launch ever).

150,000.

Compared to 1.7 million.

Wow, they’re sure proud of that, aren’t they?

Yeah, Congrats Apple! Still trying to buy one but not to be found. I have been to Wallmart, Radioshack, Best Buy and all I get is "we have a waiting list" and "maybe in a month". Also went to 2 Apple stores in the last two days and I find it interesting that the flagship new product which is front and center when you walk in "is not for sale". You can order on-line (3 weeks) but no one has an idea of when they might have them again. Sounds vaguely similar to mushroom management - keep your stores and staff in the dark and feed them 'you know what!'. Tomorrow is the 29th. ATT says they will have them in their stores - We will see.

It may be their greatest launch ever but it wasn't as good for me as it was for them. See you in 3 weeks!

Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings

Its that easy to fix the reception issue. Mine did it for the first few minutes of owning the phone, followed this procedure and it has been perfectly fine since. Fandroids love to find faults in the one phone that has continously dominated...

I've done this numerous times. It doesn't fix the problem. If that were the fix Apple Care would be telling us to do that when we call. Instead, they just keep telling us to call back a few days later and that they're working on the issue.

To think, in 07 Steve Ballmer laughed at the iPhone in an interview....betcha he's not laughing anymore

If that kook spent less time dismissing other people's products and more time dismissing his own, they'd actually improve their products and have something of true value in the world.

iPod version has a chance to be the better product

Possible overheating issue... I wonder how hot the faster CPU gets in high ambient temperatures?

The numbers look good so expect an iPod version soon. :apple::)

not to mention assembly.
Oddly enough, iSuppli's BOM estimates usually include a guesstimated assembly cost.

While they have not publicly revealed their detailed BOM of the iPhone 4, here is that of the iPhone 3GS:

http://www.isuppli.com/news/pages/i...ufacturing-cost-isuppli-teardown-reveals.aspx

As you can see, they estimate $6.50 for assembly of the iPhone 3GS. I doubt if the iPhone 4 assembly costs varies more than a quarter. It's puzzling why BusinessWeek says that labor isn't included. Perhaps BusinessWeek is wrong?

So...

The next time an Android starts an argument you say... 1.7 million, 1.7 million, 1.7 million, 1.7 million, 1.7 million, 1.7 million, 1.7 million, 1.7 million, 1.7 million,
:D
