1) To all those who have comments on the phone's issues..find the appropriate thread. This is about sales.
2) To all those complaining that Apple was not ready for this launch, the sales were unprecedented. No wonder there were supply issues.
3) Had all the 3GS owners been held to their contractual obligations and not been allowed to upgrade early, the sales would have been a bit more blunted and distributed. I shudder to think what the 2012 iPhone sales lines will be (assuming the same "mistake" of allowing early upgrades is not repeated).

Not if it has as many problems as the iP4 has. Dropped calls, yellow spots on screen, etc.

But I guess it's all OK because it's Apple and Apple can do no wrong, right?

When the definition of "success" is "units sold," yes, it is a successful launch.

We get that you don't like the product. Fine. At least 1.7 million of us do, which is the point of the news item.

Yeah the phone is a success even with all the issues. Don't worry apple will make it right. You have a warranty. Yes it's crazy right now being so close to launch but they'll either issue a software update to fix it or issue replacement phones to the ones that can't be fixed via software.

A semi-rhetorical question, I suppose...
Has there EVER been a product launch that has been totally and completely without issue? I doubt it. The general mood has gone from excitement to hostile since iP4 was announced at keynote through current day. Chaos and mayhem over the preorder debacle, then anxiety over early shipment and release and tracking status, and now the reception issues followed by the cry of "give me something for free."

Congrats to Apple for most successful launch ever. It was extremely ambitious and fell short in some areas, but kudos nonetheless. I'll continue with my general thinking of, "If they make it...I will buy," if for no other reason that I am yet to find a product made by another company that compares.

Respectfully disagree = oxymoron

They definitely should have announced a solution to the signal problem before announcing sales numbers.

regardless of issues with the device this is impressive for apple and for an update too.

...and McDonald's sells approximately 4.2 million hamburgers a day in the United States alone!

Question is, of course, how good they are for you and are they really worth your money?

:)

It does drop the call!!! Since owning the iP4, I have had a total of 6 dropped calls.

I NEVER had any dropped calls with the iP2G, 3G or 3GS on O2_UK.

Not good. I rarely rarely ever have any dropped calls with my 3G. Usually only will drop when I am in the mountains, when I am far from any populated areas.

Depending on which studies you read, left-handedness accounts for 10% - 30% of the world's adult population. So splitting this down the middle, let's just say that 20% of those 1.7 million iPhones sold, or about 340,000 people will have to worry about the left-handed "grip of death."

If you add this 20% of people to the long list of righties who are buying Apple's bumper case, Apple may have struck it rich with this one! They are selling it for $30.00, and because we know how Apple's profit margins work, it probably cost them under $1.00 to manufacturer.

Congrats Apple, both sarcastically and sincerely.

I love my new iP4!

I'm not suggesting folks don't feel they have a legitimate complaint. But there are PLENTY of topics that are appropriate for their complaining and temper tantrums. This topic isn't one of them.

People who spent $200 or more on a phone that can't function as a phone are just complaining and throwing temper tantrums? I'd be pretty pissed off if it were me.

Luckily, I didn't buy an iPhone 4 and have no plans to, I just feel truly sorry for the people who did buy an iPhone 4 that can't make calls, so perhaps I am complaining and throwing a temper tantrum, but others have good reason to rant about it any chance they get.

Not what he said. He said there are plenty of places to discuss this already and this topic shouldn't be polluted. This thread is to discuss sales of the device, not dropping calls. People bringing dropped calls into this thread are the equivalent of a child throwing a tantrum. Keep relevant discussions where they belong.

In other news, Apple goes on to announce that the Bumper protective cover for the iPhone 4, is the second most successful product launch ever coming on the heel of the news of iPhone's reception issues.
