Some of us were actually fans of the bumpers and the beautiful glass back, especially in the white model. Aesthetics are an essential part of an Apple product...I don´t´see why it should not be discussed

That's fine, but I don't think you can really judge the new iPhone until you see it in person. That mirrored edge looks pretty sharp to me. I have a feeling the fit and finish will be more impressive in the flesh.

Looks nice but not impressed. Loving my Galaxy S3. Even my diehard iphone toting wife isn't excited about the new iphone 5. She is getting jealous of my ability to swap batteries more and more every day though. Maybe now I can get her a white S3.

Someone has said this on every single iPhone release. Your comment is the least innovative thing in the thread.

Isnt that just very telling apple hasnt updates anything significant in the iphone for years?

Only specs that really matter for the iPhone (6th generation) are these:
112 grams, 20% lighter than iPhone 4S
7.6mm thick, 18% thinner than iPhone 4S
LTE
Battery life exceeds iPhone 4S
Less glare in sunlight

The other phone companies are soiling themselves.

I bet Safari is snappier.

On a serious note is there anyone who may have some insight on when the pre-order will begin? I forget the past devices times.

12AM PDT on Friday (that's 3AM here on the East Coast). I'm guessing it will be contract devices only (no official unlocked versions yet).

I can only pray you´re right...I remember how many months were spent finding the right shade of the white for the glass back and the result was and still is stunning. I can not see how two-tone can be more elegant than one-tone, but I do hope I am wrong

I don't get the fascination to swap batteries out.

1) You'd need to be carrying them around to be able to switch them out in a jam.
2) Why on earth do you need to swap the battery in the first place, the phone only came out 5 months ago!?
3) Wouldn't carrying a charger weigh just as much and be less of a hassle to just plug it than switching out a battery?
4) Isn't that just more money you pay for extra batteries?

These are all serious questions and being that you seem to be enamored with the "feature" I'd love for you to explain this to me. Personally, I'm not a fan of devices you can just pop the back off of....because once you do, it never feels as sturdy (felt this way about my N7)

I'm upgrading from my black iPhone 4. This is enough of an update to go ahead and be under AT&T's thumb for two more years (not that I was leaving anyway). The big question for me is, will they let me keep my unlimited data plan?

I always used the bumper, precisely NOT to hide the stunning glass back....and that is also how Steve advertised the bumper when it first came out. I wonder what he would think of the two-tone...

the gorilla glass front & back covers are awesome, i agree, the phone as a designer piece is a collector's item, never to be repeated by any sane phone company

steve j did not advertise the bumper... it was a weak excuse for the "cover up" of the "antenna gate" connectivity issue of the iPhone 4, corrected on the 4S, to some extent

it is a pity, as no phone should not be used with any "protection" from a designer's point of view

I think the iPhone 5 will be more impressive in person and if you got her one that would be better. If nothing more, it would give you the best of both worlds. Swapping batteries is a bit overrated, since it also requires buying another one and carrying it around. Even Nokia is going with the integrated battery. Also, the new iPhone gets 33% longer battery life on 3G than the 4S.

for all those hating this new design, first just watch the iphone video on apple's website then decide wether it just an incremental approach ..i can tell from the video that the build quality of this thing is gonna be unmatched...samsung cant even touch it...

Can someone please help me tackle the SV-DO possibility with this new iPhone 5 on Verizon's 3G network? Talking about Verizon only, here.

For those who do not know, by SV-DO I am referring to simultaneous voice and data while on Verizon's 3G [CDMA[] network.

The Apple event stated: "Single chip [for voice and data], single radio, dynamic antenna."

QUESTIONS!

1) What does the single radio do?

2) The chip does voice and data. Can someone explain this? Does it do it when in either LTE or 3G (or sub-3G) areas?

3) Is the following scenario possible? Scenario: while in a Verizon 3G area -- the phone will use the radio for data and the LTE chip for voice?

Let's break this down, please! Trying to understand if Apple's implementation is actually an SVDO implementation without it really even being talked about. SVDO is never talked about or advertised.

What exactly are you guys expecting that are disappointed in this update? Are you really expecting the gigantic leap that occurred with the initial iPhone and later Android phones relative to the existing, archaic Blackberry and Palm devices?

In case you haven't noticed, new phones are released every month that are not drastic departures from the models they replaced.

I cannot say this update will make me order the iPhone 5 since my contract is up for renewal, but I am really trying to figure out what you guys were expecting. I'd love the S3 but I am concerned about its Exchange functionality/reliability, so I will likely just stay with the iPhone 4.

Oooooooh lets see? A more open platform (ie on the S3 you can share a pic throughout every app on the phone that will accept a photo. Not just tweet, email, SMS and OH MY GOD! Facebook), a wider screen, a slimmer design, a Micro USB connector (as you have to use a special connector anyway) ... that's just off the top of my head

I can finally get the S3...

To all the idiots posting that kind of comment, please explain to me how the S3 is actually better than this new iPhone in real life? Comparing both I'd say the iPhone is much better than the S3 apart from the screen, and even then, some people don't like huge screens.

So many stupid comments in here...

It's not revolutionary or anything. It's simply slightly better in ever way. I don't really have any issues with my 4S. I'm not really sure what people expect really. They want some crazy new design? It's a friggin phone. Obviously I haven't used one yet, but I like what I see.

I think the thing I'm most disappointed about is that the entire thing was leaked way in advance. I was really hoping that Apple was intentionally leaking fake parts so as to throw everyone off. Absolutely no surprises today. I was especially hoping to see a return to the curved back, since I find my iPhone 4S's sharp edges to be uncomfortable to hold.

Leaving that aside...The device itself is a let-down for me, too. Faster processor. OK, but my iPhone 4S seems plenty fast enough. Larger screen: Great, but when I'm browsing the web, I prefer to browse in portrait mode, and the fonts (when browsing non-optimized sites) seem too small. I would have preferred the screen be larger in both dimensions (though I do agree with the concept of making it 16:9). I guess LTE is the only other thing I could get mildly excited about. Again, though, my AT&T 3G (4G Lite) speeds are usually acceptable. I worry more about running past my data limit with their new plans, especially with them encouraging tethering and FaceTime usage.

Right now I've got two iPhone 4S's and an iPhone 4. The first two are just a year into their contract. The second should be upgradable. But I'm not sure if I want to bother. I'll probably mull over this for a while yet.

I really think its a hold over from a lot of android phones needing to have the battery taken out and put back into save it from a crash.

Why would Samsung want to touch it... it's a phone perhaps this my have been better... Oooooooh lets see?
