Probably not intented.

Furthermore they often introduce features that won't be publicly available through APIs until the next OS version.

Hoping for a 7.1 API...or maybe Apple is working on a keychain type deal for iOS8.

Great point. Even if you have a 64-bit processor there will always be bottlenecks somewhere as rarely does a CPU double the bandwidth of every connection. Thanks for the enlightening post.

Awesome reference. I'm spitting green stuff out my mouth as well.

Those that follow development know that Apple often has private API that eventually go public to Devs after being battle tested. I see Touch ID as being battle tested with limited Apple Only access. Once the data comes back that it's secure Apple rolls out more comprehensive tools and support for 3rd party Devs. What we're both saying is understandable. Just different approaches right?

Yes they could very well be doing that but with something like this, it seems to be a lot more difficult to get feedback from. With something like Siri being server based, they received tons of data on successful vs unsuccessful commands and could adjust accordingly. I feel with this sensor, their only feedback will be from users who complain (and feel strongly enough to post or email them). Allowing devs to integrate them would generate much more feedback.

Of course, they could be holding out for a keychain type deal in the next version, which would be way better IMO.

What are you doing on your phone that you need it to connect at that speed. I'm sure the bottleneck is your internet connection. Even if you're moving things around the network to your phone, which maybe you do, you're never going to get the theoretical 2.5 Gbps that you'd see on an AC device anyway.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be nice to have, I'm just saying the data use doesn't support them investing in an AC chip on the iPhone IMO.

802.11ac isn't just about speed - it's also about improved signal strength, especially as the signal can be steered with ac.

Nothing wrong with that. I love my iPhone 5 and I'm sure the 5S will be a great buy, but it doesn't have nearly enough features to want me to upgrade.

Just curious, if you have a 5 why do you need s new phone? I guess I just don't get why some feel the need to upgrade their phone every year.

Is the no pre-order policy just with Apple directly? I hope I can pre-order my 5S with Three-UK over the next few days once their pricing options have been announced. I need to replace my 4S as soon as.

For me, just because I love tech and can afford a new phone every year. I´ll do it so I don´t get bored of using the same phone for 2 years. I did that with the 3Gs, I´ll never go through that again:rolleyes:

anyway for security reasons i will register the touch ID with my big toe

LOL. Dude I cracked up over this.

….

That would be awesome. Anecdotally I chatted with the parents of an Apple engineer working in Cupertino and they said "he can't tell us anything but we know he's working on security for a release that is years away"

It was pretty amazing to think about how security is conceptualize across many releases. I guess with annual updates you pretty much have to project manage this way. I must admit the NSA stuff, Snowden and other events have me looking at security a lot harder.

Get an iPhone 5S.

I don't want it. Most likely I will get next iPad, but next phone wouldn't be from Apple. I waited long enough, but last 3 phones failed to impress me, so it's time for change. Z1 have great camera and it water/dust proof, but Sony really slow with OS updates, Nexus 5 should be cheap with prompt OS upgrades, not sure about everything else.

That's not really the issue. Four digits is minimal security and hopefully fingerprint will be quicker and more convenient than having to do the passcode every time.

And if you have a camera as good as the one in the iPhone 5 and never use it, that's your problem, not Apple's.

Punching in the four digit code has never been a problem for me.

I have two cameras that are far superior to what the iPhone offers, and both have viewfinders you can look through to frame and focus your photo.

One is a pocket digital and the other is a real DLSR.

And again, Apple didn´t innovate anything, just made upgrades to what´s already out there, fingerprint sensor and divided processors? is that all? (camera update and colors, i know but it´s not that significant either) a colored iPhone 5? Apple is loosing it´s capability to impress people... like i said innovating it´s not improving, not even the MacPro with it´s new round design that only some Pro users will pay for or need to... There is not good reason to upgrade from the iPhone 5, i just don´t feel the excitement anymore... i remember the buzz generated by the 3gs to 4 and to 4s to 5 (and even 4 to 4s was a big deal of improvements) but not today...not today Apple. :(

You believe them that the fingerprint data will not be given to NSA? It is silly to believe that.

Of course they will. NSA already has access to our phone data and can have the data before you can finish setup.

You can remember the 4 digit code and so can someone looking over your shoulder (people can remember 5-7 only seeing it once. You should have a much longer alpha-numeric password if you want to actually secure your phone)

It sounds like you don't even use the iPhone 5 to its potential. Those upgrades are for those people who do take a lot of pictures and people who use their iPhones for more than just email and phone calls. You might as well just have gotten (or kept) an iPhone 3G...

I rarely have someone looking over my shoulder when I use my cell phone. I use my cell to make and receive phone calls, to iMessage, to send and receive emails, once in a while to read news updates from google news, to do some minor banking and to listen to those iTunes I carry on the iPhone. I don't play video games on the phone.

I'm interested in iPhone improvements that improve my quality of use...such as a screen you can easily read outdoors in bright light.

The "slate" they tried comes off as "whimpy grey" and scratches too easily.
The problem is that true brite-coat, piano black anodize is horribly non-friendly to the environment if you mishandle the chemicals... there's just no "nice" way to do it. So Apple can't control their suppliers to properly handle the nasty stuff, so they just don't do it at all. Not all "horrible chemicals" need to be banned because sometimes the results just can't be duplicated... you just gotta clean up after yourself.

You don't know what you are talking about. An aluminum part is anodized (which is clear), a colorant can be applied to the porous surface, and a sealant, usually a chromate, can be applied over that. You can also increase the thickness of the anodize so that it is "hard", but chipping remains a problem.

The cleaners, acids, chromates and rinses are not dumped into the sewage system if that is what you are worried about, and it is easy to monitor compliance.

Seems like the outright price in Australia has gone up $130! I didn't think the AUD was going that badly... Seems very excessive. 64GB is now $1129, up from $999.

Indeed, it was way overpriced before the increase! Apple have lost their mind.

Fingerprint Scanner

I've documented the Fingerprint Scanner inner workings in iOS7.

Fun facts:
The codename for it was "mesa"
It communicates using inter-proccess-communication to a binary that handles access to it
There's a kernel extension to interface with it
The kernel extension communicates to the secure keystore to set and verify fingerprints
The fingerprint scanner calibrates itself and has upgradable firmware
The fingerprint scanner involves normal image formats (i.e. UIImage) before setting and verifying fingerprints.
There's biometric lockout as well as passcode lockout.

Those guys at apple are a bunch of cowards. They have this huge amount of capital reserves and the best designers in the world, and what do they make of it? This mediocre stuff? It's just sad. Come on. Dare to be first again.

"...it’s never stored on Apple servers or backed up to iCloud"

Why the distinction? Would it be a lie to say 'the fingerprint data will never leave the device under any cirumstances'? I suspect so.

Again, four digits is very low security. And while typing four digits isn't a "problem", a fingerprint sensor should be both more convenient and more secure.

To repeat another response, You might as well just have gotten (or kept) an iPhone 3G.

Yes it's silly that there's no black iPhone at all now. The 5C doesn't come in black and the 5S doesn't either… Why?

I'm guessing that the black iPhone 5 was too prone to scuffing because of the dark color. But then okay Apple, don't make a black 5S, but then at least make a black 5C!

Expect a black 5c at next years update. The black will be innovative and fresh. LOL.

Fingerprints + iOS = ...

Now the NSA will have everyone's fingerprints in a neat tidy little voluntarily surrendered package. This is so awesome you guys!

New Colour Option for the 5S

I know its only just been released but i think that Dark Truffle with champagne would have been a far more interesting combo than white and champagne.

does anyone agree?
