I use my cell to make and receive phone calls, to iMessage, to send and receive emails, once in a while to read news updates from google news, to do some minor banking and to listen to those iTunes I carry on the iPhone. I don't play video games on the phone.

I'm interested in iPhone improvements that improve my quality of use...such as a screen you can easily read outdoors in bright light.

so, youre expecting apple to change the laws of physics for you? riiight.

me, i find making calls, doing chats, sending emails, reading news, banking, and listening to music to be improvements in my quality of use.

I have the 4s, and I think that there are plenty of reasons to upgrade to the 5s, increased speed, better camera, better security. Which is why I am upgrading. The only thing that I'm not looking forward to is the larger screen. If apple offered a 5s which had identical specs, but was the same size as the 4s that would be the one I bought. Not everyone wants a larger screen.

Me too, on all counts. If by chance Apple goes to some 6" or + screen size with the iPhone 6 they better also diverge the product line to offer a sane screen size too, and a "#c" doesn't count!

Those guys at apple are a bunch of cowards. They have this huge amount of capital reserves and the best designers in the world, and what do they make of it? This mediocre stuff? It's just sad. Come on. Dare to be first again.

what on earth are you talking about? first 64-bit mobile OS? apple. first smartphone w/ capacitive touch fingerprint reader? apple.

this is the "S" update, the tock of their tick-tock design cycle. they arent going to redesign the body, which is all that youre talking about.

cell phones are mature tech. they arent going to cure cancer w/ a redesign ...

----------

"...it’s never stored on Apple servers or backed up to iCloud"

Why the distinction?

because those are the servers they operate. it goes without saying that if it doesnt go to their servers its not going anywhere.

you do realize packet sniffers could quickly prove if that werent the case, right? easy for a dev to to put an S into a controlled environment and set it up, use it, etc..

Just curious, if you have a 5 why do you need s new phone? I guess I just don't get why some feel the need to upgrade their phone every year.

I'm not sure exactly what part of "not enough features for me to upgrade" you missed? If there was really something that I could benefit from an S upgrade, why shouldn't I get it?

Now the NSA will have everyone's fingerprints in a neat tidy little voluntarily surrendered package. This is so awesome you guys!

youre typing while being ignorant of the facts. watch the touch ID video again.

So Tim Cook's definition of new design is a change to the home button and new colors, to me that is an upgrade to an old design.:( And i gotten all the iPhone since day 1 not to happy with Tim Cook and what he brings to apple.

this is the "S" update...as with the past several iterations they are the "tock" of a two-year, tick-tock design cycle. whats not to get?

i doubt youve had every iphone if you dont get it by now.

----------

It's good to see people are not accepting these tiny minor updates by Apple. The ridiculous pricing of the iPhone 5C and the minor updates to the iPhone 5S. Apple keeps thinking they can do the same trick over and over again. The best signal of today is that the stock went way down after the news of the iPhone 5C.

and yet, they remain the most profitable cell phone maker in the world, and sell more than any other single model.

this is an "S" refresh. not a redesign. how many years does it have to happen before you understand the tick-tock pattern?

The reason for no pre-order of the 5s

I am concerned that the 5s cannot be pre-ordered.

This suggests to me that either a) the phone still isn't ready, or b) the phone is ready, but the production problems are worse than previously leaked, such that they haven't made enough (of satisfactory quality) to make pre-orders possible.

Apple want they press reports of people queuing at Apple stores. But surely they also want positive word of mouth advertising from people seeing the phone in the real world. This can only come from phones actually being in people's hands.

I think people who want the 5s may be in for a long wait.

Somebody really needs to ask Tim Cook what is up with the 5S having no apparent preorder date. If they expect me to go into a store on the 20th, they cannot expect my business this quarter.

You're so desperate to have this phone at launch that you refuse to go get it yourself and because of that you won't get it at all? You can order online and not lift a finger as soon as it comes out, it's just you'll have to get it a few days later Oh No!

Should I Upgrade?

I have a 4s and don't know if I should upgrade now or wait til the next release? Any suggestions?

I think you need to get a job. Some of us have to work Fridays and Saturdays. It would have been nice to come home after a long, hard workday to a nice little package from Apple.

Yes but to refuse to buy the phone just for this reason is a little silly. Especially since he can order it online as soon as it launches.

Hell upgrade now you'll be getting the I.D thing, a far better camera, and a better internals plus a bigger screen, also the S version is always more polished than the original.

AS they did for location data?

what on earth are you talking about? the iphone location data controversy was over the file being stored on the computer you synced to, not anywhere else.

again, apple explained where the fingerprint data hash (not prints anyway) is stored -- in the A7 enclave. a control room and packet sniffer could quickly expose this were it not true.

you were paranoid for nothing. get over it.

Your logic is impeccable. I can't even begin to form a rebuttal.

i'm one of those people that upgrades every year. The 5S is gonna be a nice phone. Maybe not a huge upgrade from the 5, but still nice. i'll be selling my 5 for more then it's going to cost me to upgrade, and then I'll be selling the 5S for the 6. So it's really a win/win for me. No pre-orders kinda pisses me off, but not really a big deal.

Disappointed in 5s

I confess I am very disappointed with the 5s.

Two reasons. The first is the lack of a 128GB option. The second is that the camera is still only 8MP.

I appreciate that the leaks/rumours did not provide much evidence for these upgrades, however with flash memory being so cheap, and other smart phone cameras already providing cameras of this kind, I am disappointed.

I do recognise that upgrading to 64bit processing is impressive. But this is not an improvement that will mean anything (or provide any noticeable improvement) to most users.

Providing Pages and the like for free is a nice gesture. But without the larger memory, these may well end up as another significant bite out of the limited available storage.

This has been a tech-upgrade that seems to disappoint techies and mainstream customers alike.

youre high. just as your PIN is not transmitted to apple/nsa, theres no reason for the fingerprint hash to be transmitted. apple could be sued if they lied about that.

Apple could be sued? Really? Like Apple and all the other tech companies are being sued for giving all our other data to the NSA currently?

Seriously. If you think corporations and government intelligence agencies are going to admit how they are colluding to spy on you, then YOU are the one who's high.

Did you guys see this?

http://store.apple.com/us/buy-iphone/iphone5s

I don't want to buy a phone on contract but I also don't want TMobile. I like AT&T.

Turns out I am eligible for an upgrade.

So don't buy an iPhone sheesh! Don't get your panties in a knot.

Which, by the way, I have no idea of understanding based on the Technical Specifications Apple lists for the phone.

T-Mobile has 4G, LTE, LTE-Advanced all running on different bands - can anyone who actually knows something about this post? I'd love to know with greater certainty than I can ascertain.

Because you know the sales folks at the store aren't going to be much help... "Yeah, it's got the LTE, it says so right here on the screen!"

T-Mobile's 3G/4G HSPA+ runs on both AWS 1700/2100 and PCS 1900 (all though all of their 3G/4G HSPA+ network is being shifted to PCS 1900 to make room for LTE.) Their LTE runs on the AWS 1700/2100 (Band 4.)

T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 network runs on AWS 1700/2100, which they are not changing.

These models of the new iPhone can run all of T-Mobile's network, including HSPA+ 42 and LTE:

These can run T-Mobile's new and re-farmed network (3G/4G on PCS 1900) and also their HSPA+ 42, but not their older 3G/4G network or their LTE network:

me, i find making calls, doing chats, sending emails, reading news, banking, and listening to music to be improvements in my quality of use.

What laws of physics? I have gear on my boat with color screens that can be read in bright sunlight, and most of it sells for a lot less than a current iPhone.

Why do so many people here get "upset" when a user says he'd like to see an improvement in the iPhone screen that would allow it to be easily seen and used outdoors in bright light?

That surely means the next iPads will be 64 bit. What incredible gaming machines they'll be.

And I hope somebody brings out an app to turn the camera's 20-image bursts into gifs.

The camera improvements are what will motivate me to buy. The speed improvements are awesome, considering these are really pocket computers. The touch ID is a convenience but without NFC it isn't important to me. Sounds like we'll need to wait another year before that comes.

This article missed one camera feature. 3X zoom for video. It was embarrassing for me when I was with my Apple hating buddy at the Rolling Stones concert and I'm watching him zoom in on Mick with his Droid and my superior iPhone was suddenly very inferior in regards to the camera. No zoom and poor quality in bright stage concert scenario. Man, did the Droids camera outperform my iPhones in every way. DRASTICALLY

+1 here disappointed with no memory hike to 128GB

I would actually skip this update, except that the wife really wants to inherit my iP5 to replace her 4S

Will switch to the spaced-out grey I think, the white iPhines are just too conspicuous. As for the gold one, yeurgh, bling!

I am SUPER dissapointed that NFC wasn't included, so I'm not going to upgrade. I would have had it been included. I really hope you're right, and someday we actually get NFC.

Aside from that, the fingerprint sensor is really freaking cool, although I do wish they'd also included it on the 5C as an option as well (but I know how much of a pain this would probably be, to manufacture a phone with the sensor being optional). I'm sure it will eventually be in all iPhone models though.
