Sadly, I'm Out

Looking forward to an iPhone, I was pretty excited when I heard they might be doing a pay as you go plans. Sadly, the 2 year contract and $60/mo entrance fee is just too high. Being a teacher, I just don't make that kind of money; usually consuming only 1000 minutes a year. Congratulations to you all, enjoy your iPhones.

I hope we get a better deal in europe when it finally launches here, this is way too expensive.

/pays 16 euro's per month for 150 minutes and unlimited data.
// doesn't actually call 150 minutes
/// or use text messages.

So because AT&T has the iPhone, it makes it OK for them to offer you half of what their competition does for the same price?

Think outside the box here for a minute. You're getting screwed any way you look at it. So what if you get a fancy phone. It's the principle of the thing. AT&T has you bent over and you're willingly accepting it just so you get to use the latest overpriced POS phone.

HAHAHAHAHAA
AAAHAHHAHA

You're joking. You're trying too hard to "think different." You just sound bitter about something.

The prices are clearly competitive. Maybe you can find one plan that's cheaper. In fact, let's say you do find one that's $5 cheaper for the exact same thing, and it's irrefutable (and nothing you have presented has been thus far). Who cares? It's still competitive and at market levels, or better. The phone is an expensive part of the equation, but it's clearly a new, popular high-end phone and it's priced as such. Actually, it's priced at "competitive" rates when compared to the good Palm and Blackberry units out there.

Do you mean if you have BAD credit go to the Apple store? ATT won't activate a phone with bad credit.

The way it is now, the only way for someone with bad credit to get an AT&T phone is to goto an AT&T store and give them a deposit. AT&T online and AT&T over the phone WILL NOT accept security deposits, only AT&T stores do. I don't see apple accepting deposits and doing activations... this is going to be a problem I think, unless AT&T changes their practice of forcing people with bad credit to purchase in-store only.

so if I'm out of contract I should sign up for a new 2 year contract with a non-iPhone with At&t, pocket the discount on the hardware, then switch to the iPhone and my total contract will just be slightly over 2 years? (for those that want two phones)

Are you going 2 tell you have never downloaded a song from Napster, eMule, Limewire, etc?

If you say you haven't, praise the Lord! We have found the next Jesus

I have not.

Then again I don't go around stealing things... and respect intellectual property...

You don't need to get the data plan. For less than $40/mo you can get 450 with roll over minutes. Any plan will still work, this thread is just about the data plans.

I wish they'd put the article in front and refer to it as the iPhone. Just referring to it as "iPhone" reminds me of Happy Fun Ball.

"Warning: Do not taunt iPhone." :p

not sure if this has been said..but Apple likes to make a point of referring to iPod and iPhone without the article. like the writer of that news story does. like "iPhone will be the best phone yet" or "iPod is the best digital music player"

thats all part of their branding..its more a culture/lifestyle than a product.

also..what the hell is wrong with being a fanboy..like seriously..we can't appreciate something nice when it comes along?? all u Apple haters are clearly just jealous of us. just join us over here..it is a lot nicer. u can appreciate the products without the need to be jealous.

and yes..these prices seem fair..not that id really know..i live in australia and our phone plans suck royal sh*t. so these seem good.

edit: for the highest plan of $219 a month or something..its still only 200 sms. is that a joke. what a rip off. and..can u go over ur sms quota and just get charged per sms? or does it not work like that with the plans that u have over there in the US?

Yes and No (imo)

Yes, it gets one out of the store quicker
No, the website's going to get a few hits over the weekend, I wonder if they're equipped.
AT&T deals with millions of calls a day -- Apple deals with selling millions of songs a day... somehow, registering a half a million ipods doesn't seem that big of a deal over the course of a weekend.

yeah im pretty sure u have to get the data plan, it is necessary for a lot of the features on the phone

I currently have an iPod and I do not waste my money downloading songs from iTunes. I get free music from the web like most of us.

Are you gonna be able to download songs directly from your computer, or will they have any restrictions such as songs exclusiverly downloaded from iTunes?

It's also an iPod. Same rules apply.

So are current AT&T customers going to be able to activate the iPhone?

I'm asking because it would be nice to get a discounted/free regular phone with new AT&T activation now, and then just switch to the iPhone on Friday.

That's what I was told by my trusty AT&T store. They wanted me to switch now and get free phones, then upgrade to the iphone on friday...
Wouldn't that add 2 years on to the 2 years I would sign on with making it 4?
If not, I'll switch today.

I'm pretty much sold with these data plans, although I'm going to wait a few weeks to see how many teething issues people have with the iPhone before taking the plunge.

One thing I am wondering is if the iPhone can be used as a Bluetooth wireless modem, as that unlimited data plan is going to be a damn site more useful if I can use the iPhone as a modem for my laptop when I'm on travel. I think almost all bluetooth phones allow you to do this. Hopefully the iPhone isn't "crippled" in this regard.

From the release (for the umpteenth time):
"In addition, iPhone customers can choose from any of AT&T’s standard service plans."

I called and the rep confirmed... I can get an iPhone and it just extends it for 2 yrs from when I activate it !!!

Drool... I want to see how much the family plans are. You can have a family plans with 2 regular phones and then just 1 line with the iPhone right?

I'm scared that it'll sell out :( I wonder how big the lines at the Vegas Cingular stores are going to be. If you want to be SURE to get one, is online the best place to try?

Maybe. But usually they extend the contract from the day you upgrade, not tack it on.

Let me know if you get any more info on this, or you end up doing it yourself.

the plans seem very reasonable to me compared to UK tariffs.

Well, good for you! In my next life, I wanna be as perfect and respectful as our Holy member plumbingandtech

Yipes. I feel like two cents. I read and re-read my post and can't quite figure out where you're getting the negative vibes from. I'll just assume you were referring to all the other hate mail floating around the forums these days.

You can't use the iphone as an ipod without the data plan?

Just caught this, i am sure someone have mentioned here already.... somewhere back in the lost messages.

On http://www.apple.com/iphone/easysetup/rateplans.html for current AT&T users:
"Minimum new 2-year wireless service plan and activation fee required to activate iPhone features, including iPod; plans are subject to AT&T credit approval."

does that mean I can just use the iphone with my current plan WITHOUT getting the web/email iphone data plan and NOT having the ipod feature to work....? totally confused with this one
