Downloaded the iPhone Activation & Sync video and went thru the contracts frame by frame and found the information I'm most interested in:

Early Termination Fee (ETF): $175

You will have 30 days from the date of activation to terminate your contract without an ETF, but you will still have to pay activation ($36) and whatever portion of the monthly service fee you have used.

You can cancel within 3 (three) days of activation and get your activation fee refunded.

I don't really know how phones work in the US (or the UK for that matter lol), but if you cancel the plan, is the phone then unlocked and can be used on any network, or can it still only be used on AT&T?

It is a minor annoyance, but you can send text messages from ATT's website. I'm sure there will be an iPhone webapp soon to send text messages, so the 200 messages will not be a big deal

It's also not a big deal because you can just email people text messages by sending a email to phonenumber@cellularcarrier.com.

Here's a list- http://youneed2see.com/Web/153/Email_to_text_messages

Edit: The cool part about doing it this way is if they reply it goes to your email instead of being sent from a generic catch-all address like it would be if you sent it from the web site.

ARGH, I HATE THE FOLLOWING:

-GEORGE W
-APPLE FANBOYS
-GLOBAL WARMING

MY LIVEJOURNAL FRIENDS LIST WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS AT&T PRICING OUTRAGE!

You know what they say... you are what you hate. So, you are George W. Bush (or a staunch supporter, though you won't admit it), you are a big-time Apple fanboy inside, and that's why you're so angry, and you are one of the larger contributers to pollution. :D

Personally, I dislike all three as well. I may not think that there is a problem with the rates, but really, I don't own a cell phone (something I'm not planning on changing just because the iPhone has come out - though if I were to get a phone, it would be an iPhone), and thus don't really have anything to compare it to. It doesn't seem that bad to me, but like I said, I don't know, and at the moment don't care.

And I don't see an outrage, honestly. It is the way it is, for better or for worse. Apple and AT&T are perfectly entitled to charge whatever they wish. If they wanted, they could charge $1000 a month for the iPhone. It would just mean that a bunch of people wouldn't buy it.

And for all the anger I can see spewing forth: anger leads to hate, hate... leads to suffering. I sense much hate in you. :D

Hmm. Where is my iPod?

Okay we have the iPhone pricing now so the fanboys can stop biting their nails and wondering if they should sell a kidney to pay for it. It is still more expensive than Sprint but it does offer rollover minutes I guess.

My big question is once this BS fanboy hysteria dies down will we be seeing some more rumors about the iPod that is almost 2 years behind schedule for an update, updated iMacs and MacMinis, and upgraded .Mac which is as of now a waste of $100? Can Apple please get back to real business and continue making the things that it is actually good at and making great strides in marketshare?

will the ipod feature be deactivated following termination?

I wonder how easy it'll be to transfer your number to AT&T and if that is done also through iTunes or you have to do that at AT&T and wait in line.

The video shows it in the iTunes activation. You enter the number you want to transfer and it's done in 20 minutes to a few hours. What could be easier?

I really like the look of the $79 price plan. The 900 mins and unlimited off-peak is amazing, combo'd with the unlimited data use on email and web.

Are they 'any-network' minutes? To both mobile and landline? Those might not be coniderations in the states though, compared to here.

Hoping that when the UK eventually get a version, price plans will be similar.

It really seems a shame now that the iPhone doesn't come with 3G...

this is great.. i am an existing att customer, so i will be saving big time.. i get 1000 minutes for $69 right now, plus $5 a month for 200 sms messages.. so, im going to drop my $5 sms package, and get unlimited data and 200 sms for $20 a month, which means, really, i am getting unlimited data for $15 a month.... thats way better than i expected... awesome

I was sad that the 450 minute plan had 5000n/w minutes. Then I counted my n/w minutes I'm using on my current unlimited, and it doesn't even come close . Plus, most of my minutes were spent to my gf who is a cingular member. I'm not currently, so upon switching, the 450 will be more than enough with the free mobile-mobile calling.

Niiiiccceeeee

Is no body noticing my post about the 80GB iPhone, and the fact that the iPod only works with Activation with AT&T?

I thought that would be a big deal.

I just saw the video. Interesting as most likely that's an 80GB iPod it's showing or maybe it's a bug in iTunes.

Edit.. Yea. I'm betting on a bug. At the top next to the iPhone graphic it displays 7 GB.

I've lurked here for quite a while, but had to register for this:
forgive me if this has already been noted, but, did anyone notice on the new "iphone activation video" at Apple.com, when they show the Iphone syncing via itunes, it has an 80 GB hard drive? I pray this isnt just a slip up, but surely it must be, right?

oops, I see several others have posted this info as well. Oh well!

Wow. At this rate, I'll make up my $200 Tmobile early termination fee in about a year and change... I'll have slightly fewer minutes, but I'll have rollover to make up the slack.

It's just going to stink throttling myself the first month to build a buffer when all I want to do is use the phone.

I can easily live with 450 minutes. The data is what I really need. I only have 450 now, I'm paying like 51$ cause I pay for SMS, so if I kill that, my bill should only go up about 13$. This is really something, great plan.

I currently have a Cingular Plan. Any idea if we can switch phones in ITUNES.

RE: Pricing. This is a pretty good deal for current Blackberry or Smartphone users. I currently have Cingular (the 8125 smartphone). Right now my plan is 80 bucks for 600 minutes and unlimited data plus an additional 3 bucks for 200 text. This Iphone plan gives me 300 more minutes and free 200 texts. Already saves me some cash but I might go down to 450 because I have rollover minutes and save myself 20 bucks a month.

Any word on if business discounts are good with IPHONE??

I'm happy. I was on the fence. But now I'm not.

Be realistic...

To describe the collective reaction here to the pricing plans as "they're awesome!" is to read through the posts in this thread wearing rose colored glasses. It's far more accurate to describe the reaction as a collective sigh of relief - relief that Apple/AT&T chose not to charge the way everyone expected. What did everyone expect? The usual Apple premium.

These plans are nothing more than "ok" or perhaps even "pretty good" - but if they were not tied to the iPhone then most people would (justifiably) point out the way better comparable plans from other carriers (e.g. TMo). And yes, including data, nights and weekends, texts, etc.

With these plans, what Apple/AT&T have done is removed a reason *not* to get an iPhone. They haven't created a compelling reason *to* get an iPhone. Not with these plans alone.

Second that. I'm impatient for a new video card in my Mac Pro.

iphone capacity

anyone notice that the iphone on the "activation and sync" video had a capacity of 74.40 GB up from a mere 7.27 GB seconds beforehand?

 hmmm...
