Apple announces iPod nano

I love the Nano, but after that press invite, I was expecting something more revolutionary than evolutionary.

What no firewire? Seems only to be USB 2.0. My Cube doesn't have that what a bummer, would have got one otherwise
Looks that way from the tech specs. The shuffle and nano are USB only.

I see now why they had the Student Union promo... how is that going to work? The promo was: buy a mac, get a free mini, but now there are no more minis! And I thought the promo went until Sept 25...

Too bad they did away with the minis, they were adorable. But I guess the trend is thinner and smaller... the Nanos are really cute though.

This won't kill the shuffle. It's too expensive and it doesn't work as a USB drive and can't be used on a PC and Mac without a reformat. I'll keep my shuffle which I don't worry about harming. I would definitely worry about harming this thing and I don't think it comes with a lanyard. too bad about the loss of 2GB at the same $249 price point. Overall I think it's a great product though. $199 for 500 songs seems like too much though.

the ipod nano: it's ok and everything, but apple is really tempting fate by killing the hugely successful mini and all it's colors. all my friends really loved them and wanted them (some got one, others have been waiting). i just got a pink and a silver mini for my sister and her new husband for a wedding gift and there's no way in hell that they would be as excited about the nano.

regardless, i hope apple sells ********s of them so there's more money to pour into r&d for the pro video apps.
The nano is made of a plastic/poly material. They can introduce color versions for Nano 2.

Black and White give a nice intro option selection. Nano 2, many color versions -- more than the mini.

The styling is great, the position in the family a little odd....

I like the fact it can store photos too, and the no skip feature means it's probably going to find a lot of favour with serious runners etc.

Never met an iPod I didn't like... :D

I am just going to say it...here it comes..... SEXY Little Beast!!! There i said it. Now where did i leave my wallet *runs off to search* :D :D

Well im now in a quandry..... size/looks/storage are ideal for me..... but the battery life is only 14 hours on paper, who knows what reality will yield!

It is really gorgeous though!

I hope so. If they come up with a lanyard that will let me use 3rd party headphones, I'll buy the nano that second.

Agreed. The lanyard is probably what I love most about the shuffle, but I can't use Apple earphones (too big).

black

Beautiful design, the black is remarkable - does this mean that black will be returning for 'books?

SLOW and no FireWire

If it's the standard dock connector you can get a firewire cable though. I brought a 30Gb Photo and it was a USB connection but I just brought a Firewire cable and it works fine.

Edit: No you're right it does just say USB doesn't it....hmmm

Absolutely beautiful...

another triumph of industrial design. I wouldn't buy one personally, but it is a stunning piece of design.

WOW looks awesome, i think i may have to invest in a 4gig black iPod Nano, although i am a bit dissapointed by the meager storage capacity,

Very cool. I have a 60gb iPod photo and have no use for one of these, but I want one anyway. Apple's real good at that :)

What's slow? USB2? No it isn't. It may be slower than firewire in practice but not THAT much.

Flash memory is slow. And with only USB 1.1 on my Cube it would be even slower.

and next tuesday!

"Introducing iPod Atom! It's the size of a marble and holds 50 songs!....hey we put word iPod on it, you'll buy it..."

So... they killed off the selling-like-hotcakes Mini (which gave you 2x or 1.5x the storage and 4 hours more battery life--IIRC--at the same price points) but they're keeping the U2 "Special" Edition around? Mm-hmm.

At least with the price/storage decrease, they can later "improve" the line back to what it used to be.
