It will still work with plain old USB 1.1 ports in your Cube, fear not... However, I see a micro niche market now for a USB 2 <> FireWire400 converter forming.. Damn I hate USB.

So I guess it will just be really slow. I defo agree with a USB2/Firewire converter. Does depress me a bit that Apple occasionally abandons superior technology for the mass market cr@p. (Think ADC, now firewire, what next the single button mouse?!?!)

I was hovering over the order button until I noticed that it doesn't support Firewire at all... It takes forever to update my 1G shuffle on my TiBook, never mind how long it will take to transfer 4x that...

I understand not packing in the cable, but not making it at all compatible... Too bad...

I guess the next generation of full size iPods will probably drop Firewire support all together.

Firewire lost the high-speed serial port war just like Betamax lost the video tape war. Better get used to USB dude...

So much for the arguments that the nano would add yet another iPod line...it more or less consolidated the mini into the regular iPod look. That's one fiiine price point :D. Now to buy up the discontinued mini to further complete my iPod line. Mwa-ha-ha.

Well I hate to say it but it looks hideous, I'm so pleased I got my 6gb blue mini only 2 weeks ago, I knew the update was coming but to get rid of the mini form factor entirely, and replace it with this rectangle seems like a bad move.

that is mental! WOW! oh wow. it looks like somebody just shrunk the iPod. oh GOD i want one :( i hate you Apple. this is amazing!
VERY good price. sweet lord the price is stunning. £139 WITHOUT a student discount for te 4Gb model. i want. but im not going lower than 6gb.

smashing design apple. im very happy

You just cannot moan about this

For my money, this is the most beautiful thing that Apple have ever given birth to.

And value for money? It's only 40% more than I paid for a 1Gb Shuffle this time last year - with twice the songs and a colour display.

I don't need one ... but I'm off to Oxford St. first thing tomorrow with my credit card.

Ahh...

Time to begin lobbying my wife for authorization to replace my first-gen [sic] 10GB iPod...

Is it a collector's item yet?

wow wow wow

I feel like im at the climax of a harry potter book...

mine mine mine.

(will they make the new feautures on the nano availble on other ipods via software update) WHAT, nows not the time for such a question, the night is young, its time to hit the store!!

Right ... this nano supports the standard iPod connector right? The 30 pin one?

So does that mean a Firewire connector will work with it?

Because, and this may seem lame, the £15 Firewire cable, + the NanoDock, + the 4GB Nano takes my order up to £181 ex. VAT, for which I have an £18. ex. VAT off coupon.

Nano looks really good.. but buy this when i have a 10gig iPod... dont think so, but that is just me anyway.

iPod Nano deserves to do really well.

The regular iPods have up to 18 hours.. but larger battery.

Up to 14hrs battery - that's good. I guess using Flash helped out there.

!!!

Guess which new product is getting the most comments in!
yep..
this wonderful piece of engineering, the ipod nano.

The black model is gorgeous. I want it, but I can't help but think that I can get 16GB more of storage (4,000 more songs) for just $50 extra..

I have a dilemma.. :(

Gorgeous!!! :D

This will kill the shuffle.

Nah. I would never spend $200 on an iPod. That's why I have a shuffle. I only use it once or twice a week, so I couldn't justify that kind of expense. I imagine there are a lot of people like me.

It looks beautiful........... shame about the storage capacity though :( The 4GB nano is £10 more than the 6GB mini here in the UK.

Steve Jobs just popped up on CNBC, Ron Insana's show. Right now talking about the effect of Hurrican Katrina on technology, Cingular's efforts to restore service in the affected areas. SJ just explained how the phone ISN'T an iPod, but a phone with iTunes.

CNBC is screwing up saying the Nano is as thin as a credit card. DAMN! That thing is small. Seeing him hold it up... absolutely amazing.

Now they're talking about Pixar and Disney and a possible deal.

And that's it. Wicked. :D

Well... Never thought they'd name it 'nano', with Creative already using the name for their Zen. Guess I was wrong.

With that said..

I WANT THE BLACK ONE! NOW!

War of the iPods

Just ordered a white one, 4GB (it was only 50$CAD more than the 2GB one, eh).

In about 8 to 12 days, the unholy war begins: 3rd gen. 10GB iPod vs 1GB iPod shuffle vs 4GB iPod nano.

It's "huge, B&W screen with 10GB" vs "extremely small with no navigation 1GB" vs "extremely small with color display and 4GB".

I'm betting on my iPod nano winning it all, with a replacement once they get the nano to 8-12GB.

Granted, my library is more than what the nano can handle, but it's also more than my 10GB can handle (about 13GB), so I'm used to sync a partial library.

What's next? PowerBook nano?
