what's "great"

I finally got the chance to play around with one of these at a Local Apple Store, it really is as great as it looks. :D
What's "great" about it - that it plays music?

Is it "greater" than a mini? How?

Is it "greater" than a Maxi-Pod? How?

Other than the obvious (having a screen) is it greater than the Shuttle? How? (It's OK to say that "it's just a shuttle with a screen")

The form factor is nice, but all these orgasmic descriptions of the Ipod Nano just make me wonder what y'all do in the rest of your life...

I hope you mean a Shuffle right? Just checking.

Right - sorry 'bout the typo... "Shuttle" and "Shuffle" are more or less the same, in my quick typing.... I lose track of which one is the "pocket 'pod"....

Most people just want a laptop as a tool. They'd prefer that it "blend into the background" of their lives.

Just a few need to shout "I'm different - I have an Apple".

And yet Apple do seem to try to make equipment that looks cool and different to all the rest so I guess they're appealling to the market that wants to look different.

I didn't buy a Powerbook to be different. However, I'm damn proud to display that I'm an apple owner.

It was either that or slap one of the Apple stickers on my forehead. ;-)

This follows on from my previous message really but as I said I think Apple are making stand-out equipment that have the wow factor.

People getting excited over a gadget doesn't mean that's all they have in their life to get excited about. :-s

Been in work about 3 hours and got the Nano on charge on my desk. I've had 5 people stop and pass comments about it. People like "shiny things".

So, I don't think people having "orgasmic" reactions to the Nano is unnatural.

You don't get excited about it, then that's fine too.

Steve

Mine (4GB iPod nano black, A1137) arrived this morning. It is now the geek must have thing at work.

This isn't a mere portable music player. This is a design masterpiece. Until I held it in my hand, I did not know how different this player is.

I have one issue - it isn't easy to pull out the sync cable when the headphones are plugged in as well, due to the squeeze to remove issue. However having the headphone socket on the bottom does mean you can remove cable clutter on the desk or keep the iPod the correct way up! Also the headphones and other cables should be black for the black nano!

I've named my iPod 'monolith', probably like several thousand other people out there ...

(Re: Randomization and iPods)

First off, it's not possible to generate anything completely random in a computer algorithm, or at least, that's how I remember it from my computer science classes. However, pseudo-randomization programs come pretty close.

Second, the articles you cited actually don't provide any evidence that the iPod is indeed random. All it states is that Jobs says he talked to his engineers, and they told him it was random. That doesn't make it so.

Part of the problem is that you can't prove that the iPod is random or not random from the results; you can only take a collection of results and calculate a probability of them being random. Also, the main problem - that songs from a given artist tend to cluster, especially around the beginning of a playlist - is maddeningly difficult to prove using probabilities. The other problem - that of predeliction for playing certain songs - is a little easier from at least an anecdotal standpoint. As an experiment, I decided to stop using the skip feature at work about 3 months ago. (Since the skip feature keeps a song from being recorded as played in the playlist.) Three months of around 8 hours of playtime a day, and still a full 1/3 of my 3368 songs haven't been played once. (Randomization restarted each morning - if I hadn't done that, I would have indeed eventually played all the songs.) That's unlikely, and almost certainly not random. Hooray for iTunes 5, where you can at least artificially prevent clustering of songs.

Dave

This was posted over at Slashdot. Somebody left for the weekend and they let iTunes shuffle feature play over songs tagged to only play 1 sec.

When they came back and analyzed the playcounts, it was indeed random enough that all the songs had similar playcounts. It's people own predilection to certain songs that they feel it wasn't random.

Apple's more random setting actually lowers the randomness probability.

You're kidding?!

It was out for delivery at 7.45 and they can't deliver until tomorrow?

I'm feeling your frustration. I think it'll be worth the wait though. :)

I can't stop playing with mine and yes... I am talking about the nano.

Well this was the latest:

12 Sep 2005 13:40 East Midlands Consignment In Warehouse

So it looks like it was set to be delivered, but it was then returned to the warehouse,
Ho-hum, with a little luck I'll be in tomorrow morning, if not I'll wake my brother up, I've told him that he can have my mini as an incentive :p

With Apple patience is a very important quality. Good luck and enjoy.

Have my Nano. Love it.

Okay I got my Nano (black 4GB personalized) today at 10am. I ordered it around 5pm the day they came out. Shipped directly from China. Ordered free shipping and it was air freighted to me.... bonus!

WOW.

This is so ***** cool. You will *not* be dissapointed. I have 2 green minis and they seem "old and busted" next to this Nano. Hot. Hot. Hot.

Well, I am a designer by trade. I appreciate and prioritize design in my life. I enjoy thoughtful GUI's and trendy, clean, modern design. The nano was designed for people like me. Case in point-- I didn't buy an iPod until the Mini came out. The reason was not technological. It was for it's design and form factor. The same holds true for the Nano.

Really, if you just handle one of these and play with it for a minute or two you will want one. Well, let me qualify that: you'd want one if you were even partially inclined to purchase an mp3 player.

My only gripe with the iPod nano is that they put the audio jack on the bottom of the device. What's that about?
No other way to do it. It's so thin, you wouldn't have room for both the screen and the jack.

The mystery is solved, I just checked the TNT tracker page (again):

12 Sep 2005 09:38 East Midlands Not Home On Delivery Attempt To Residential Address

It seems that despite the fact that both my parents were home, they were busy feeding our ducks and hens in the garden

Oh well, patience is a virtue... :D

This looks like a lawsuit bait technique to me. Have apple sue them over the "nano plus', and sue back about the menus. This is certainly no competition to the nano. $150 for 1Gb, and it's not even an iPod? And that it weighs 50% more, is twice as fat, and doesn't have a color screen. Pshaw. They shouldn't even bother.

Note that the Nano Plus is Creative's second generation Nano - they've been using the name for some time.

Either Apple's product naming people are clueless, or The Steve is taunting Creative.

BTW, the Nano Plus is lighter than the Ipod Nano, is only slightly larger (28 cm3 vs 25 cm3), and has an FM radio with 32 presets, FM recording, a microphone for voice recording, and 18 hours battery life using standard user-replaceable AAA batteries. ($112 for 1 GB version)
Didn't know about the name. That's an interesting legal place... but, there's really no comparison. The Creative machine is actually 50% heavier (with battery - let's face it, what use is it without the battery). And, it's not an iPod. You may be able to buy a Kia with better specs and at a lower price than a similar Honda, but you're still driving a Kia. :)

Which means you'd be driving a vehicle made by Hyundai, which is rated #2 for quality & customer satisfaction, only behind Lexus (ie: above Honda); all and all, not a bad thing to be driving a Kia ;)

Then again, I love Hondas, and am just being a brat :p

On topic...

The movie/music player by Creative DOES look very interesting, however $400 is a bit pricey for me.

I find the iPod Nano to be the perfect device for playing music, and will be getting one next month.

Sure, and you'd put a $30 Linksys switch in the same place as a $14000 Cisco Catalyst switch. Because they're both made by Cisco, right?

A friend of mine has a Kia - it's always in the shop for recalls or pieces falling off it. It's 1-wheel drive system is wonderful in the snow unless you want to actually go anywhere. The guys at the Subaru/Kia dealer say they're seeing every Kia in for warranty every few months - the Subaru's maybe once or twice.

You can put an Audi TT shell on a VW Golf but everybody is going to know what you did.
