A better I touch

Actually I'm happy that Apple offered these upgrades. I thought they would come out with new models and discontinue the model I just bought my wife for Christmas-good to see they are still supporting the itouch

$20 for apps that should have been on the device from day one?

I sure hope no one is dumb enough to pay it.

(and I am _SO_ glad I decided to go with the Nokia tablet family instead; probably a futile hope to wait for Apple to ever release a decent MID ... but I still have a distant hope for a MID that matches my Mac)

I've been trying to get the upgrade that I paid for installed for 3 hours now, I've restored my iPod twice, synced about 30 times, I found the .ita file, tried dragging it to itunes and syncing again and again, on 3 different computers... and it just plain refuses to install. and I'm pissed off as hell that I paid $20 for something that will not work

I don't like how Apple is charging me $20 to upgrade.
I need Google Maps on my iPod touch. Want, really, but I'd use it enough to need it. And, I'm going to need it when I visit Tokyo soon.
but it costs $20.

It's a smart move, in a sense. Christmas just happened, a buttload of new people with iPod touches, who are bound to get excited over these new apps.

Which they should have included in the first place.

So if I went to the Apple Store this weekend to buy an ipod touch, it would already have the iphone apps on it? I wouldn't have to buy it for 20 bucks?

WebApps are just little trinkety things that you don't actually download, you use them on the internet. They're technically less of a real application and more a modified webpage.

So if SDK isnt coming until February, then what's all this about??

http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/webapps/

Are these not 3rd party apps for the iPod Touch/iPhone?! And they look as if theyre free (once you download the $20 upgrade).

Been playing with the new mail app on the Touch, love it!

Would I rather have it for free? Of course!

Were the upgrades worth $20? Absolutely!

I am sorry, this is bullsh*t. I didn't really understand early adopters of the iPhone complaining at their price-drop; the iPhone is hardware, and hardware prices drop all the time, get over it. But, software updates? Especially with apps that should have been on the Touch to begin with? And when they are free on new ones with identical hardware?? I love apple, but I fear that as they get too big, like any giant company, they are beginning to show monopoly pricing schemes. This is like charging for automatic updates to Leopard. Notice that they aren't charging for the :apple:TV software upgrade... because they make money off of the increase in rentals. But, the only way to make money on me checking the weather is to charge me for the ability to do so. Apple is pissing me off with their overpriced monopoly. Can't wait til the trust is busted and OSX can run on a PC.

EAT ME APPLE!

On a side note, I'm hoping I don't cave and buy an Air.

Update: I finally got it installed, if you have your sync prefs set to manual, change it to automatic, then drag the .ita file in ~/Library/iTunes/Mobile Applications to itunes, and hit the sync button (you may not need to even drag the file to iTunes, but that's the way I did it)

I have a question about the chapter selection for movies. Does this feature work for movies that I've ALREADY burned from a DVD using handbrake?

At pocketrockets, it seems so. I had a video that has two chapters - they showed up.

To anyone who updated to 1.1.3 without the $20 update (What can I say? I had an extra $20 in credits.), I'm trying to do my own review of the software update. What does 1.1.3 add for free?

Apple are being tight arses - the upgrade should be free.

Do Touches purchased in the future get this new firmware?

Oh, and Time Capsule? Now there's a bait and switch. You can't use Time Machine over a network connection UNLESS you buy our box. That's ridiculous.

I think that's part because the system need 802.11n to work, the 802.11g used populary now is not powerful enough, I wouldn't blame that if they move the price down to 149$ for a 320G version, the box is already making big money

When he said $20 I was shocked but didn't really care as I had jailbroken mine and already had the iPhone apps. But when I saw that touches now come with these apps........ are you kidding me?

I adhere to the notion that when you buy a product, you are going into it having that decision based on what the product is capable of, what it does. If it's worth that price to you, you pay it (for me it wasn't worth the added switching fee at that time). That's why when they gave consumers $100 back on the iPhone I thought that was EXTREMELY generous of Apple because if you wanted it and felt $599 was worth it, then you can't complain. Like with most tech products, early movers should expect prices to drop rapidly and not complain. The idea that you buy something and expect it's manufacturer to just continually update and improve it.......well, this is Apple so I can't say we don't expect such. But any free improvements that aren't bug fixes should be welcomed with gratitude.

I've been looking forward to what is to come with the released sdk. I bought my touch as an early x-mas gift for myself and I liked it very much. Never planned on jailbreaking it, but after a few weeks, I did a little research and saw that I could always revert it or, "virginize" back and decided to go for it. Since then I can tell you I LOVE this iPod now. I would say the 5 iPhone apps would be worth the price of a pizza, yeah, even though the Weather and Mail apps are the only ones I use, it's nice having this device be capable of what it is now.

I really just want to let people out there know that are thinking of jailbreaking, it's really not that bad of a process (took me 2 hours I think and there are some really good step by steps out there now). Looking back, I can't believe I waited as long as I did to do so. True, some of the apps you can load etc are corny, but Instant Messaging, solitaire, and sodoku are worth the (minimal) effort alone. And later if you feel a little more adventurous you can customize the bejesus out of it if you choose to.

But seriously, I love this iPod now and it's a lot of fun to periodically check and see what is new out there from the community. I look forward to Apple producing new apps and games that I will GLADLY pay for (I paid $5 a pop for games on my old iPod, most of which were unplayable), but $20 for what those buying an iPod 34 days after me are getting for free........... yeah. I love you Steve but.......

The 1.1.3 without $20 upgrade included the iPhone looking dock (metal), "bug fixes," and a + sign for bookmarks in safari, and a magnifying glass for google in safari as well.

Thanks for asking my question BTW, I'll prbably have more for you regarding what the $20 upgrade can and cannot do before I buy it.

Accounting - ********.

Its an excuse to extract more money out of the consumer, plain and simple.

iPhone gets new features - and that isn't a paid upgrade.

AppleTV gets new features - again, no paid upgrade.

Some people bend over to Apple and excuse them for it.

This isn't really something you can blame on Apple. If the accounting was set up right in the beginning to allow for feature additions then they are obligated under federal law to charge for the new features. I don't like it and frankly many a leader of publicly traded companies don't like it neither. But; and it is a BIG BUTT, it is the law.

You are absolutely right to be appalled by the need to account for and charge for the feature additions, but Apple is the wrong place to raise the issue. Go to capitol hill and get into the face of a congressman or two.

That 4 billion dollar stack of cash they have in some warehouse isn't enough.

I'm happy for those with products receiving free updates (the appleTV one was welcomed I'm sure) but come on. The only costs they incurred giving touch users those five apps was in the time it took someone to come up with the number 20.
