Pretty uncommon scenario in the developed world nowadays, so I fail to see how such an eventuality would necessitate carrying cash around 24/7.

Also, Apple Pay doesn't share your name with the merchant. That's kinda the whole point.

Mother nature is unpredictable and more so even today. Yes there is forecasts but things can change with anything weather related in a moments notice even before a weather alert is sent out.

What places do not accept cash ?
The latest place I encountered was the license plate renewal facility attached to the vehicle emissions testing facility. Where I live, vehicles four+ years old have to pass a free emissions test every two years before the state will let you renew the plates. They sell renewals right there, but they don't take cash. I watched a guy try to pay with cash two weeks ago and they refused. More and more restaurants here are posting "we are cashless" signs in their places.

Just to be clear, you do not have to unlock your phone for anyone.

This is a real concern. I think powering the phone off is best because biometrics cannot be used before first unlock with the passcode and the data is encrypted so it is very difficult if not impossible to access.
IANAL, but my understanding is that they can't compel you to give up a password, but they can and do compel people to use biometric unlocks. For folks that have a concern there, pressing the power button on an iPhone five times will kick your phone back to requiring a passcode without requiring cycling the power.

Yes. Wonder if there a way to figure out if it hurts their business any ?
Of course it does because their competition (at least a half dozen other pizza joints) accepts CC, Apple Pay, etc. And I refuse to go to the ATM just to buy pizza, I'm sure I'm not the only one. Whatever this place saved/saves in CC fees, the price of their pizza is still the same as if not more than everyone else.

And now places are rounding to nickels because pennies are no longer being minted. I know Canada did this a long time ago. IMHO cash is a hassle and if it is lost it is gone forever. Unfortunately there are still many people who can't use debit or credit because of their financial situations, so cash may never go away completely.

"Technically" doesn't cut it with this administration. If citizens don't stand up and speak out, citizens will be next. Don't count on being able to hard-lock in time. Real life presents situations that upend plans, expectations and imagination. A simple-enough example would be a demand to show your identification a second time.
Well we’ll see how it goes I guess. I don’t think doing digital ID means they automatically have abilities to take your phone, any more than they do now. You can disable FaceID on your phone as it is and still use this, though I suppose you’re gonna say well then they have you on video putting your passcode in, unless you shield the keypad with your other hand, you totally can do that but have to remember to do it. So if you’re super worried then don’t bring any electronic device, except for a burner phone, and see how that goes.

It's not clear to me whether the five button presses has the same effect as powering down. Yes it disables biometrics but not certain it locks the phone out from forensics tools the same way as a power down does (BFU vs. AFU). The forensics guys might know?

Well never mind me then.

iPhones now reboot in some circumstances and turn a AFU into a BFU.

I did. But that does not guarantee it is ONLY on iOS 26.
huh?? It was introduced as an ios26 feature, and line one clearly says:
  • An iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26.1 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later running watchOS 26.1 or later
what's not to understand here? was it the 'or later' that confused you :)

When your passport is lost/stolen overseas this might make it easier to get a replacement.

We already have pictures of our passports in a Note, just in case.

Soon, Global Entry?

Note that this apparently counts as a RealID, if it's TSA-accepted. Interesting that they trust Apple's secondary authentication.

Tried scanning my back cover 100 times no luck
is this an attempt at humor?

assuming you have a new Passport with a chip, you dont scan the back cover...you set your phone on the inside of the back cover (where the barcode is located). It is a very slow scan. dont move the phone and wait for confirmation its complete. It takes up to 30 seconds

“Im not using this because, um. PRIVACY! I pay cash for everything so the man can’t track me”.

But you carry a smart phone. Or have some sort of digital assistant in your home, or drive a vehicle with GPS and telematics in it, or walk around in public with your face exposed.

Any ILLUSION of privacy you have is more dangerous than understanding that said privacy went out the window a long time ago and adjusting to live in that world.

Go on with your false sense of security while every EZ pass (or similar system) photographs you and your license plate whenever you pass through it whether you have a transponder or not.

See those small tan boxes on poles with solar panels on them? Those are license plate readers. They’re active 24/7 and the gubment can use them to track your comings and goings. No warrant as you have no expectation of privacy in public places.

Combine that with your cell phone RSSI I formation and you’re pretty much trackable wherever you go. Once they can narrow the search to a smaller area, it’s only a matter of using facial recognition to figure it out.

Ever watch that FBI show on CBS? What the federal government has is at least 2 generations better than that. I’ve seen it in action and it’s pretty scary.

Privacy? You have none oh sweet summer child. It died around the time computers and surveillance cameras combined with wireless Internet via cell connection caught up to the Patriot Act.

By the way, everyone’s valid passports have a chip in it. 2007 is when they rolled it out to all new passports and passports are valid for 10 years for adults, 5 years for 16 and under, so unless you’re trying an expired passport, it’ll have the chip (and it won’t work for expired passport, tells you it has to be valid).

I read on Hacker News or something that it does exit AFU and dumps the encryption keys from memory. It's a good point though. I'm going to see if I can locate some more detailed confirmation of it.

Regardless, photo IDs are tracked by TSA anyway. You need Real ID now, states verify your information for Real ID. Your picture is matched to a database and you are matched to your picture.

All the tracking is already here and if you want to fly on a plane you get tracked regardless.
