"Technically" doesn't cut it with this administration. If citizens don't stand up and speak out, citizens will be next. Don't count on being able to hard-lock in time. Real life presents situations that upend plans, expectations and imagination. A simple-enough example would be a demand to show your identification a second time.
Cut the nonsense.

By the way, everyone’s valid passports have a chip in it. 2007 is when they rolled it out to all new passports and passports are valid for 10 years for adults, 5 years for 16 and under, so unless you’re trying an expired passport, it’ll have the chip (and it won’t work for expired passport, tells you it has to be valid).
I thought it was revised in 2022...my passport was just renewed this year and it's defiantly not the same as my previous passport. Regardless I find you have to set the phone on top of the page and wait up to 30 seconds without moving it to get it to scan

I can get it through the first step scanning the photo, but get an error "unable to read chip"

My passport is 9 years old...maybe I don't have a chip.
I have the same problem, but I know mine has a chip because if I look at the front cover, you’ll see the little square icon at the bottom.

Not sure what you’re saying, the chip was in place for new passports from 2007 on. Thus all valid passports had it in 2017 and later. Nothing changed in 2022 that I can find, regarding the chip. Pretty sure it’s also an international standard to have all passports with chips.

No thanks to this DIGITAL ID crap. First the government gives us the REAL ID on our state's drivers license without our consent. And by the way REAL ID isa federal/national ID. Sneaky bastards. Which will eventually become global. But you still have the option to go to your local DMV/DPS to revert back to the traditional state's drivers iicense and I highly recommend that you do. People need to see the danger behind this move towards DIGITAL ID. It will be used in conjustion with AI and cloud servers (Patent 666 by Microsoft) along with the one final missing piece which is the chip they want to implant into our bodies. Without this, we won't be able to work, buy, or function in society at all. Don't let the government fool you into thinking it's for your "safety and convenience". It's actually for their benefit and a way for them to control our lives. They want to create and put us all in these so-called "smart cities", I like to call it digital prison. It's so they can track our every move, and read our deepest thoughts. At that time, t'll be too late to say no. We will be stripped of all our rights/freedoms and privacy.
I agree .. some people might need confinement.

But otoh “the government” has all this information already. They can already do the things you fantasize about.

looks like they just updated the security:

They did make a change in 2021, per the State Department.

The chip is embedded in the passport's back cover. It cannot be seen, however.

The US passport was recently redesigned (2022 as people above mentioned) but it is still biometric as was the generation before it. If it has the biometric logo shown here on the bottom of the front cover, then there is a chip embedded inside the back cover.

My 2015 passport expires in December. It has the chip. Can’t put in because it is out for replacement, haha.

Can someone upload a photo of the location where you found your chip because mine‘s not being found anywhere

post a photo of the inside back cover page...it should have a barcode. Place your phone on top of this page, you may have to move it around until it sees it. then dont move it

Of course it does because their competition (at least a half dozen other pizza joints) accepts CC, Apple Pay, etc. And I refuse to go to the ATM just to buy pizza, I'm sure I'm not the only one. Whatever this place saved/saves in CC fees, the price of their pizza is still the same as if not more than everyone else.

And now places are rounding to nickels because pennies are no longer being minted. I know Canada did this a long time ago. IMHO cash is a hassle and if it is lost it is gone forever. Unfortunately there are still many people who can't use debit or credit because of their financial situations, so cash may never go away completely.
Yeah I would not go to the ATM or back home to have to go get $20 to $30 for a lunch or dinner.

I really don't know how so many people trust their phones for everything. ID, wallet, now passport. Easily you can lose the phone or someone steal it and you immediately lose everything. Even if it somehow the data is safe, you are left without any way of using the "papers".

To each their own I guess.
Just about every phone out here has Biometric Verification, pin/password authentication, ‘Secure Enclave’ Chips, lost mode features, etc. There are several roadblocks to keep thieves from accessing it.

To me, I would say the modern smartphone is now more secure than a wallet that can be stolen or scanned through your pocket without any sort of confirmation/notification.

Yes, they changed the fibers, but didn’t change the chip (from chip to not chip, not sure about the data on the chip but clearly a pre-2021 passport will still have the chip since they had it for 14 years prior).
google says Chip was "upgraded" in 2022...could be fake news though

New security features are being introduced

Passports will now include added technology to ensure security and decrease fraud. Catching up with many other countries, U.S. passport changes mean that new passports will include a data chip that can provide all your personal info upon scanning it onto a computer.

It’s a step forward towards not having to have your wallet on you? You could have said the same thing about Apple Pay in 2014. Now I carry one physical credit card on me just in case.

Don’t want to use it? Then don’t add your passport! What a concept!

This is probably the best way to look at it. They are on the cutting edge of what will eventually replace our physical IDs, Wallets, Credit cards.
