post a photo of the inside back cover page...it should have a barcode. Place your phone on top of this page, you may have to move it around until it sees it. then dont move it
If you place your phone exactly where it shows in the example video then you can’t miss it. Inside the page of the back cover with the phone mostly off of the passport. Mine picked it up right away and told me not to move it when it was reading it.

Everything has to have a starting point. According to the article, at launch, Apple said Digital IDs are accepted at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 airports in the U.S. 250 isn’t a “few” airports.
I literally have used this exclusively at airports. Never had a problem. Just make sure you hit confirm to send it after scanning.

google says Chip was "upgraded" in 2022...could be fake news though

New security features are being introduced

Passports will now include added technology to ensure security and decrease fraud. Catching up with many other countries, U.S. passport changes mean that new passports will include a data chip that can provide all your personal info upon scanning it onto a computer.
It’s basically a contactless smart card. Those periodically get security updates to make it harder to get at any sensitive data. But they probably present the same data (your info, name and birthday) when read regardless, just better protected so someone can’t just run commands and get sensitive secure element information out of it, like to make copies.

Isn't this just a special version of the iPhotos app? Why not just use iPhotos on your iPhone OS device instead? I can use a photo of it on Android for the same effect.

huh?? It was introduced as an ios26 feature, and line one clearly says:
  • An iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26.1 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later running watchOS 26.1 or later
what's not to understand here? was it the 'or later' that confused you :)
There is nothing confusing to me. No need to sound so rude about it.
Just pointing out that there were times that the articles may not cover all older OS versions despite they may also have said feature.

This is about as useless as the Invites app.

You can't use it as ID, few airports take it, you can't travel internationally with it. What's the point?
Its the start, global travel will take long time, might have agreements with specific contraries e.g. US to UK routes

Did you miss the part that says "Digital IDs are accepted at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 airports in the U.S."?

*cough*

Go try a few . . . it's a comically-Sisyphean adventure 🤷‍♂️

TSA Reps are not often noted for their networking acumen. If you're (personally) TSA-Pre, you may gain some traction; nevertheless, make sure to bring your physical ID.

Fixed.

They are actually surprisingly up to date...you scan a Real ID now and most every airport, and this is most likely the same technology.

If you're going to complain about it at least get your facts straight, this can be used as ID at the TSA checkpoints that allow it. Things like this take time to roll out and become more widely adopted. This is just the beginning. Remember Apple Pay? I used to only be able to use it at a single coffee shop and now I can use it almost everywhere.

Public beta...aka the default level for most Apple software these days. I get you have to start somewhere, but deliver a 1.0 and iterate.
This is a 1.0. The laws to allow this just recently passed. Android has an equivalent coming too (or it may be out).

Took me two attempts to add to my iPhone. On both attempts (the second being successful), I had selected to add to both iPhone and Apple Watch, but it never appeared on Watch.

I went into the Watch app (under Wallet/Apple Pay) and saw an option to add my Digital ID (from iPhone) to my Apple Watch. It didn’t need to scan my passport again, but it required more face scan verification. I’ve tried that 3 times now, and it keeps telling me that I need to complete the verification again

Maybe Apple Watch support isn’t quite ready? Everything running the latest (non-beta) OS

There's no Scan button but it does work. Make sure your password is not expired. Also, only scan that one page containing your information and not two unfolded pages.
The process is simple and intuitive, once completed it will verify your identity and send you a message through Wallet app when it's ready to use.
Maybe don't be condescending. My passport is not expired, and I'm not trying to scan both pages. It's not intuitive and easy to use. It literally does nothing when I frame my passport info page in the frame on my phone.

Make sure not to cover the machine readable zone at the bottom of the ID page with your thumb or something. That's really the only thing that it needs to read with the camera (the MRZ contains a code that is required to unlock and read the data from the passport's RFID chip).

I've had the exact same issue, and I was also having the issue with my driver's license, both refusing to add the ID to the watch. In the end I unpaired the watch and configured it as a new watch. After a couple of attempts (in the end I also had to remove the passport ID from the phone) I was able to add the passport ID and the drivers license to the watch. I am not sure what was stuck. It seems to me it is a bug. Just sharing that I had to go a bit to the extremes to get this to work. To summarize, what I think worked for me was to unpair watch, remove IDs from iPhone, pair the watch again. Wait until the wallet app gets installed to watch, try to re-enroll on IDs on the iPhone and ask for the ID to be installed to Apple Watch. Wait until the whole thing goes through. It took some more time for the IDs to show in the watch. I had to be a bit patient. I think on my last attempt I didn't have to manually add the IDs from the watch app wallet settings entry in the iPhone. I think it added the IDs automatically to the watch.
