In the middle...

I just bough a refurbished DP G4 1.25 from apple on Sept. 23. Did I know that Panther would probably come out sooner than later from reading through these forums? Yes! However, I had little choice since the machine I bought seemed to be in high demand because they get sold very, very quickly, and I was patiently waiting for more to get in stock. So what it comes down to is I just spent $1500 on a computer 2 weeks before they announce Panther. Do I feel like I should get a price break on Panther? Yes! But, if I did have the money to spend I wouldn't mind purchasing this upgrade...I just do not have any more money! All in all, I'm not pissed, angry or frustrated with apple, but I would be happier if they did give some of us a bit of a break for buying our machines so close to the release date! For some of us $130 is not a lot of money and for some of us it is! So let's stop bashing the people who can't afford this upgrade and feel that they have been mistreated and let's also stop bashing the people who think this purchase is no big deal! Can't we all just get along?!?!?!?!
 
I dont really see how anyone can perdict the release of any of Apple's products. Rumors sites are just that, rumor sites. They are normally waaay off. (New PB to be release today...no next week...no, ummm maybe next month..)

all we knew about Panther was "before the end of the year", come on, give out more info than that.
 
WE HAVE OPTIONS...

OPTION FOR THE RICH: Call daddy up and tell him you need more money to buy Mac OS X version 10.3 "Panther" for $130. (Don't forget to remind him to pay your tuition and car payments).

OPTION FOR THE INDIVIDUEL WITH HOOK-UP’s: Just ask a Student friend who can take advantage of their current university or college affiliation to buy Mac OS X version 10.3 "Panther” at a lower price for you $69.00.

OPTION FOR THE POOR: Wait for Student who took advantage of their current university or college affiliation to buy Mac OS X version 10.3 "Panther” at a lower price of $69.00 and rob him (But you’ll feel less guilt if it’s the spoiled rich brat who paid full price).

Just trying to ease-up the tension on this forums, so please don't take offense and feel free to add more options!
 
OPTION FOR THE CRIMINALLY AGGRESSIVE: Break into Apple's HQ, steal a copy of Panther (but nothing else) and spray on the wall in 3 meter high letters "I would have bought a G5 PowerBook if you'd made one - could I have had a discount upgrade then" or some such. Perhaps add "Get some new clothes, Jobs".

well, if you feel it's "more" ok to rob a millionaire (i don't, because i feel it's wrong to rob anyone, period.) then when you make your $$$, please don't complain about someone ever stealing your money.

i shouldn't have asked if it's "more ok," i should have asked if it's ok to rob anyone in any context...

if you are a student, then i imagine you are "poor" even if you spend no money whatsoever on beer and other luxury items? who's to judge how much money you have and how "poor" you really are? are you really "poor" when you are buying an upgrade OS that is completely optional?

man, this is so off topic... 🙄
 
Morality question

Ok then, which is worse:

1) I purchase Jag for $129 and install it on my two computers (obvious piracy right?)

2) I purchase a family pack with 5 licenses, install two on my two systems, and also upgrade my father-in-law's system (who doesn't live with me, but is, in fact FAMILY). Doesn't seem like this is piracy, I legally purchased the right to install this on up to five computers, but I'm violating a retarded clause in apple's user agreement

That I can't, by Apple's terms, do #2 above is just plain dumb, IMHO.
 
serious question:

if i buy panther and install it on my primary machine, can i legally use the jaguar that used to be on the primary machine on a secondary machine?

IMHO, yes. I don't think there is anything against that. Again, that's because Panther is not an upgrade in the Microsoft sense. I could be wrong though.
 
What I don't understand is why people complain and worry about Apple's marketshare being low and not having the same financial muscle as MS does...but yet they are all like "I'm going to go on BitTorrent and pirate Mac OS X!" How is that helping out Apple if you like them so much and want them to succeed?

Hey everyone, do Apple Retail Stores give educational discounts on site?

Also, if I order Panther (yes!) online, will it arrive on the 24th? Or 4-5 days after?

Microsoft also uses a coutdown clock when they counted down to the launch of Windows XP. It's $229 in Australia (about the same price for a XP Home upgrade here ).

I guess it seemed relevant given people were talking about licensing issues.

Anyway, are there any developers out there that have received notice yet when Panther will be mailed? I got excited when I saw a large envelope in the mail today from Apple, but it turned out to be the regular monthly mailing... <sigh>
 
OK, here's some "on topic". I'm a Select ADC member, and I've been expecting Panther GM to appear on the ADC download site since the announcement, but it's been a no-show. Is there anyone out there "in the know" that can tell me what the plan is for ADC member access to Panther GM? Are they only going to mail it to members? If so, when? Or, will they post it for download, like all the other seeds? If so, when?

Thanks in advance for any info yoou might have.

Apple uses Fed Ex for there deliveries, so they try to deliver on the late afternoon to early evening of the 24th at the latest on the 25th. At least that is what they did with Mac OS X 10.1.

Our local Apple Store said they will need a copy of my wife's student ID. Then she will get the educational discount.

Too bad my school stops taking deliveries around 4 pm Friday afternoon and doesn't accept them again until Monday morning...that is going to be a long weekend!
 
More on topic...has anyone heard much on whether or not Apple had stuck to BASH instead of the tcsh that they've used as default for all this time in terminal? Also, is the case sensitive HFS+ partition still there? I haven't heard anything on these two things in a long time. Figured I'd might as well try to get this thread back onto the topic of Panther 😉

I don't recall the GMs for 10.0, 10.1, or 10.2 being posted for Select members. They were automatically sent in the post, though.

mp3 (or otherwise) files on p2p is a copy from original CDs. let's say A rips a cd borrowed from B (which B owns) and C downloads it from A's computer. C also owns the CD.

since mp3 file is a copy of the original CD, A can use it for his own use, even if he doesn't own the CD. however, sharing it on p2p is not A's personal use. so A would be in violation of copyright if he puts the file on p2p. C is also violating the copyright by downloading A's file because it's a file intended for A's own personal use. this is regardless of C's ownership of the CD.

arn - i am fairly certain i got this right. however, i'm now a lawyer so i can't be 100% certain. regardless, i'll stop discussing this further because it's off topic. I just get peeved when some people try to come up with justifications for running two instances of a single purchased software. that's all.

Not a lawyer (am a law student) but I'm almost positive you are wrong. One has to have legal ownership of an item before they are allowed fair use backups. To allow otherwise would make a mockery of copyright laws.

Also, on the question of the legality of "yes" click agreements...it depends. The issues seem to resolve around the wording. If it is merely a box that states "proceed", then you have a very good argument you didn't know you were agreeing to anything, but when it is something like "I agree" or "yes" when the dialog box asks if you agree to the terms, then they are most likely to be upheld.
