I have seen many posts from our UK forum friend's dismay that John Browett was appointed Apple Retail Chief. It sounds like that they were on to something early in his position at Apple.

THank you for acknowledging what all from the UK said.

HA HA, what a good day, finally something to be happy about. As an added bonus all the **** UI should now start to disappear!

Finally some Apple news worth looking at!

An apple exec who is exiled for being opinionated, hot-tempered and not getting along with the other execs... where have I heard this story before?

Forstall has been around since the days at NeXT and is credited with leading iOS development since it's inception, definitely strange to see him walk out.

Given the trend, I don't think Ive's ideas will shine through until iOS8 because when iOS7 comes out so will the iPhone 5S. However when the iPhone 6 comes out, it will most likely have a design change...and iOS8 will go great with that. Guess we'll have to wait and see!

On a more technical note, which I really don't know anything about technology on the back end. How do you think Ive will cope with industrial design AND software design? Don't you think he has the possibility of being weak at software design since his strongpoint is industrial design?

I was wondering why Forstall didn't talk at all a the mini event... I mean, I know it's not a new iOS version, but he did show it off on the iPhone 5, so why not the mini... Just something I noticed and questioned at that point. Now I know.

He didn't talk because there was no new OS to show. He was at the iPhone event because he demoed iOS 6 on the new iPhone with the new software features (Panorama.)

Skeumorphism is a minor issue (I do not really care how stuff looks in most cases). Things like "missing" file system is a totally different matter and a matter where industrial designer would have no clue.

...which is why Craig Federighi is leading iOS/OS X development, and Ive is leading human interfaces.

That said, no way Federighi is bringing a file system to iOS, its days are numbered on OS X.

excellent new indeed.
the user interface the Forstall have been pushing has been kitch and a disaster, good to see a european doing the design again. leave the design to the europeans ;-) and the marketing to the americans,

Wow, and I just made a long post last week about how Scott is behind everything I don't currently like at Apple.

Glad to see Tim is reading my posts and taking my advice! :D

You don't like iPhones then? Scott Forstall was responsible for the iOS to begin with while Tony Fadell fought for Linux as an OS for Apple's iPhone. He is a NeXT alumni and I believe mentored by Avi Tevanian the architect of OS X.

Scott Forstall takes away a huge amount of knowledge and experience that is going to be difficult to replace.

So don't just write off people based on your whim and fancy.

Will thet bring back Avie Tevanian, Bertand Serlet and Jean Marie Hullot :D

Weirdly enough, Serlet was in the audience at the iPad mini event. Maybe they'll bring him back.

For the record, Serlet was the executive who approved and fought for Snow Leopard when Jobs (and likely others) thought an OS without new features was crazy.

At the time, I didn't support Serlet because Mac OS X releases had clearly took a backseat to iOS releases. However, with Apple committing to releasing a new OS X every year, the major/minor version makes sense.

Well, he was rumored to be difficult to work with/tyrannical. Perhaps his time in the wilderness will lead to a return and becoming, maybe an interim CEO?

Maybe we haven't heard the last from Scott Forstall at Apple...

This crossed my mind too.

Haha, told you Browett was a doofus who had to go. Glad they made this decision, Apple cannot compromise the retail experience for customers to save a couple bucks. That's what makes Apple retail different and successful in the first place.

Little surprised about Forstall, but the maps thing was kind of a disaster and it seems he had quite a bit of friction with other execs. There's probably more to this story we don't know yet though.

And way to bury the news under the arrival of the storm of the century, Apple, well played. :)

As much as I hate the skeumorphism in iOS and OS X, I hate the "designed by robots" feeling of Android even more.

I can't say I was a huge fan of the "etched leather" look in iCal when it came out. Certainly, skeumorphism taken too far would be a bad thing.

But you know what? It certainly makes iCal visually distinctive. The interface works well because you can immediately recognize it as being a calendar, even in a miniaturized view.

And on the iOS side, apps with skeumorphic elements, like Notepad and Calculator, not only look pretty fantastic but add warmth and character to the iOS experience. A counterpoint (and complement) to the minimalist hardware design.

I'm a little worried that if you apply the "Jony Ive" school of design to software you're going to end up with pretty minimalist, bleak stuff. Sort of like Android for grannies.

So forstall wont be the next steve jobs for apple?

unless he starts up the next company and gets hired back by apple if or when iOS or OS X starts to struggle.

i'm a little worried about his departure, sure we wont have skeuomorphism, but whos to say how vital his role was in creating all the positive things about iOS being a good software, as well as Mac OS?

i can't remember ifi read this correctly, but didn't he design the original Aqua look for Mac OS? and did he not design iOS himself?

i am however glad to see that one person will lead the merging and integrating of Mac OS and iOS into a unified OS.

i hope the resulting name of the product will be iOS with roman numerals like iOS X, iOS XI etc.. or something.

i do prefer how iTunes looks as an application, and hope that ive or someone who designed the new itunes will take a similar approach on the ugly attempts at skeuomorphism on apps like game center etc.

it looks like since steve jobs left, Tim is prone to cave in / bow into pleasing other higher ups more easily. it looks like the higher ups are really fighting to get what they want rather than have faith in one person to lead them like steve.

could be the begining of a downward slope for apple, we just dont know.

All hail HairforceOne.

Forstall I wouldn't lose sleep over... No bit of modesty on that guy.

Isn't Human Interface more in line with what Ive currently does? How does a laptop\tablet\phone\iMac feel, look, and interact?

I don't think it is as software/UI centric as others seem to believe it will be.

He was complaining about the aspect ratio, not screen density.

Though with Ive now in an even more prominent role, I don't know why one would expect radically different iPhone hardware with this news.

Isn't the aspect ratio still 16:9?

I don't have a huge problem with Scott Forstall, although I am not a fan of his skeuomorphic design push. It works fine obviously for Garageband, but iCal and Contacts etc.? No way. Hate it with a passion.

Just because you can implement a more skeuormorphic design approach doesn't mean that you should. I hope this design strategy leaves Apple with him.

You know what this means, right? Less fake leather, more faux-aluminum. I, for one, can't wait to see the new calender app sporting embossed numbers.
Yea, if you look at their apps tha you'll see there's no logic at all (on whether you've got a "texture interface" (like the leather) or the default, techie-interfaces).

Game Center, I believe, has a terrible design. iBooks has a great design.

Also, for the record, it's not like I hate Forstall or anything. I really hope Forstall and Apple are splitting up in a 'good way' and that it is not a forced way out like is suggested.

Not necessarily

"Craig Federighi will lead both iOS and OS X"
this is the worst thing

Not if he makes the right decisions. Hopefully he will design each to be the best for their intended purpose and merge them where it makes sense.

He will be in control of both and therefore can make that happen easier than trying to coordinate with someone else with other ideas.

Yikes, so many positive posts. This dude must have been volatile. Well, things move on. I'm sure he contributed many great positive things asApple has prospered. But he will leave in good shape for sure.
