Apple's always used it a little bit to create friendlier interfaces (like Garageband). However, lately they've gone overboard. There comes a point when you're interfering with functionality just to implement it.

I think one of the last straws was the Lion/Mountain Lion's ugly calendar.app and terrible contacts.app.
Oh, I see.

Well, I'm still on Snow Leopard so I missed all that.

I have heard nothing but complaints about Lion so I'm won't upgrade untill I have to.

On a more technical note, which I really don't know anything about technology on the back end. How do you think Ive will cope with industrial design AND software design? Don't you think he has the possibility of being weak at software design since his strongpoint is industrial design?

Generally speaking you shouldn't let hardware guys near the software. Ive is a brilliant industrial designer and I'm not sure he should be losing focus on that by worrying about software too. Will be interesting to see how this works out.

Hmm I think the designs are pretty cool actually.. I don't know why it's such a problem for most of you. It makes them stick out from the rest and it gives the apps a little bit of personality and polish. You don't see anything like it on other software, like on android no personality just boring basic layouts.

Isn't Human Interface more in line with what Ive currently does? How does a laptop\tablet\phone\iMac feel, look, and interact?

I don't think it is as software/UI centric as others seem to believe it will be.

It's not, his role is simply expanding. Now he has a say in the look and feel of the software as well as the hardware.

Isn't the aspect ratio still 16:9?

It was 3:2 and now it's (almost) 16:9. The poster was complaining about the fact that the phone got taller to fit this ratio, and not taller/wider.

...which is why Craig Federighi is leading iOS/OS X development, and Ive is leading human interfaces.

That said, no way Federighi is bringing a file system to iOS, its days are numbered on OS X.

I see this sentiment often, but no alternatives are ever mentioned as a replacement. iCloud's model is atrocious and decidedly not user-friendly. Why the urgency to get rid of the file system? Why not simply make it easier to access and organize files?

The file system concept has been around for decades, and I've yet to hear or see any alternatives that let you work with the same efficiency. Just because someones's investment-banker father-in-law has no idea what a file system is, does not mean that the proper path to ease-of-use is to just abolish it.

I would love to learn about alternatives that actually make life easier.

WOW. I know many of us have expressed our frustration with Browett and Forstall, and have wished for them to depart Apple. However, I NEVER saw this coming.

what is a human interface team? what does it do?

Back in the early 1980's, Apple developed the "Human Interface Guidelines", and this has obviously evolved over the years. They've broken some of their own rules in the name of experimentation and fun. What you will notice about "really great Mac apps", is that they generally adhere strictly to some guidelines, use system-provided interface widgets, and keep the interface really darn simple.

They got rid of Browett as quick as they stopped selling that iPad3.

Pleased about the former. Unless they hire someone worse. Is that possible?

I like Forstall. It's sad to see him go. iOS was his baby.

Browett was turd

I'm really surprised by Forstall leaving, but he did strike me has letting his passion blind his way and not be a team player as much as he could be, but that's just my impression from a few keynotes that I've seen him in. Apple needs people with his kind of drive and passion, that's for sure. But obviously some chemistry wasn't working out for him. I'm sad to see him go completely.

I imagine this was the culprit behind Forstalls removal...

I hadn't used the podcasts app, but the music player app was horrible in iOS 5 and little if any improvement in 6.

And I wonder if the upcoming iTunes interface redesign was more the Forstall influence or the Ive...and if it was the former, if we haven't seen it yet because they're having a change of heart and redesigning more along the lines of Ive's vision.

It's so strange to me that this change at Apple has me excited like a sports team will when they finally cut someone/make a trade. I don't think any other company could make me think that way.

Well, I guess it's not too different from a sports team move, since both make tens of millions of dollars.

I guess you're not a fan of analogue?

I think there was a certain nostalgia and warmth Jobs and Forstall appreciated with the skeumorphism. I didn't think it was always implemented the best, but there were certain advantages to it - mainly identity, and a certain organic element you're not going to get with digital display.

All I'm saying is careful what you wish for with industrial minimalism for digital interface. I mean can just see it now: "All these grey boxes are boring!"

Aside from that, Forstall should have been canned for making Apple a laughing stock over Maps alone.

I was born in 1986 and so did use tape decks for a while there... but from what I can remember Podcasts were NEVER played via a cassette/analogue reels. I could not for the life of me understand that analogy for the Podcast App.
Leather calendars etc. I get... but not the Podcast app.

I agree with the minimalist-wishing. I'm a fan of the Metro creative, until you use App after App and all you see is squares and text! Oh so much text.
It's truly pretty gross, busy and boring.

Here's hoping Ive finds the sweet spot.

Apple appears to be a company that can recognize when it is time for someone to go and execute immediately rather than doing what most companies do, which is ignore it, let the problem fester, force good employees to jump ship, and then make a change when it is too late.
