Ah, finally, the two biggest problems of apple are now gone.
Speaking of which...Jony Ive must be happy now!

i do agree with one of thep revious posters about the skeuomorphism design: one thing i appreciated about it, is that each app was much easier to pick out from the other, both on the desktop and in mission control. if all the apps look the very same, i will miss this feature's impact in the positive way that it did.

I agree about having different apps having different looks. It does mix things up a bit. Hopefully Ive can do something along the lines of giving the Notes app the flavor of a notepad without making it look exactly like a crummy notepad.

Too bad about Forestall. He's obviously very talented to have been where he was. Maybe he just needs a dose of humility and some time away like Steve did. Hard to say how things will turn out for him, but he's not going to starve.

Glad they figured out that Browett was not a good fit before he broke anything beyond repair.

Ive's design experience is with hardware, not software. So it will be interesting to see the outcome of this. I do hate the leather trimmed designed Scott approved.

This is huge news. Don't know how to feel about this, I like how iOS and OSX look and I guess Fostall was responsible for them?

Ive is a fantastic with hardware design, but software is a different ball game.

Weren't there rumours a while ago that there was a power struggle inside Apple after Steve passed away? Maybe Forstall leaving is a consequence of that?

Very interesting! Leo Laporte made a comment on his MacBreak Weekly show last week that he wondered if Forstall was being punished over the Maps, because he was in the audience and not on the stage.

Laporte is da man!

Yeah, I noticed that too, but speaking of Leo, am I the only one noticing how arrogant he has been getting over the last couple of years? I wish he'd quit interrupting his co-hosts and guests. He continually does it and it makes me crazy. In most cases, I'm more interested in what they have to say and then Leo walks all over them.

Ive at the keynotes

Someone has probably already said this, and I apologies if it's you. I'm sure once I have read through everything I will come across your post.
Do you thing we will now have Jony Ive talk during the key notes. Would bring back some of the magic lost when Jobs left us.

As you can see from my posts over the last few years, I don't like the software direction Apple has taken (or not taken) during that time, and I can honestly say this is the most exciting news I've read about Apple since the introduction of the first iPhone.

I thought it would take a larger crisis for Apple to change, but I'm glad to see it happen sooner rather than later, assuming my optimism is well-placed and that this will be a time of change for good in terms of software design and quality.

So instead of bug eye Forstall prancing around for 15min at the announcements , we get to watch Ive walk around on stage with that inquisitive look on his face like he's unsure why his crap was the color it was that morning.

I wonder what led to this.
I ask myself the same question.

Losing Scott Forstall is huge. A far bigger loss than many on the "outside" may realize. Prior to this development, he was widely regarded by Apple insiders as one of the most committed to a long term career at Apple.

Forstall was also one of very few that had the ability to work with Steve, even when Jobs was acting out, many marveled at Forstall's ability to take the heat in a rather unfazed manor.

Highly intelligent, forward thinking & able to stand his ground unflinchingly. He will be missed. It's a loss of great magnitude.

I'm am shocked to see him go.

Something is seriously amiss at Apple.

No, the fact that he's not a software engineer is critical. As a general rule software engineers are the worst people to be doing UI/UX design.

This.

People forget that SJ never wrote a line of code in his entire life. He was just a dude who understood the processes and applied his sense of style and eye for detail to everything his code geniuses would develop.

From that line of thought, Ive's promotion is perhaps not that crazy. If he lets the devs do their thing and just tells them how it should look and feel, hey, why not?

I wonder if any regional VPs in charge of retail will also be fired. Whoever runs the show at the Apple Stores in Japan should be high on that list. The stores here are a complete disaster. Absolutely no crowd control. Floor employees who forget which customers they've just spoken to. Genius Bar appointments that start 20 minutes after the appointed times. And so on...

I get better service at 7-Eleven in Japan than I do at the Apple Stores here.

I doubt they will want to scrap months of work. Now I am worried that iOS 7 will just be half Forstall and half Ive. But I am hoping to see some major changes. Windows Phone is looking better and better every day.

Apple have had an iOS "bake off" before I believe for the original iPhone. I assume there is nothing to have prevented a similar thing taking place over the last 12 months with Jonny winning...

I read somewhere that Ive is actually a really shy person. The only time I have seen him outside the promo videos was during the "spotlight on notebooks" back in 08 and that in a smaller setting than say WWDC.

I really liked Forstall. He's one of the main minds behind iOS and OSX, you know, the OS's we live and breathe by on a daily basis. He's always been passionate about his work and is #2 in presentation behind Steve. I'm not saying everything he did was perfect, nor should anyone expect that, but the negativity revolving him on this site is a bit revolting.

Considering that most of the people on this site are avid "Apple" fans, I would like to think that people would give the guy some credit....

With Jony Ive taking over Human Interface teams, there could be more consistency coming to Apple's user interfaces across the company.

Yay! I was growing concerned with the design inconsistencies. I can't wait to have thinner and lighter apps.
