Browett was a no brainer. You don't screw with the Apple Store formula. Clearly, it works.

I say promote Ron Johnson's #2 that temporarily ran Apple Retail until Browett came in.

Browett out: good news; I never had the impression that he was the right choice. Glad that TC corrected his (mis)judgment on this original decision to hire him.

Scott out ? Not sure if good; a little bit competition in the senior management is good;

And for all those hoping getting a more customizable UI: no way. Sir Ive is an artist and will not allow us to screw his designs.

But let's give Apple a shot, it will for sure cause change; next year WWDC we will see some first results.

1) The sizable number of people I have met who are sticking with Snow Leopard for a variety of reasons? There had never been a new version of OS X that power users have shied away from in large numbers. Now we're 2 deep. Lion and Mountain Lion are certainly cool...but this is a serious trend problem. The power users are bellwethers, when looking at the future of Apple, this fact greatly disturbs me.

Forstall hasn't had a role in OS X development since he was put in charge of iOS. Blame Craig Federighi for that, the guy now in charge of iOS.

That they got rid of him now is a good sign that things are not. A good company knows when someone (even if it is a senior member) needs to go. A company getting rid of executives is not necessarily a bad thing. In this case, it is probably a good thing in the long run.

While you've brought up a valid scenario, I believe it's not applicable in this case. Nor am I speculating. Being very close to many within Apple for decades, while honoring their NDA's their is a certain buzz leaking out, surrounding these latest moves.

I'd prefer to think these were planned well executed moves by Tim Cook, who I trust & respect.

Yet the general leaks of why, are not encouraging. While no one is irreplaceable, Forstall was a great asset
to Apple, even though on more than one occasion he was made a scapegoat.

Time will tell.

I read somewhere that Ive is actually a really shy person. The only time I have seen him outside the promo videos was during the "spotlight on notebooks" back in 08 and that in a smaller setting than say WWDC.

He appeared (As well as rare behind the scenes looks at his design studio) in the documentary "Objectified" (a riveter from the creator of Helvetica) which was at one time available on Netflix.

Give me a break. Nobody cares about the **** that you do not like Scott. Name something best you achieved in your career like what Scott has done in Apple....

Give me a break. I've got a list as long as my arm about why I don't like Forstall. The fact that he did great things in the past means I should ignore these problems? How does that make any sense?

Delighted with the two departures. Browett should never have been hired in the first place and Ive was never going to loose out to Forstall in a him or me competition.

Have to say I'm not digging the Forstall hate/bashing. Yeah, skeumorphism is a little cheesy but the guy was central to one of the most amazing things at Apple. His work on OS X alone would be amazing enough but it's pretty clear that iOS is the future of Apple and he's done great work on that as well.

Yeah, he's not on Team Apple anymore but I don't think that's any reason to start trashing the guy.

Start by telling the truth to yourself. Apple Maps is one of the worst mapping software out there.

The application is fine. It is actually very good. Like the way it lets you scale and rotate the maps absolutely smoothly. When you zoom in to a higher resolution map, this is done very well. It uses a lot less data for the same display than other apps do, which is especially useful when you're not on WiFi.

Now the data that it uses leaves a lot to be desired.

Good thing I don't have my AAPL stock right now. This is going to hurt them in the short term. I'm sitting here, waiting for a good moment to buy some undervalued AAPL.

By the way, has anyone seen Amazon's P/E ratio? It's over 3000!!!

OOOOrrrrrrrr

Tim Cook wants to exit as CEO and is taking Scott Forstall directly as his protege for a year before turning the reigns over to him...

Good design is good design, whether it's a building, a computer, or an icon on a screen.

lol

UI/UX is a totally different field than Industrial Design (hardware) is a totally different field than Graphic Design

You think Ive would be an awesome Landscape Architect just because of his Industrial Design experience/talent?

A good company knows when someone (even if it is a senior member) needs to go.

Someone needs to tell Microsoft this. ;)

Hm
Mixed bag as I see it.
Most of the leadership team at Apple are already well accomplished - Mansfeld is about to retire!
They've all done great things. Jony Ive sure has done a lot of great work, and continues to, but is he still at his peak that he can still take on the challenge both the hardware and software design? Is he down to take on the tonnes of extra work that come with that, when he's already powerful, rich, famous and knighted??? lol

Overall, to me, they're adding a lot to the plates of the old folks. The work load hasn't reduced, but the people has. Can these guys handle it?

On the other hand, kind of glad that Tim Cook is on the go-get-'er. New macbooks, new imacs, new ipads, new iphone, new ipods, new team.

Also sad to see Forstall go. Kind of sobering, one screw up and you're out. Doesn't matter how long you've been there, how much good you've done and how ingrained you've been into the culture...After the success of iOS 4 and iOS 5, he probably went on relax mode. Poof.

Who knew

that Apple fans had so much resentment towards Apple management. Is it because you hate latest Apple products? And if not then Why?

Unfortunately that is inside the culture of US. All people care about is success, not how you succeed. People will trash you to hell when you fail.

Have to say I'm not digging the Forstall hate/bashing. Yeah, skeumorphism is a little cheesy but the guy was central to one of the most amazing things at Apple. It's pretty clear that iOS is the future of Apple and he's done a pretty great job of overseeing it.

Yeah, he's not on Team Apple anymore but I don't think that's any reason to start trashing the guy.

we dont really know how far back this stretches.

but something tells me it stretches far back, and if bob mansfield is staying at apple, then i think maybe hes part of the reason too.

since jobs died:

there has been a split camp over the skeuomorphism.

bob mansfield then intends to leave the company.

iOS 6 release, not a successful release in comparison to past releases.

bob mansfield and ive obviously have a closer relationship, engineering and design of the physical product naturally means they have to work together.

i think forstall was at the center of controversy and problems, likely alienating the other higher ups and risking a split camp. potentially being a reason to push mansfield to wanna leave.

in the end, if this was part of it, then its obvious:

Tim could never afford to lose hes leading engineering expert, and his Lead designer of the products.

by the sounds of it, many apple workers werent confident or happy with don riccio taking over mansfields position, this could all be part of it.

huh. Interesting development. I wonder why the reason for this shakeup. Can't be related to maps as Engadget has pointed out.

Maybe Mansfield left because of Eddy and they needed time to find a way to restructure the company without him. If all the old timers have a unified vision they now have no opposition to move forward.

No, the fact that he's not a software engineer is critical. As a general rule software engineers are the worst people to be doing UI/UX design.

I know people who call themselves "designers" who are worse.

Maybe it's different elsewhere, but the developers I work with are all highly intelligent, and that get's you a long long way to doing anything well. However, good user interface design is a fulltime job. If you expect a software engineer to write good software and then to create a good user interface in his or her spare time, that's not going to work.
